Petch-0.3.pet -- CLI Puppy repository search and install
hi tombh
count me in too, hope Barry gives this seeeerious consideration for including in Puppy
Just the kind of small smart prog future puppy & its development needs IMHO - excellent
Can you have a look here, and see if there's anything you can do?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34137
Seems like bumptop/& a certain nameless os's tabletop demo [bumptop copy?] from a few years ago - big stretch, but that sort of links with 3D compiz, yes?

FYI, I did send John and email last week and he said he'd check it out when he got a chance, probably over the weekend.

Petch doesn't know what's inside the packages. If people created lists of the package contents (like is output by dir2pet, I believe), then Petch could parse them and build a database of what has what, but I think that might be going a bit beyond the scope of Petch, and isn't very feasible at the moment unless somebody wanted to download every package in the repos to create the lists. Not too out there, but still...
We'll definitely want to do something like that when we next improve the package management system itself though. It could be built in that way.

I don't understand why you only pick on me. Review the preceding posts.Caneri wrote:Hi Beem,
This thread is important..so let's cut the crap and use it well.

Now back to the petch business
Pets with exactly the same name and having different sizes an on the same repository at first sight is very confusing.
Try petch real.

@Aitch: Counted! Thanks
@Pizzasgood: okay.
@trapster: lib files, shouldn't be too hard, the only thing stopping that at th moment is the fact that I've put a filter on that only allows .pets, so releasing that filter will release everything, which isn't so bad, but there are some nonsense files out there that no-one wants to see in their search results -- but perhaps that's a small price to pay. Okay, here's a real geeky question, does anybody know the regular expression for lib files?
@Béèm: Yeah, overcoming that kind of thing is only really something we can do with a radical overhaul of the whole package management system I'm afraid. Which will happen.

Hi Beem,
No..I was referring to the kid that couldn't spell (moron..now banned I hope) as baiting this thread and to cut HIS crap..not you...sorry if I was not clear. I always listen to your posts and find them useful.
EDIT: This is a perfect example of the need for voice contacts..sorry Beem..I should have been more specific.

To reassure everybody, Eric and myself have sorted out the issue.
No hard feelings.
I appreciate the valuable work Eric is doing for providing a nice repository.
Hope in the north where he lives the server will not freeze in the winter.

tombh/Pizzasgood/anyone else vaguely interested
I was just following my nose from cb88s sourceforge repo link, and found this set of gems, particularly useful IMHO, are paco & Unetbootin - but this is a first page, so probably loads more for the intrepid explorer

Hi Tom,
Interesting project y'all have going here. I noticed, however, when you had to
change the name from "Fetch" to "Petch" and you remarked on it Tom you'd
said how where it began with "P" it fit in nicely with all the other small Puppy
programmes, right? Well... I've been seeing Lobster talking A LOT about this
all around the forum ("Petch") and how he would like to see it included into 4.2.
When I found out that it dealt with programmes, sort of like "apt-get" in a small
way I thought, "How cool can this be?! A programme named 'Pet Check' that
looks for files on the repos and installs them!"
And this is what I thought "Petch" was all about! "Pet Check"!
LOL!
BTW: I heartily agree with Trapster's idea about this finding those libfiles we're
always missing. If there were some way, somehow, that it could tap into Ttuuxx's
libfile library, coded to search just there for libfiles, and we somehow help
him out by sending him loads of unusual libs? I don't know how that could be done?
I've got to install this into both my frugal 4.1 and HDD 4.0 and take it for a walk.
Thanks folks!
Amicalement/Cheers!

Is this something that someone could be adapted to a browser interface? I would try and add it to the Puppy Web Desktop but I don't I know enough to make the necessary mods (at least not yet) nor do I know whether or not servage has perl setup yet so I could make a hack at it
The equivalent web interface is available here:
http://puppylinux.org/home/search
Select software from the drop down menu and search for the one you want.
