OK, I checked the partition for errors with WinPE and Acronis Disk Director. The partition was fine. Then, I read the error message again. (You would think I would contemplate the error message sooner, wouldn't you)
The error was something like "the mount point is not empty". Finally, the light came on and I looked in the directory under mnt. Sure enough, I had somehow stupidly downloaded a file there. When I deleted the file, all was fine.
I just started to learn Linux about 10 days ago and I have a long way to go!!
Sorry to bother you on that one!!

K3B Problem |
|
I tried to burn an audio CD in LH gold using K3B.
It was from perfrectly ordinary MP3 tracks that Amarok, XMMS and Audacious have no trouble playing.
All are .mp3 encoded, 14400.
Drag and drop the directory onto K3B and it loads about half of the tracks, but complains for the rest:
| Quote: | Sorry k3b - Problems adding files to the project.
Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format:
You may manually convert these audio files to wave using another application supporting the audio format and then add the wave files to the K3b project. |
In previous versions of LHpup K3B worked perfectly. The message seems to indicate that the mp3 decoder is not installed, but why reject only some of the mp3 tracks? I tried several other folders containing .mp3 albums and the same result - loads some OK and complains about the others.
I did some searching on the web and found this:
| Quote: | - some claim to have
search type in libk3b2 to see if you have it installed. If you have it then mark it for installlation and apply. If you only have lilbk3b3 then install this one. |
Perhaps a lib is missing. Any ideas what's happening?

More info on K3B problem |
|
I fired up Vista and it burned the all of the tracks to CD no problems (except having to use Vista). I reloaded LHpup3.01g and I tried loading into K3B many other folders containing .mp3 tracks for burning as an audio CD. The result was that some of my previously burned collections loaded in K3B OK, but others had similar problems - sometimes just one mp3 track rejected, sometimes quite a lot. I did comparisons of the properties: size, bit rate, encoding, layer etc. of the accepted tracks to the rejected tracks and I couldn't find anything to distinguish the rejected tracks from the accepted ones. I had one folder of .wav tracks and ALL of these were rejected. My instincts say there must be some common thing that makes K3B reject some mp3 encoded files but I can't find it.
I googled some more and found that this is a problem that others also have. I found this thread that discusses exactly this problem:
http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:K5XK5ikUO_YJ:forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-21947.html+k3b+%22Unable+to+handle%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=ca&client=firefox-a
The problem was resolved for that user by using a previous kernel. That probably does not apply to LHPup. One proposed solution was this: | Quote: | No need to wait for a new kernel, all you need is (fixes both the burning and sound issues) the k3b-0.11.14-1.i386.rpm package found at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/Fedora/RPMS/
If you also burn DVD's then also get the dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8-2.i386.rpm from the same place. |
... but I don't feel qualified enough to judge whether this would be a valid solution. As I say, it's probably something simple but I can't see it.

Re: K3b mp3 handling - extra codecs |
|

Your description was spot on. Indeed we need to add 'libk3b3-extracodecs'. I couldn't find it in a slackware package, but I did find the debian package here, converted it to a .pet and it works for me. This extra package slipped by earlier because I didn't do a thorough enough test with K3b. From the K3b settings it looked as though I had all the codecs, but these are needed also.
[Edit: After double checking, it seems the decoders were there after all. ]

Hi Tazoc,
Tried the .pet and still the same result for me.
Did it twice just to make sure, rebooted and exactly the same behavior. Could it be anything to do with ID3 tags?

Could be tags or some format inconsistency, I don't really know. You should have at least these files in /usr/lib/kde3/
libk3bflacdecoder.la: 1502 bytes
libk3bflacdecoder.so: 33 K
libk3bmaddecoder.la: 1454 bytes
libk3bmaddecoder.so: 36 K
libk3bmpcdecoder.la: 1451 bytes
libk3bmpcdecoder.so: 24 K
libk3boggvorbisdecoder.la: 1532 bytes
libk3boggvorbisdecoder.so: 27 K
libk3bwavedecoder.la: 1435 bytes
libk3bwavedecoder.so: 25 K
I am able to add most mp3s, wavs and flacs to an audio cd project. Seems to work a little better to drag the files, not the containing folder. Can't figure out why some work and some don't. Might be a long shot, but check the mp3 files' attributes in ROX | properties and make sure they are root, root and have read bits set.
I suppose you could try installing audacity from a pet or something to convert. From the command line ffmpeg can convert some formats, but getting the correct options (sameq bitrate, etc.) is tricky and even it may not work for all files. Sorry I can't pinpoint what's going on--I'll keep trying.

Thanks for trying to help Taz, - I have all of those libs.
I installed audacity and did a simple test:
Take an mp3 track that failed to add to k3b audio project:
- Convert to wav -> the wav file adds to k3b no problem.
- Convert that .wav track back to mp3 -> adds to k3b no problem.
So I guess I have a work around if I need it.
There must be something in the mp3 encoding of the original track that k3b doesn't like (why else would it add some of the tracks from the album but not others?)
I did not do the mp3 encoding (album was downloaded via bit torrent) and I don't know all the ins and outs associated with mp3 encoding. All the same - if XMMS, Xine, audacious, etc. all play that mp3 track with no problems (i.e. they recognize it as an mp3 and decode it for playing) why does k3b baulk? I'll live with it for now.

Barburo,
Thanks for the update. I have not been able to solve the mystery with K3b. I'm glad you're able to work around it somewhat with Audacity. I have some .flac files that won't add to a K3b audio cd layout as well. I imagine I can also workaround by converting them to .wav or .ogg.

Have you had any success installing aMSN? I'm still unable to get past the error message "Loading TkCximage failed".

Use PETget to uninstall aMSN if you haven't already, then try this new pet. It includes Tcl/Tk 8.5.2 and fixes the version conflict with some extra symlinks. This is tested on Lighthouse 3.01g.

Error message loading Amarok |
|
I get this error message as the Amarok application opens: | Quote: | KLibLoader could not load the plugin:
libamarok_mtp-mediadevice
Error message:
libmtp.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory |
I couldn't find anything on the Forum about libmtp.so.7 - I believe it's to do with Microsoft's Media Transfer protocol.
Amarok seems to work OK though.

Barburo,
I think I found what's missing at http://packages.slackware.it/package.php?q=12.1/libmtp-0.2.6.1-i486-1 and converted it to a pet. I wasn't able to reproduce the error, so I'm not sure whether this pet will make a difference in operation but feel free to test it.

Ok, someone maybe tell me what im doing wrong here. I've downloaded, verified, and burnt the iso marked " LighthousePup-3.01g.iso 353M Bootable CD Image (3.01g Final based on Puppy 3.01)" which i would assume is the correct iso. every time i boot it tells me the pup_301.sfs file is missing, and drops me to a shell. Not sure what's going on...will give more information as needed.
