Following on from the 2008 poll. Which web browser should be used for the next Puppy release and why? Swiftfox isn't viable.

Javascript incapable - Dillo, Netsurf.

Since FirePup was accidentally omitted from the list, who ever wants FirePup, don't vote for the above and just type in the text box Firepup and we'll count the text. Or do it in large characters like below.

ya midori is a qt thing, I think it might take a bit before its really stable, Plus we should have a full QT in the repo to support it, I had to compile QT so I could build madori because parts of puppy's qt were missing,.

But the most Stable, quickest and most featured browser, plus it was compiled on puppy, most aren't and then it was optimized for puppy. Plus Youtube works full screen out of the box. And has custom search engines for puppy.
Please put it on the list and if it wins, I'll build a new version on series 3

Yes and No,my latest is 1.5, but it has security features upgrades from 2,3 series. The theme styles are from series 2,3. And it has a following of its own. Its just not a rebranded browser, I also have parts removed, like upgrades and etc. So yes Its a firefox base, but no its not even close to being a run of the mill firefox. Plus all the added features. Seamonkey is closer to firefox, lol Firefox 3.0 series is suppose to be the fastest firefox ever, but FirePup loads pages quicker. I spent like 5 weeks working on that browser getting it to that point. So Really i think it does deserver its own listening, probably won't win but I hope it beats Seamonkey

P.s Plus its the most stable firefox I've ever used on Puppy. For months now I've been using it and its never crashed once.

Chromium <--- too big uses wine, will never be a part of puppy until they port it to linux

Netscape Navigator <---- out of browser business AOL stopped supporting Navigator almost a year ago, the final version you can find on repo@puppylinux.ca (thanks Eric)

Netsurf <--- no save file as in the right click menu, so you can't save any files from puppylinux.ca at the moment and many other servers, it just gives you the actual code.

Kazehakase <--- never been properly packaged for puppy, kind of like the same Qt as midori

Skipstone <--- Nice but buggy at best, you need either Firefox or Seamonkey installed to use it, but it only uses the parts it needs, and the Firefox version hasn't worked yet on puppy, but has for Ubuntu. Once I managed to remove 50% of Seamonkeys size and it still ran.

HV3 <--- render slowly and uneven, and doesn't download very well either.

Really the clear choice would be in no order

Seamonkey here. Maybe I just gotten used to it, but I find it less gimmiky, maybe more honest? than Firefox, and though I used Opera for years when it was first released, I struggle with it now, and I dont like email/browser combinations.

As you know i'm a big fan of your work and or Firepup. Firepup is quicker than Firefox 3.0.0. And i do vote for it to be placed in puppy.

BUT, i still think that the web site recognition issue we have with Firepup needs to be fixed immediately. Firepup must be recognised as the 3.0 by websites otherwise alot of sites can't be used.

ESPECIALLY some of those add-ons that maybe very popular with other members. Simple Mail for example. With Simple mail you are looking at similar functionality to SeaMonkey.

My thoughts...not worth much.... but they will have to do!

Netscape Navigator 9 is probably newer than some other of the browsers on the list.

IceCat is just Firefox.

Sorry for leaving Firepup out but I don't want to mess up the poll results by trying to edit it now like I did last years.

NEVER had a problem, nary a glitch with seamonkey. My only comlaint is that it looks dated: the old Netscape decal makes me cringe in memory of windows. What would happen if ttuuxxx wove some of those spells and effort into seamonkey? Might be a contender for other people. My vote is for the monkey even though I'm using Firepup right now.

Seamonkey or Opera for me. Or Konqueror if KDE is bieng used. Not in a base puppy though KDE is just too big for that.
Was disappointed with Netscape 9 when I tried it, felt like a step backwards from the Netscape 5 I used to use in win95/98.
Actually I prefer Konqueror over both Seamonkey and Opera but as I said above the extra KDE libs needed is just way too much bloat.

Seamonkey here, for official Pup. More advanced users can easily add Firefox and/or Opera.

Me too.

And it's the fastest. Very handy not loading all those bloody (flash) adds. You can load them if you want. Just click it!

Hi, I been using Puppy for over a year now came from Win. XP using Firefox. When ttuuxxx came out with Firehydrant ( 117 mb ) version with Firefox I used that almost all the time because it worked well and had FF. It is still one of my favorate puplets. Then Dingo 4.0 came out and had Seamonkey and at first I was not crazy about It, but aside from it doesnt do full screen Utube in Puppy I enjoy using it. Use Dingo 4.0 the most now.
As far as other browsers that Ive tried there is Opera, I use that in BoxPup to veiw full screen video and it works pretty well. Boxpup is a great little puplet but I dont care for Opera.
Then Churchpup the new version with Firepup in it was my next browser. Wow it worked great. Fast , Full screen video ( except Google video ) . Text displays nice and smooth . Text on FF3 on my computers appear ruff.
So my browser vote goes to FIREPUP.

I have never really liked Seamonkey. Don't get me wrong, it works okay and doesn't look too bad once you use a decent theme, but it just doesn't do it for me. My choice would be for either a flavor Firefox or for Opera.

Of the two, Opera fits Puppy a bit better. It's small, quick, and multipurpose; with built in mail, torrent downloader (though not a great one), and setting/bookmark syncing between PCs, and superior session management.

Firefox is larger and has a longer load time, but it does a slightly better job of rendering some pages. It's bookmark organizer is very powerful, but that's less important for people without many bookmarks (great for the 511 I have, though). It can also be extended through add-ons to greatly increase its capabilities. There are add-ons that give you the much acclaimed Speed Dial of Opera (Called Speed Dial, who'd have guessed?), sync your bookmarks (Foxmarks), do a better job of script blocking than Opera (NoScript, also available for Seamonkey last I checked), better ad-blocking (Adblock plus, also available for Seamonkey last I checked), session management similar to Opera (Session Manager), and a mail client (Simple Mail). It's also open source, unlike Opera. Unfortunately, it has some serious drawbacks. For instance, it has a ballooning urlclassifier3.sqlite file. So far as I know, no one has a true fix for this. I just symlinked it to a location outside of the save file. This is not really acceptable for a program that we put in the standard release.

That leads me to believe that Firefox is not a good choice for Puppy. As others have said, there is a good alternative in FirePup. At less than 1mb compressed, it's smaller than Opera. It can use Speed Dial, Adblock, and NoScript. I bet we can even get Simple Mail working. I don't think that it can support Foxmarks, though.

It's a tough choice, however I think that FirePup would be better received by new Puppians. If we can find a way to strip Seamonkey from the Seamonkey Suite and replace it with Firepup, I'd say the choice becomes a no-brainer. I guess my vote would have to go FirePup. It fits with Puppy's ideals, it works well (at least in my experience), and it's homegrown.

Long, long ago, before AOL disimproved it, Navigator had a super feature which let you toggle image acceptance with just one click on the browser screen. This was really great for dialup, and might be due for a second coming with all the garbage we get loaded onto news/commercial sites now. My vote for any candidate that reinstates this .. ttuuxxx?

Likewise an instant flash killer, if not flash extermination.

Well FirePup comes with adblock plus, which blocks all flash and you need to click on the image to enable flash for that item. I'm also in the process of build a new version based on the 3 series of FireFox. So does FirePup Get your vote. ????? Thanks for your time.

I like FirePup, but I don't like old software. Firefox 3 (which I use in Ubuntu) is just too good with too many excellent plugins to do without.

But it probably doesn't matter, since old SeaMonkey seems to own this distro.
