my memory says something about adbock and crashing but in relation to firefox 2. Have you tried without the extensions?However my experience is that the result is a bit unstable. Using bookmarks often makes Firefox close. It comes very soon back, however, as I launch it again. As long as this unstability exists, it remains as one-tab operation only. The risk of all tabs closing together becomes too likely.

You can't install them both at the same time, they use the same default directoryColonel Panic wrote:In my admittedly brief experience you can't install them both, if you do neither will launch.
FirePup looks promising on its own, however, as does Firefox 2008.Thanks for all your hard work.
uninstall both of them
then delete
usr/lib/firefox
/root/.mozilla/firefox (hidden folder)
and the one you install should work fine.

Thanks for replying.
I like the look of the program but to be honest I'm not sure about the Fasterfox plugin and what it does. Does it load all the displayed links on a page during the browser's "idle" time, which would use up a lot of my system resources (I've only got 256 MB of RAM and so have to be a bit careful)?
If so, it's a good idea but I'd like the option of turning it off when I don't need it.

It basically multithreads page downloads, instead of opening just 1 page at a time it opens a few of them depending on the settings in the bacground, That way it can speed up the pages. if you were on dialup, probably wouldn't be any good, anything else its ok. I have it preset so it doesn't download all the display links, You can enable that but I didn't think it would be good for everybody, so your in luck:)Colonel Panic wrote:Thanks for replying.

You can change the settings by right clicking on the taskbar icon for it. you can disable it, increase it, decrease it etc, but the way its set is the best for all computers and yours also, and doesn't use anymore resources, Its just harder on the servers.

Re: Experiences
I did experiment also with IBM Aptiva 350MHz 128MRAM. It just about works, since the RAM reserve is not large. As I added ndiswrapper for wireless, the cursor turned sluggish and jerking. Removing this scheme and 1M of unnecessary drivers in the save file, it was again useful.zgp152 wrote: ... my experience is that the result is a bit unstable. But alas, the above mentioned sensitiveness for launching of tabs by bookmarks persists, most likely due to the 2 extensions: NoScript and Adblock. If Firepup works nicely with these additions, it will be my choice. As I need to have a system running in 128 M RAM, I need a reduced kernel. Puppy 4.1 is a few M larger than my current Puppy 4.00, so I need to wait until a slim enough Puppy 4.1 variant is available.

Thanks, I'll persevere with it in that case.ttuuxxx wrote:It basically multithreads page downloads, instead of opening just 1 page at a time it opens a few of them depending on the settings in the bacground, That way it can speed up the pages. if you were on dialup, probably wouldn't be any good, anything else its ok. An honest one and a dishonest one
I found a suspicious site by using Google and search words Firefox 2008.
It is a scam, as is explained here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=630317
Perhaps a bit unlucky naming, eh?

But are chips really free? well unless you grow your own potatoes and somehow make some vegetable oil from corn, and cook with solar then I guess chips could be free, LOL

using firefox2008
Working well with FHlite on notepad (128mb ram). One desired feature not available though - delicious bookmarks supports version 1.5 onwards and won't install. I had it working on this machine with the newer versions of firefox. Anything possible here? Thanks again Ttuuxxx[/img]

Sorry if these problems have already been reported and fixed; I don't have time at this moment to peruse the entire thread:
1. Where is Bookmarks-->Bookmark this group of pages?
2. about:config and then filter on "middle" and toggle them all to false...upon reboot, the changes are not carried over. Strange, since autoscroll and smooth scrolling do carry over.
This is on Puppy 4.1.
HTH, SHS

Firefox 2008 and CUPS
ttuuxxx,
I'm running Firefox 2008 with Dingo, I'm dipping a toe in the water of remastering to try and create a photo-oriented Puppy. Anyway, I'd removed Seamonkey using Petbegone, FF2008 was working OK until I needed to add a printer. No sign of CUPS opening in the browser from the Printer Wizard, so I re-installed Seamonkey in case CUPS was set to go to that, rather than ' default browser '. Still no joy, but when I clicked on CUPS directly from the menu it eventually opened in it's own window ( i.e. not browser ) and I was able to add the printer.
A problem with FF2008/CUPS, or did I manage to break something? Any thoughts?

USEBROWSER="defaultbrowser"
[ -f /usr/bin/netsurf-barewindow ] && USEBROWSER="netsurf-barewindow"
[ -f /usr/local/bin/bareview ] && USEBROWSER="bareview" #from gtkmoz pkg.
This is in puppy 4.1 it says defaultbrowser,gtkmoz and netsurf
did you delete netsurf or gtkmoz?
Test the link also to defaultbrowser when Fire2008 is installed
also you might want to try FirePup v3 that I'll be releasing in 5 minutes, you'll be able to find it in additional software section

FF2008
ttuuxxx,
You're right, when I checked there's no sign of netsurf. I don't recall removing it, but I have had instances before where deleting an application took some shared dependencies with it. Good oppertunity to learn my way arround Puppy, as my Linux experience to date has been with ' big ' distros. such as Fedora and Ubuntu!

For what it is worth, it is illegal to re-distribute modified copies of mozilla products which carry the mozilla-branded names. See the icecat, iceweasel controversy between debian and the Mozilla Foundation for details.
I only came across this thread because it showed up when I was searching the forum for references to Barry's 'bareview' hack. I have also done some small hacks to the gtkmozembed browser and to the more elegant looking minimo component. They are both very useful for when you need a small browser with pretty good rendering, java support, etc.
