Rudy edition
Latest version: rudypuppy 070227
Warning: still more than 500 megs! (But less than 600 ;^)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Old message:
This is my own puplet, designed just for my needs (and for fun, actually)
This puppy is quite obese: more than 250 megs!
Started from puppy 2.03 ce by hacao;
* stripped away the seamonkey suite and added firefox with some extensions (gspace, scrapbook. google notebook and searchpluginhacks) (I don't need an email/news app because I only use gmail and google news) (plus, for some basic html editing the openoffice writer is enough!);
* stripped also some languages from the openoffice suite (leaving only English and Italian);
* stripped away all the games;
* added java;
* added gimpshop with some plugins;
* added streamtuner/streamripper and TkDVD;
* added wine and foxit pdf reader for windows which becomes the default pdf viewer application;
* added some security/rescue apps (foremost, fatback, fprot with gui, chkrootkit, and CmosPwd∞, running in dosbox 0.63;
* added some other utilities (curl, xbindkeys, debian installer, pdf toolkit, torsmo)
* linked WAG to Rutilt so that the second is invoked;
* added my own desktop backgrounds including our beloved Rudy (who is now joyfully playing in dogs' heaven ;.)
and maybe some other things I don't remember by now.

Sounds like fun.
I have been playing with Unleashed.
Spent yesterday downloading all the packages - and just managed to delete them all . . . (thought I would start again after my first attempt did not work)
thanks for putting it on the wiki news - if you have news - put it on the wiki

If you like firefox - check out the small, swift and processor optimised
Swiftfox - it was noticably faster for me . . .

What a great tribute to Rudy

I feel that swiftfox might not be a good solution for a live cd like puppy, which happens to be booted on several machines with several different processors. Given this, I swear that on my kubuntu laptop swiftfox (for the right processor) is much, much, much quicker than firefox .
BTW now rudypuppy has had some errors corrected, like cmospwd not working - there's the native executable now, not the one running in dosbox. There are still some imperfections here and there, like some files and usernames of mine (hope not passwords!) in programs histories, but that's it. It's in the process of uploading on my server.
I plan to include some other rescue applications, like one which proved very useful to me at work, i.e. to wipe the admistrator's password on a win nt/xp machine - nobody is able to remind those passwords when they're needed, right? This runs as a script on a live linux cd, and I hope I can extract that and incorporate into puppy. (Have a look at http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ - credits to Petter Nordahl-Hagen)

Rudypuppy 090610 edition
New edition: rudypuppy060910.iso (download)
Several changes:
* throwed in timidity and skype
* added tiddlywiki, an amazing self-contained, one-file-does-it-all personal wiki, which does not need an http server like didiwiki, and can be used for composing nice internet sites. Tiddlywiki has been added in form of roxapp, and its roxapp menu allows to download or generate offline a new wiki, while making a backup copy of the old one.
* tweaked the wireless network wizard, to make reference to rutilt instead of WAG, and to give a hint to look online for wifi drivers working with ndiswrapper
* to facilitate detection of usb wifi cards (and usb other things), there's now lsusb (copied from my kubuntu)
* added tablauncher, for some eyecandy.
* corrected association of pdf files, downloaded by firefox, to foxit pdf reader
* more firefox extensions: in addition to gspace, scrapbook and google notebook, now we have CHM reader, email this!, search engine ordering, viamatic foxespose, and focus options. I should uninstall searchpluginhacks but I'm too lazy to do it now...
Unfortunately, none of these are pupget or dotpup compliant (I haven't learned yet how to make those packages), so no easy uninstall.

Rudypuppy goes 2.10rc1!
060924 edition, based on Puppy Linux 2.10 rc 1. As previously, I added all sorts of things I liked, from forum and dotpups, and it was quite a fun.
Among them:
- pup_save encryption by Kirk ( http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=11151 )
- puppy software installer beta 4 by Mu ( http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10960 )
- xfilemount by sunburnt ( http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10823 )
- nano editor (I like it)
- gimp 2.2.11 instead of gimpshop (gimpshop had broken jpg open plugin under puppy 2.10)
- firefox with lots of extensions (added download statusbar to previous editions) and a number of streaming media and online productivity tools
- did not erase seamonkey, abiword, gnumeric and games, they are still there... rudypuppy is so bloated that they don't make so a big difference
- java is now the stripped 1.4.2 blackdown dotpup, no audio, to save some megabytes;
- gxine codecs, big dotpup ( from http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9000 )
- refined help for rescue apps, added script to wipe swapspace (experimental... I'm no script expert... might erase your hd
This in addition to what I added in the two previous versions. Download here - it's a 247M iso ;^)
Nathan F's Gimpshop 2.2.10 seems to work properly on my Puppy 2.10
all i had to do to "install" Gimpshop was to put a "gimpshop" symlink in my-roxapps to where it is installed
the jpeg plugin did not work in Puppy 1.0.8, but i made a symlink to a library file and it worked ok
(i symlinked libexif.so.12 to libexif.so.9.1.2, i think) ... it seems to work in Puppy 2.10 without doing that, because Puppy 2.10 comes with the newer libexif.so.12
i think the Gimpshop roxapp needs to be in /root/my-roxapps ... you can move it anywhere you like (for example, /usr/local/apps), or rename it, but there must be a symlink in /root/my-roxapps named gimpshop, to where ever it is installed

The GimpSHOP package was compiled with --prefix=/root/my-roxapps/gimpshop and then has the correct $PATH set in it's AppRun script, so yes it does have to stay where I put it or at the very least have a symlink. You guys are also correct about the jpeg plugin, I had compiled this in Grafpup which at the time had a newer Exif library. It would be fairly trivial to add the correct lib to the package, if anyone is still interested.
Personally I like the cvs packages better, as there are a significant number of new features at this point. The stability has also improved remarkably in the last onth or so, and I would imagine that the 2.4 release is coming along pretty soon. I'm not entirely happy with the direction they're taking in some regards though, the latest cvs checkouts require GTK-2.10 for the print plugin so sadly Gimp-2.4 will be crippled on most distributions when it does release. I tried upgrading to GTK-2.10 a while back and encountered too many bugs to stay with it.
I now relinquish the thread back to it's proper owners.

