yes it's nice, if i remember right, the only thing that does not work is the diashow. i'm using it as an sfs.

BUT MAKE SURE to have a large pup_save (i think it needs bigger than 512 MB).

cheers

picasa

#3 Post by Barburo »

I un-installed Picasa 2.2 that I had been using and tried installing the new 2.7 .pet (I'm using Lighthouse Pup based on 3.01 on my notebook). The installer reported that I had missing libs:
libgphoto2.so.0
libgphoto_port.so.0
Went to Ttuuxxx's excellent library resource on Puppylinux.ca and found that both these libs had a zero entry.
Downloaded the nearest equivalents (looked like later versions) renamed to the missing lib names, rebooted and found two entries in the graphics menu:
Picasa
Picasa Image something
Tried the first which displayed a message complained I had two files (?not sure exactly what it said) but I had the option to continue which I clicked.
Picasa did come up but I used .. help .. about and it reported Picasa 2.2 and it looked exactly the same as before.
I've uninstalled, rebooted, and re-installed the .pet for 2.7 a couple of times. I no longer get missing lib messages, but after the .pet has completed, all I ever see is Picasa 2.2.
Any hints? I can live with 2.2 but I wouldn't mind trying 2.7
Thanks, B.

I'm using Lighthouse Pup 3.01a4 by Tazoc
It's essentially Puppy 3.01 with some additions and modifications.
So far I have not encountered any difficulties installing .pups or .pets through the Petget package manager.

hi barburo,

maybe the uninstall went wrong and you have now both packages with one bin in /usr/bin (2.2) and one in /usr/local/bin (2.7). if this is the case i think puppy will pick the one from /usr/bin.

so you might look into these folders or try

which picasa

from console.

maybe this helps.

you really you should have both packages completely removed and just install 1.
just right click on a package and select copy
then change the .pet to tgz and hit enter
now click on the package and uncompress it into a folder
search for each file and manually delete it
hope this helps
ttuuxxx
once 2.7 is installed open console and type picsa

tip from my slackware experience

ldd is your friend

Code: Select all

ldd /pathtopicassa/executable
it will list libraries and notify of any missing ones........ i don't think using slackware is possible without eventually having to use ldd LOL

on second thought im not 100% sure ldd will work since they are using some wine stuff to get picasa going on linux at least that is what i heard

I think I have discovered the cause of the problems but I do not know how to fix it.
I carefully removed all traces of picasa from my system, rebooted, checked using P-find for all occurences of picasa and I find I have a directory:
/opt/picasa
that is empty, but that I cannot remove, nor can I transfer any files to it.
By looking inside the .pet for picasa 2.7 I see that /opt/picasa is the directory that picasa 2.7 wants to install to.

I've tried all sorts of things:
- transferring the contents of /opt to a new directory and deleting /opt - returns an error - cannot delete /opt/picasa
- testing whether I could write to /opt/picasa/ but not allowed - input/output error.
- changing permissions to give owner read/write - makes no difference - I still cannot delete or write to it.
Is there a brute-force sort of way of eliminating this directory?
I also tried rm and rmdir to no avail.
Obviously if I can't write to it neither can the .pet install to it.

hmm... you could try to manually extract the .pet and copy out the files to where you want

rename *.pet to .tar.bz2 and extract to /picasa with pupzip

not sure .tar.bz2 is correct could be .tar.zip or .tar.gz or just .tar

Thanks for your suggestions.
I did some digging around. As I continually get input/output error, most suggestions are disk error - I really hope not.
I'll run disk diagnostics and see.
***Edit Decided to reformat the partition to ext3 from ext2.
Weird part is that when I booted a ram-only puppy, then mounted my pup-save file I was able to delete the /opt/picasa directory.
I once again tried installing the picasa 2.7 .pet - didn't work, so I removed it using the package manager, which left (once again) several un-deletable directories under /opt/picasa.
Made sure all my files were copied to another partition, reformatted to ext3 using gparted, copied back the files I need for my frugal install and now I'm back in business again.
However, I think I'll abandon picasa 2.7 for now.

Install Picasa without success

#15 Post by hendrikus »

In my enthusiasm about MacPUP Dingo I try to install a similar system as my OpenSuSE 11 configuration, Installing Picasa was just on click, I hoped it would be the same here.

The installation of Picasa 2.7.3736-15 24MB was easy, even got a message that is was successfully installed, but I can't get it running, after I read this forum I know it's not that easy. I use Picasa quite a lot, has someone succeed install this application?

Thans for your advice, but I nothing is happening when I start it in the terminal, and I think why. It seems there went something wrong during the installation. When I compare the files in the /opt/picasa/wine/ folders.

OpenSuSE /opt/picasa/wine
bin
drive_c in this folder I see the picasa2.exe file
lib
share
generic.ppd

Puppy /opt/picasa/wine
drive_c no exe files
generic.ppd

I think there is something missing.

hi hendrikus,

at

http://www.mediafire.com/aragon-puppy

you'll find a zip-file for picasa-2.7. Zip-File contains the sfs and the checksum.

sfs-usage (from: http://www.puppylinux.com/development/p ... gement.htm):
Download any SFS file to /mnt/home (the same place as your "pup_save" personal storage file), run the BootManager (in the System menu) to select or deselect what SFS files you want to use, reboot Puppy and its ready to go.
There is also a sfs of the actual picasa-3.0 beta.

hope this helps.

cheers

Hi Aragon,

Thanks a lot, you did a great job, I installed it and it's working, even better than on OpenSuSE, off course because it's running full in memory.

Puppy is actually the most perfect operating system for people who just want to do their job fast and without struggling with OS like WindowsXP or Vista (virus, performance, licencing). Pity that puppy isn't much focused on end-users. Puppy is fast, reliable and easy to install, the first linux I got my camera and handphone connected without any problems, even internet via 3.5G and CDMA worked without serious problems.

Why Puppy isn't just developing the base OS puppy 4.10 core, and let others create only the sfs environmental packages. Like: MacPUP_DINGO.sfs, wNOP.sfs, GnomeDesktop.sfs and others. So you can switch the whole environment with one simple sfs file. After that you are able to add (PETget) programs.

It's now confusing, first which puppy version, directly installed with many programs I never use, is there a possibility to remove them?

In my opinion Puppy is a perfect partner in the Google trend, see how easy people accept the chrome browser, minimalism without any difficult menu's, just does what it has to do. When use and option for 3D desktop it's already more sophisticated than Windows.

I would go for a GooglePack.sfs:

Firefox + Google toolbar + addon's
OpenOffice or StarOffice
Picasa
Google Desktop
Google Earth
Google Chrome
Adobe Reader
Skype
RealPlayer

Regards
Hendrikus
