Next Slackware Release puppy 5.0 "GTS"
Thanks to Barry's response.

"ttuuxx has asked can he coordinate the next Puppy3? Why not? I'm not stopping you, go for it.
If someone wants to rebuild Unleashed 4.1 with the latest Slackware packages, then call it 5.0, why not? Go for it. "
Anyone who want to join up and lend a hand to build the next Slackware release Just leave a comment.
If anyone has any software ideas just say so.
The people I know who uses Slackware are Bigbass, Amigo, Tronkel, playdayz and myself, plus many others. Hopefully all these guys and many more will Join.
Why name it "Series 5.0 GTS", because it will be so much different than the 3 series. It will have new programs and tons of updates, new look, and overall a real custom feel to it and because of this, It just wouldn't fit as 3.0.3
The GTS stands for "Geeks Testing Slackware" or "Grand Touring Slackware" which do you like???
The traditional Puppy release has always been less than 100MB, I've debated, considered, really crunched the figures, and well. Its just not possible to have a Viable Slackware release that small. So if we are going to blow the budget, Might as well go for it!!
The end result should be no larger than 115-125 MB, Thats including Gimp & Inkscape, I should be able to trim this 2 packages down to 5-7 MB compressed combined total, not much added weight for 2 stellar packages. Plus Maybe Firepup once I work out a couple of small bugs, shouldn't take much time.
So as a puppy release, how sweet will this be?
If anything it will show the world, What you get when a puppy is bit over-weight.
I can't wait until Saturday when I have some free time. To get started. I'm gone 11hrs a day mon-fri work&travel time so I can do a some during the week but mostly on the weekends maybe 30+hrs. First I'll be contacting a few developers for some solid advice.
Looking forward to your Opinion, Idea's & Views. This time lets keep the ball rolling and try not to sling mud.

as Puppy 3.01 everyday user, I totally agree with a new Puppy build based on Slackware, Gimp is needed in my opinion and inkscape also in default config
replace .co.cc with .info to get access to stuff I posted in forum

With regard to size, I think that maybe having a larger and Slackware based 5.x version would be a good thing to Puppy in general. This way people have a choice. People who want lots of packages and stuff generally don't care so much about size anyways, so they can use 5.x for the Slackware compatibility.
I recommend integrating Xdelta (or something similar) so that when releasing new versions, you can also release the .delta file, which can be significantly smaller. Especially during the beta/rc stage, when there are only small changes between frequent releases. In fact, you could go so far as to only release a single beta iso, then just use .delta files until you reach the RC stage, where you'd want to do another iso, then .delta until the final, which would be a third iso. That would save you bandwidth, time, and hosting space.
When I say "integrating Xdelta" I mean making a built-in handler, so you can apply them to an iso without manually typing the command. The command is simple, but some people shy away from that sort of thing. And it can be annoying to remember every command.
I'm personally more interested in the 4.x series right now, and most of my work in the near future is going to be aimed at that. I don't have a lot of free time so I won't be able to worry much about whether it works in 5.x. But the beauty of open source is that anyone is free to port it to 5.x if they want. If you/they have issues, drop me a line.
(I know I haven't done much of anything lately. Actually, I've been more or less on vacation from Puppy-related development since June. Just came out of that vacation last weekend. So I'll be producing output again before long.)
EDIT: I meant Xdelta, not Xdiff.

So I understand that this post of yours (ttuuxxx) means that you're moving up the Slackware-compatibility build to 4.1?

I may be remembering wrong, but I don't think slapt-get is all that large. Building Puppy so that it is compatible with Slackware, on the other hand, may make it larger. I haven't run the numbers, so I don't know for sure.

great idea
sounds great
if you use the unleashed system
the size wouldnt be a problem
because people could remove some packages
they dont need for a smaller size
what i really use
is browser/media player flash codex stuff
firepup is awesome
thanks for all your hard work
wanderer
by the way are you going to use the unleashed system ?

Barry should think about Ubuntu as a base for Puppy period, even greater compatibility.
But just using the Ubuntu packages for Puppy is a great idea all in it's self.
This calls for a whole new package manager, which is good as the old one is lacking.
It may even help to stabilize Puppy if achieving compatibility doesn't become a nightmare.
I've had excellent luck using Debian packages & the selection's greater than Slackware.

It should have Gslapt installed, plus the regular puppy package manager.changturkey wrote:Would there be some sort of package management/software updater/ect.?

Debian is possibility for future puppies, I came close to installing symantec package manager once, It was really complicated to get working, But for this time out, I think it will be Slackware because Barry has done it in the past, so we had a fine example to work off. Also it was a large hit with the community also. ttuuxxxsunburnt wrote:Barry should think about Ubuntu as a base for Puppy period, even greater compatibility.

For myself I don't particularly want the Gimp in Puppy (MtPaint suffices for most things I want to do) or Inkscape.
I'd like to see the "main" Puppy kept small, which means lightweight applications sufficing for most people's needs and add-on .sfs packs for people who want more.

I was compiling gimp the other day and I had it down to 3.5MB Pet I figure I can get it down to 2.5-3MB pet pet and inkscape around 2-2.5MB pet, we are talking about from roughly 4.5-5.5 MB compressed, then remove inkscapelite etc. Not much weight at allColonel Panic wrote:For myself I don't particularly want the Gimp in Puppy (MtPaint suffices for most things I want to do) or Inkscape.

ROFL.. "symantec package manager" you mean synaptic... and most debian users think it is crap btw slow use aptitiude FTW!ttuuxxx wrote:Debian is possibility for future puppies, I came close to installing symantec package manager once, It was really complicated to get working, But for this time out, I think it will be Slackware because Barry has done it in the past, so we had a fine example to work off. but seriously using raw ubuntu packages is not really all that great an idea... you get a bloated system (of course you can mannually unpack them to take out what you want and all but what is the point at that point)
also it isn't like they don't work now... manually we just don't have a package manager?
also ttuuuxxx what is the output of ldd /usr/bin/gimp or where ever the binary is that would give you a good clue what libs are missing/missmatched
Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

Do you mean slackware? If so just for compiled packages that are just as easy to install as the puppy package manager, it gives you maybe 3 times as many packages to choose from.droope wrote:Could I ask what would be the advantage of this?
Thanks.
Debian/ubuntu about 4 times.
