How I got sound working with a SoundMax Digital Audio Comput

#1 Post by Ambassador »

I boot Puppy from a USB Drive. The computers that I usually use are Dell "DCNE"s with sound cards identified as "SoundMax Digital Audio" by Windows. I had been having problems with these cards, the ALSA wizard seemingly not doing anything. Then I figured out to make it have sound. Note that I am running NOP and therefore XFCE.

I first tried the ALSA wizard, probing for "Legacy" Audio Drivers. I don't know if that actually did anything, but then I opened the "alsamixer" program (Type "alsamixer" in the terminal and press enter). I discovered that the sound was outputed through "Master M" and "PCM". In XFCE, the sound applet identifies "Master M" as "PhoneOut", but "PCM" is the same for both the mixer and the sound applet.

So if you are running a SoundMax digital card-equipped computer, try adjusting the "Master M" or "PhoneOut" or "PCM" volume in a sound mixer. If nothing happens, try installing a legacy audio driver using the ALSA wizard.

Hope this helps.
