4.1 Retro Hangs at Performing 'Switch Root'

Although I can install an older Puppy like ChurchPup on my old laptop, 4.1 Retro hangs showing something like "Performing 'switch root' to layered filesystem." Am I just condemned to running older Puppies on this box, or could there be something in the BIOS or other place that might be fixable?
