Do you mean the patched version of the standard driver (rtl8187-test-k2.6.25.16.pet)?
It has been widely reported as problematic.

If so, just move on to the proprietary driver - r8187-B-FEB09-k2.6.25.16.pet, posted earlier in this thread -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 339#252339
There's no guarantee that this driver will work, but I can't imagine it would do any harm.

HP 2133 notebook (and others) need alsa 1.1.7 or newer for the headphone jack to work correctly...ie cut the speakers off.

Just a little but annoying niggle .... help or compiling guidence appreciated.

I posted elswhere but perhaps this thread is more appropriate.

BE CAREFULL

I installed that pet package and now my system didn't boot. I have Puppy installed in the HD and i suposse that when i uninstalled the wify pet package other files was deleted and now the PC don't boot.

tempestuous i uninstall the pet package because after reeboot the PC if i wrote "iwconfig" Puppy didn't detect any interface wify. I copy & paste some comands and you can see that didn't load the modules of my two wify cards conected to the PC (ipw4965 & ralinkUSB rt73):
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

And the more interesting, if i try to upload the wify driver for my rt73 see this:

#
I forgot to type "dmesg" or other comands but if you tell me something i could help you.

Now i am going to try to reconfigure my Puppy installed in the HD for boot it.

I hope you can made another better package with the wify drivers patched.

Now i am going to try to reconfigure my Puppy installed in the HD for boot it.
I arrenge Puppy and now i can boot from the HD again. tempestous when i uninstalled your package i think that the file /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit is modifiqued and Puppy don't boot.

Be carefull, I copy the file /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit from the Live-Cd to my hark disk and now i can boot Puppy. And now i can see the interfaces for my two wify drivers but your package wirth the drivers patched don't work in my Puppy 4.1.2

Regards caka...

Do your testing with a live CD, not full HD install. Boot to the Puppy 4.1.2 CD, install the new wifi modules, reboot and create a pupsave file.
After the reboot, try to load the new Intel wifi driver -

Code: Select all

modprobe iwlagn swcrypto50=1
and run this command to see if an interface has been created -

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
If no succes, run "dmesg" to look for clues.

But these new wifi drivers may be too cutting-edge. I will look at patching the standard Puppy wifi modules shortly.

Thanks tempestuous for your job. I will be waiting for that you patch the standard Puppy wifi modules shortly.

I made the test with a live-cd installing the file pupsave and the result is the same that in Puppy installed in the HD. I copy & paste the comands and you can see that the wify drivers aren't loaded correctly. I remember you that i have two cards conected to the pc: ralink usb rt 73 & ipw4965 and booth drivers were installed correctly before install the pet package, but after that this is the result:
# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.
# modprobe iwlagn swcrypto50=1
FATAL: Error inserting iwlagn (/lib/modules/2.6.25.16/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlagn.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Here is the wifi injection/cracking utility, Aircrack-ng, plus several updated wifi drivers patched for use with aircrack-ng.
Not all wifi drivers are compatible with Aircrack-ng. From the list here
http://aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=install_drivers
I managed to patch the following wifi drivers in Puppy 4.1.x's 2.6.25.16 kernel.
- prism2_usb
- hostap (Prism2/2.5/3 PCI & Cardbus)
- iwl3945 & iwl4965 (Intel)
- zd1211rw (Zydas)

UPDATE July 1 2009:
Added the special variant of the ath_pci (MADWiFi) driver for the ASUS Eee.
Also updated the zd1211rw driver with a patch to support the TP-LINK WN322/422G.

After installing any of these wifi drivers, reboot.
The setup of these drivers for use with aircrack-ng is explained at the link provided above.

UPDATE:
Apparently aircrack-ng requires the "iw" utility plus "libnl" library, available later in this thread -

The D-Link DWL-520 rev.E1 (PCI) and DWL-650 rev.P (Cardbus) wifi devices contain the Prism3-SSF chipset, supported by the hostap_pci and hostap_cs drivers in Puppy, but these "SSF" versions also require external firmware. Puppy contains this firmware, but the unique firmware loading process involved cannot be achieved automatically by Puppy 4.1.x's pupevent mechanism.

So here is a script: /usr/local/bin/prism3-ssf-load-firmware.sh
which will load the firmware, and change the interface from the default "master" mode to "managed" mode.
This script needs to be run just after the hostap module is loaded, before the network settings take effect. A good way of achieving this is to add a configuration line to /etc/modprobe.conf which will automatically run the script each time the hostap module is loaded.

Updated instructions October 2010:
After installing this dotpet, open /etc/modprobe.conf in Geany, and add this line for the DWL-520 rev.E1 (PCI)

Code: Select all

install hostap_pci /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install hostap_pci ; /usr/local/bin/prism3-ssf-load-firmware.sh
or for the DWL-650 rev.P (Cardbus)

Code: Select all

install hostap_cs /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install hostap_cs ; /usr/local/bin/prism3-ssf-load-firmware.sh

Wifi is supported out-of-the-box by the new Ralink rt2860sta module.