Rudypuppy 061020
My next attempt to live cd satori is rudypuppy061020.
Based on 2.11 (version including complete xorg) plus kirk's pup_save encryption. Has some other rescue utility, i.e. ddrescue/ddrhelp, ms-sys, scalpel, shred with wipeswap, and puts in evidence ntfsundelete which is already in Puppy. Other ones were already in previous rudypuppies, including chkrootkit, chntpw, cmospwd and fatback. Includes fine dotpups from many authors.
I also repacked a number of already existing dotpups, in order to put them in /usr/local and free /root/my-applications, and made some new dotpup; they are in http://www.debernardis.it/dotpups and here's the listing:

Take it if you like from http://www.debernardis.it/rudypuppy061020r1.iso - revision 1 has also xnview (good for browsing multipage tif files of faxes).

New version 061127
Download
It's now at the 061127 edition, built upon Puppy Linux 2.12. For me, it's the "Skies edition" for the several skies photos I have been shooting recently, and included here as background images. The default background is a clear and sunny sky and sea view I took from near my workplace, at the addiction medicine service of Augusta (Italy). Some other skies come from Catania and some other are borrowed by a set of Croatian photos from my brother-in-law.
But now, done with backgrounds, and let's try to see what's there in those almost 500 megabytes, other than the best OS at all, that is the plain 2.12 Puppy, of course!
The default parameters for boot are acpi=strict acpi=noirq pci=biosirq pci=nosort irqpoll routeirq. These are known to help acpi function on buggy machines like my hp pavilion notebook, but should not harm for general use. The symptoms of need for this cure are plain crashes or, more subtly, in my hands, unexpected stalls of wi-fi connectivity, at least with every kernel I happened to try, both in Puppy and Ubuntu.
After choosing keyboard layout, if you go for xvesa, you will be in 640x480 plain vga without autostarting the xvesa wizard. This is due to some problems that showed after my elaboration of 2.12: while the plain 2.12 correctly opens xvesa wizard, after all my fiddling this was not the case any more and the wizard stalled in console mode, needing to stop and run manually xwin. Since I didn't feel like finding the culprit, I hardcoded /etc/videomode in my iso and the console bug disappeared, at the price of not autostarting the xvesa wizard (but you can always call it from the menu).
In addition to stuff that was already there in previous versions, you have now a "Science" menu, which at present includes:
1) the statistical interpreted language "R" at the last version (2.4.0 - 2006/10/3) and its full docs in pdf, plus some other free books on R for beginners I took from its site ( http://cran.r-project.org/ );
1) a simple but complete gui statistical program for windows, Stats4U, running under Wine ( http://www.statpages.org/miller/openstat/ );
1) Easychem 0.6, a basic, tiny, nice molecular drawing program for X ( http://easychem.sourceforge.net/ ) - this exports EPS graphics, and in order to include them in other documents I added the eps2png utility which can be invoked from the console;
1) a link to MedASq, my own text-only but feature-enriched interface to the Pubmed/Medline databases of the National Library of Medicine ( http://www.debernardis.it/medasq.php ).
1) and as in the last version, Rlplot 1.2, a slick and powerful editor for scientific graphics ( http://rlplot.sourceforge.net/ ).
We still have Openoffice.org 2.04, Firefox 2.0 and a collection of rescue utilities. I have abandoned scite (geany is enough), pup_save encryption (until it gets into the official puppy, but if you need it it's here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... highlight=), nano (I was not doing so much editing in console), gentoo file manager (didn't like it). Instead, now there is CUPS, Gslapt in addition to Debian installer, editsfs and xgammon: all dotpups from those generous and prolific fellows hanging on Puppy's forums...
The iso contains also an "options" directory, sporting the devx_212.pup, the synaptic.pup (modified to default in tap_and_drag mode, which I prefer), and the dotpups for XFCE and Gnome I took from the forum; I think it's handy to have them available on your live cd when needed without loading at boot.
Tip: audio volume goes up/down with CTRL-up/down arrows; CTRL-left arrow mutes the speakers (then you have to CTRL-up to gradually restore).
For some obscure reasons I still have to investigate (eheheh), this last iso happens to be HUGE! Most of the space is taken by Openoffice and R. But it is still quick and slick on my 1gig ram machine... could not test on other computers, so please let me know.
Also, I'd like to get some feedback on the impressions of those who happen to test it and possibly decide to use it, and the bugs they are going to find.
Making puplets is half of the fun, but the other half of the fun is making them better

Re: New version 061127
Could it be because the files that are added are not compressed? If creating a distro with unleashed then the ISO would be smaller because the components are compressed?debernardis wrote:

You seem to be moving towards a "Scientific Puppy" "SciPup" - that seems a good and useful niche. I think there is also room for a "CodePup" - a programmers Puppy
In time I hope these individual Pups will become .sfs modules to reconfigure Puppy for specific needs projects . . .
I tried creating an unleashed Puppy and Linux Tmxxine v0.8 (still in pre alpha) will I hope, be based on unleashed
http://tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php?wakk ... eUnleashed
Linux Tmxxine is the only version of Puppy disapproved by my psychiatrist but approved by Barry and the infamous Chronology Protection Agency
(which does not exist)

. . . eh . . . I think I meant to say well done on Rudy
. . . better go and have a lie down . . .
