How to Connect Nokia Phones to Puppy

Wow nooby, 3SEK/day, that is for nothing.(aprox 50 American cents).
So 16 days on the internet is equivalent to a beer?

I guess them try to kill the competition them take 9SEK a day.
But some even say surf for free for 6 month if you but a special smart phone.

So them use such tricks to out compete each other. So it is a temporary thing. It can change any day. No promises.

It used to be 20SEK per Megabyte for the biggest operator then their worst competer changed that to 15 SEK per MB. Then the first countered with Max 9 SEK despite one surfed for more. Surf as much as you want still only 9SEK. So the second one had to go lower than that one so them say surf as much as you want for our 15SEK per MB it still cost you only 3SEK.

So them are at it. Trying to kill the other finance wise. But in the long run it is cheaper to jump on the 69 per month or something I don't remember. Was it 39 per week. I am too lazy to look it up.

I only wanted to use it when the ordinary internet is down because I am internet dependent embarrassing I know! And we have had three such now that lasted for some hours each. The worst lasted from 1PM to 10 PM this Saturday.

Yes the telcos are always trying to outdo each other.
On the plus side, we the customer benefit in the short term, but in the long
term it could be rather problematic as the bigger operators simply keep on
dropping prices so they "starve" the competition until they either go out of business
or get bought up by the bigger ones and we are left with a monopoly or duopoly.

A common "trick" for many internet providers is simply to increase the contention ratio when they decrease tariffs, so the user thinks they are getting
a bargain but in fact the data throughput goes down.

I am surprised that you are experiencing such long internet outages as Sweden has a reputation for very good and reliable communications infrastructure.

Yes these three outages has been a surprise. I move here 2006 and don't remember me ever have had any outages at all. Could be them doing work on Road and Railway.

I have a Nokia N8 and I notice that when you connect it to the USB
it emulates a drive of sorts and it even includes an autorun.inf file
which points to a exe install pgm which is pre-loaded in the phones memory.
Obviously this is meant only for windows.
Puppy would obviously ignore all the autorun.inf stuff so how would one get
the phone to work under puppy?

I suspect that the situation of connecting a Nokia phone will be made even more
difficult/perplexing now that M$ has taken over providing/writing code for Nokia.

have you tried following the steps on page one of this thread that I used successfully on two different nokia phones?

I did try several times with no success.
So I gave up on the idea and bought myself a cheap GPRS modem.
Works like a dream, connects via the serial port.
Not the fastest thing to surf the web with, but perfect for email and the
occasional 'wget'.

Below is what it looks like.
It's pretty small too (length = 85mm width = 50mm height = 25mm)

And I can send and receive SMS' as well.

I can do pictures transfer okay but have not tested to get it work as modem due to wrong operator.

I have the better operator on a android smartphone that is more modern.

Dave I where wrong about the outages. It was a local thing in our Condo.
Some Earth protector for the Mains release and that makes power go out to a switch for the internet hub in the cellar and only the Board of the Condo has the keys to set it going again.

5 years and the only extended outage you've experienced was not even
due to the operator, pretty good then.

Apparently the cdc-acm driver needs to be updated to recognise the Nokia N8.
It involves a simple patch, from here -

I have just applied this patch and recompiled the driver, now attached.
There are 2 versions; one compatible with Puppy 5.1 - 5.2.8, and one compatible with Puppy 4.3.x

Puppy 5.1.x version of the cdc-acm driver shifted to here -

Plug in your N8 after you have installed this dotpet, and the new cdc-acm driver should load automatically.
Run the "dmesg" command and hopefully at the end you will see that your phone has been recognised, and new device has been created - probably /dev/ttyACM0.
Then you will need to treat this as a standard dial-up modem to connect ... but you may need to know the data connection parameters for your telecoms provider.

Unfortunately I'm using Puppy 4.3.1 but I have saved the pet if I ever "upgrade" to 5.1 - 5.2.8.

Well my Puppy 4.3 installation has a corrupted X server, but I was able to compile the driver from the commandline. Now attached to the previous post.