UPDATE Oct 11 2008 - Eee microphone
The mic in the Eee is problematic. With older versions of the ALSA audio driver it was necessary to load the snd-hda-intel driver with extra parameters. This was achieved by adding either of these lines to /etc/modprobe.conf

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
or

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
But with Puppy 4.1's version of ALSA (ver 1.0.16rc2) a modified snd-hda-intel audio driver is necessary, using a patch from here -
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php? ... 19#p298419
It should add "mic boost" support as well.
Attached is the modified Eee audio driver for Puppy 4.1
After installing this dotpet, reboot.

THANK YOU! My sound now works! It did before, then all the sudden it quit. I am starting feel the need to stop using windows all together! I just need to get my bluetooth, mic and webcam working! It all works in Windows. And my battery life is incredibly awesome with PuppY! (it pretty good with xp, but awesome with puppy)
EEE PC 901 20GB SSD Linux Model with XP installed. Currently running Puppy Linux 4.1.2 from SD Card. Wireless and Resolution works GREAT!

hso module for GPRS modem

#118 Post by aquilai »

Hi guys,

Just giving some feedback on the hso package, I was previously using the method of connection given by wescht , which was working with an e220 modem but was unreliable...didn't work every time, I am running puppy 4.1.1. I switched to the hso package and cannot get it to work I am running hso_connect.sh and after trying to connect a couple of times to my provider in this case vodafone.es it bails saying it did not get an IP address from the provider. Interestingly (read frustratingly!!) now the old method of connecting (via the wvdial script) no longer works either.

I strange quirk I noticed with the wvdial method is that when it had trouble connecting if i plugged it into my ubuntu box and connected there, then swapped it back into puppy it worked first time.

Any ideas??

aquilai, the Huawei E220 is not compatible with the hso module.
It's compatible with the "option" module.

EDIT:
The E220 wireless modem is known by several different USB device id's.
If yours is 12d1:1003, then it will be recognised by the "option" module and should work automatically.

But if you have some other USB device ID, then you will need to use the old-fashioned method of loading the "usbserial" module with the correct USB ID's specified, as explained by forum member wescht here -

Atheros AR242 ? wifi works

#120 Post by Schism »

I download the madwifi-hal-r3942-aircrack-k2.6.25.16.pet and on the reboot I had wi-fi connection labeled ath0. All these years of watching Puppy and I'm finally free of Windoze, though it is still a good game system. I have had a copy of Puppy since the release of the 2.15 CE release. The first release that gave me a wi-fi connect was WOW's pupplet. I then acquired Exton LXDE which also gave me a connection. Now I have Flexxpup 1.5.5 (stripped XFCE) and I'm happy.

P.S. I would love to help with puppy. I'm currently working on my Associate in Computer Applied Science, with 5 classes left. I'm unemployed and a single parent and would love to give some time.

P.S. my daughter loves Edupup, she's a puppy fan too, and she is six.

Hi,

First post and surprise surprise I'm stuck! I am pretty familiar with Ubuntu but thought I would try Puppy.

I downloaded v4.1.2 from the website and put it on a CD, using a TX1138EA (TX1100 series) HP tablet PC with a Broadcom 4321 wifi adapter. For the life of me I cant make it detect it.

The wired works AOK but it doesn't see the wireless using any of the Broadcom drivers on the network wizard load module section. I tried installing the dotpet on page 5 by tempestuous that doesn't help and it doesn't work if I load the wl module either - so now I am at a loss.

WiFi setup

#123 Post by mawebb88 »

I never got 4.1.2 (or predecessors) to set up my EeePC901 WiFi via the wizard so had to resort to manually editing some files (got both WEP anf WPA working in the end). But suggest you give Puppy 4.2RC2 (I have not tried RC3 yet so might be ok as well) as with 4.2 the Network Wizards worked fine for me. Keep with it Puppy is great!

Here is the latest "sierra" driver for Sierra wireless modems.
Puppy already contains an earlier version of this driver, but the new one extends support to these models:

Aircards:
AirCard 580
AirCard 595
AirCard 597E
AirCard 875
AirCard 88X
AirCard 88XE
USB dongles:
AirCard 595U
Compass 597
USB 598
AirCard 875U
AirCard 88XU
Compass 885/888
USBconnect 881
Mercury
Mini Cards:
MC5720
MC5725
MC5727
MC8755
MC8765
MC8775
MC878X
MC879x
Other:
PC5220
EM5625

To configure and connect with these devices, go to the "Connecting using PPPD" section here
http://sierrawireless.custhelp.com/app/ ... JKTWh0ag==

I have already included the Sierra chatscripts in the dotpet package, so just follow the instructions from step 3.
Forum member mill0001 asked to be able to launch the connection script from a desktop icon, so I created pppd-call-cdma.pet
now attached.
After installing this dotpet, use ROX to browse to /usr/local/bin and find pppd-call-cdma.sh.
Right-click its icon, select "Set Icon..." which will open a "Set icon" window.
Now use another ROX window to browse to /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps
and drag an icon of your choice into the "Set icon" window.
Now drag the pppd-call-cdma.sh icon onto the desktop.
Each time you want to connect, just click this icon. You will see the connect script run in an rxvt window, then at completion, exit after a 2 second delay.

Of course, it would be better to incorporate these configuration steps into rerwin's "3G_pupdial-wireless" dotpet -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37828
Maybe rerwin can work it out?
