specialized puppy for linux sysadmin

#1 Post by J.Bakshi »

Dear All,

Hello to everyone. I'm from India and just joined to the forum for a very special purpose. I am working as a Linux sysadmin and also enjoy working with Linux. A few years back I completed my own self initiated project. You can get some idea of my interest by visiting

Building a light weight but fully functional Linux is my dream since long and I have found puppy perfectly match to my imagination. But I like to make a Linux which is Desktop oriented but focused on the sysadmin tools. I like to implement the stenography as well as other system oriented tools which are very helpful for Linux sysadmin. Rather than laptop; just carrying a USB stick with such an Linux is much more logistic I think.

To do the job I really need your kind guidance. The three things which make me things a lot

1> How can I compile and include packages for aptget ?
2> How can I rebuild a puppy with my packages ?
3> How can I get other runlevel also in puppy ?

one more thing
What is the recent package management in puppy and how is it moving ?

Any sort of links/ suggestion/ideas are always welcome.

with my best wishes to puppy team.

The oldest version still in Puppy repositories is 2.16, although I use 2.13 for my safepup project. The 2.xx versions perform well on old PCs, with newer GTK available for 2.12 and up (hence internationalization is easier). The use of zdrv was started in 2.12.
Here is new development about package management (see also Barry's blog).

Your project is interesting, so let us know your progress.
