Project Ripple [in development]
I didn't realise there was a ripple ISO already O.o sorry for getting off topic here
heh... and to top that off forgot to save my session last night and now have to reinstall everything and emrald is seg faulting
oh where is the link to the ISO anyway? I'd be more than happy to test... even if chances are my HW is pretty well supported already

The links a bit hard to find right now, I'll create another thread for releases soon. You can get it here: http://www.curiouslegends.com.au/linux/ripple/iso
Let me know what you think. You'll likely hav to jugglle this around a bit, no scripts automatically configuring anything at this point, that's the next iso, will be out in a few days. Cheers.

Im gonna be really short on time for the rest of the well so that is just as well... btw why is it so huge?
puppy + xfce + drivers should at worst come out to 85 + 15 + 20 and 10 for the rest or about 130mb
heh... that was on of my peeves about Mathpup... ended up larger than i would have liked

241MB does seem a little big and it seems you did a lot of hard work with source ...Just wondered are you:
Of course none of this is absolutely necessary just good practice
- removing the DEV, NLS and DOC .pets from the final build
6a.In Step-3: choose option 3
- stripping the binaries in your packages
Code: Select all
find . | xargs file | grep ELF | cut -f 1 -d : | xargs strip --strip-unneeded
- delete unneeded files (documentation, unused sounds, images, translations from /usr/share/locale)
- uncompress all archives (such as man pages)... Squash/AUFS works better
Code: Select all
find ./usr/man/ -type l -name "*.gz" | xargs -r gunzip -f
find ./usr/man/ ! -type l -name "*.gz" | xargs -r gunzip
Thanks for that, but it's not the final size. Lol. I'm glad Ripple is developing this much interest, but the iso I posted was just a test iso really, nothing more. It's just a remaster of puppy 4.1, (including all my development files) and was never intended to be a release. The beta release I'm working on is 145Mb, and I may consider making a smaller one that's sub-100... still working out what's needed. For now I'm including Firefox 3 and a patched version of mplayer for compiz-fusion with the full set of codecs. This adds about 20Mb to the final iso, but in my opinion is worth it. Other possibilities are including netsurf (500kb?) instead of Firefox by default, and Mplayer with only the basic codec set... though as far as I'm concerned there's not much point to this. Anyway, in the next couple days I'll post the beta release version.. still sorting out a few bugs. Thanks for the notes on size, I might have a go with some of the above scripts... cheers.

Beta 5 is released!!!
G'day everyone, thanks for your patience, and for all the lovely people showing their support by following this thread. Ripple .05 is now out... the next beta version. Ripple now supports Intel cards that can run Compiz Fusion automatically, which means eeepc's are automatically configured. Works beautifully on my eeepc 701, would love some testers to try it on other models. Everything SHOULD be working out of the box,, please post here and let me know if it's not.

http://www.curiouslegends.com.au/linux/ripple/iso
Ripple is now a rebuild from unleashed on Puppy 4.1.1. The iso is 152mb. This included Firefox 3, compiz-fusion, cairo-dock, and mplayer with all the codecs. Have a look here to find more packages specific to Ripple:
http://www.curiouslegends.com.au/linux/ripple/packages
I'll post 'em as I've got 'em. Currently I've made pets for Kompozer and Gimp. Open Office 3 will be installable as a program folder in /mnt/home shortly. Ripple pets are made to automatically put the package on the dockbar, otherwise they are no different than Puppy 4.1.1 pets.
I've hacked init so that Ripple works automatically in pupmode 13 on the eeepc internal flash drive. Currently Petget is stuffed, due to the live.packages text file needing to be rebuilt. I'll do this when I have time, and post a fix here in the next few days.
Have at it folks! Lets get some good feedback happening! I'm particularly interested in bugs and other features you'd like to see, as I'll be updating this build over the next couple weeks. Cheers!

Lol! You folks are fast... try now... the iso and files were still uploading. If you have any troubles with the ripple_05 iso try the test version, ripple_beta05. The later one includes a patched init to recognise the internal drive of the eeepc as a flash drive. I haven't tested the iso yet, but the patched init file is fine. I used Puppy's isomaster to replace the old init. Let me know how you go!

Hi Dinky,
I got the iso...here is the md5sum from the download.
465c046039cd083de09d959f375ee176 ripple_beta05.iso
First burn failed but I'm onto another burn with a new cd
EDIT: burned and booted ok with a new disk..oops it was my fault with a bad cd-rw. I have ATI Radeon Mobility X1600 and so far no joy. Tom and I had a big problem with this video card as well with wNOP. I'll test this on another lappy tonight..it has nVidea. Also I'll test it on a Classmate in a bit...
Best,
Eric

Hi Dinky,
I'll put it here http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/Ripple/
Wait for the md5.txt file before downloading.
Sorry but the Florida servers are still not ready. We are in the middle of the new setup. When Florida is ready we can use it as a high speed server....soon I hope.
Best,
Eric

I couldn't wait, Eric. And I ran into some kind of error with the main file not wanting to copy from the CD to the flash drive.Caneri wrote:I'll put it here http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/Ripple/

I tried unpacking the ISO without burning it, but I got some kind of error from File Roller. Maybe it was the same problem.

I understand that this is an earlier product than the ripple_05.iso that dinky is dangling in front of us, but not letting us get.Caneri wrote:Ok...Ripple is ready here...sorry to take so long as my uploads are pitiful at home...grrr

Hi folks, here's the md5sum for ripple_05.iso (most recent beta version).
ab48adf79589716b6713f0f580c15138
Here's the one for ripple_beta05.iso: 465c046039cd083de09d959f375ee176
This iso is mirrored in the post above. They are almost the same, though the beta 05 lacks support for internal installations on the eeepc... it works, butnot in pupmode 13. The ripple_05 (in theory) fixes this issue.
Please keep in mind they are both beta versions, and are ONLY configured at this point to run automaticaly on Intel graphics cards. Other cards will be supported in the future, but aren't there yet. At tombh's instructions I'm simply using the cfwizard with a few simple hacks in Ripple. This automatically works for Intel cards. Tombh has outlined steps for getting the full gamit working, but I'm waiting to hear back from him again to go any further. For now, please have fun with these. For those not running intel cards, you'll need to follow tombhs instructions in the compiz-fusion thread to get it working. If you want a non-wobbly GUI, comment out line 5 ("e3 /root/.xinitrc" from command line) in .xinitrc. There are instructions in that file. Then run "xwin jwm" from the command line.
Ive made an extractable tar.gz file for Open Office 3 to be extracted in the root directory; it's just too big to use for a pet (needing a big pup_save file, etc). I might write a script to make this extraction idiot proof later on. I'll post it later today, so keep an eye on the packages section. It's a specific add-on as a program folder outside the pup_save, and faster than an sfs to load. Very awesome to use. The pets and add-ons I'm making for Ripple automatically add icons to Cairo Dock.
Ok folks, thanks so much for your enthusiasm! I better get off to work, teaching a theatre class this morning. Will check back tonight.
