Searching for a particular puppy... [update]

#1 Post by Loddy »

Hi, I'm new to Linux and new to the forum, I really want to use linux and move away from Windows for work because I only need a few packages to get my design work done.

What I am looking for is a version of Puppy Linux with Openoffice and Scribus and GIMP on it.

So far, and I've been searching off and on for the last 3 days and so far I haven't found the right derivative.

I've tried Puppy Linux the official latest version, TeenPup, LighthousePup and so far they all lack what I need.

---

Failing that, could somebody link me a download of Scribus that WILL work on Puppy Linux? And some clear install instructions?

If I can get this, my work issues would be pretty much sorted.

Loddy, welcome.
Have you considered Grafpup? http://www.grafpup.org/. Nathan also had an Open Office .sfs.

does it matter which versions of OpenOffice? The reason why earlier versions were around 70MB pets and the latest is around 230MB pet
SO it does make a difference on Pc specs, and as gimp goes, you can get maybe 4 release back around 1/4 of the latest in size.

also my FireHydrant "Inferno" 3.0 series had all 3 applications

Thanks for your replies, I'm looking into all the links you gave me now...

I would prefer the latest version available of Scribus, but as long as I can produce brochures with varying bleeds and either embed or outline fonts in the PDF output, I'm ok with an older version. I've only used the latest version on WindozeVista but I'm sure my needs can be met in the previous version.

Openoffice again doesn't have to be the very latest version no, as long as it can save to DOC format and convert to PDF which I'm sure it can.

GIMP would be a comfortable bonus but as long as I can resample/resize pictures and save in JPG/PNG format and in a multilayered format then I'm happy.

Once I have these minimum applications available from the word 'go' I can relax a bit and spend time learning to install things the long way round and actually get used to using the linux console.

I'm actually really wanting to learn to use the console because I do miss the good old days of DOS sometimes, windoze has made me lazy.

Thanks for your help so far.

Okay fellas,

I've downloaded, ISO'd and fired up FireHydrant-Inferno and so far, considering it has OpenOffice, Scribus and a bunch of other useful stuff for my webdesign (bluefish etc...) it's looking like the winner.

I have one last question on this topic...
...I really would like to install FireHydrant to my harddrive, so can someone tell how to do that?

Thanks ttuuxxx, I'm going to try that in the morning, but I have to tell you something funny about the setup I have so far.

I've been running Hydrant off the live CD and it's working as fast as I need it which is great, the sluggishness of the net connection I imagine is due only to the distance I am from the access point and that is something I can't improve any time soon. But I noticed that by asking Hydrant to save the session to a file, and furthermore to the harddrive, upon rebooting it naturally loaded my changes and I also noticed that there was an icon on the desktop saying 'computer', which, if it was there before I hadn't noticed til now, but the point is, as I have the original puppy linux installed on the harddrive I can access all the folders thru this 'computer icon' so in theory I don't need to install hydrant there!

--
Having said that, I AM going to try and proper install for the simple reason of quicker booting up time.

Thanks again for your help.

No problem, Also Firefox should auto update to the latest 2 series, which is still currently being developed and works better on puppy than Series 3.0 does :)
Also how do you like the look and feel of "Inferno" that particular release to a long time to build, hence the reason why I haven't updated it, :) Its still less than 1 yr old so its not really all that old, and plus it uses Slackware which is a bonus, In the menu/setup/ you can Gslapt, if you click that and update it, It will give you a list of Slackware Packages to install. :) If any of the Slackware sources aren't working just disable the ones that aren't working and continue the update
hope that helps

I've installed Hydrant now, but what I did notice on the first post-installation boot was that the trash was not deleting files when I told it too.
The Trash icon stays in the 'paper in the bin' state and the files do not vanish from their folders...
That been an issue before? I haven't been back on the machine to check yet as I got kicked out the room for people to have a meeting but hopefully it'll fix itself.

People don't usually use the trash but when you drag something into it, you need to right click on the trash can and select "Empty trash. If that doesn't work, I'll make a simple fix for you.

Ah right, well I will be using the trash occasionally, and the conventional drag-n-drop, 'empty trash' method is the method that wasn't working, so that fix might be necessary, if it's not too much trouble. Other than that, I love it, the streamtuner and audacious programs are just what I need for music and VLC loads faster on linux than it does in Vista!

It's great that Filezilla is on there too, as I use that for ftp'ing my site online.
