Puppy Wine

#2 Post by playdayz »

To try to run windows programs, what I do is to install the wine pet from

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26717

and then download the windows program installer. Go to the directory where the installer is and then Right-Click, choose Window, choose Terminal Here. In the terminal type "wine installer-program-name.exe" no quotation marks.

It works more often than I would have imagined. If you are really lucky wine will place a .desktop file in your root directory. If so, clicking that is usually the best way to start your program. Otherwise try wine "C:\\Program Files\\folder name\\exe name.exe" This time do use the quotation marks.

If it doesn't work, you might try typing "winecfg" in a terminal, and changing the type from Winxp to win98 and doing it all again.

Wine would gives the best performance.
Some windows applications run quicker in Wine then in Windows even.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

ok so i found a download for Wine

http://puppylinux.ca/bugs/wine-1.1.2.pet

i installed xorg_xorg_dri-7.2.1.pet
then i installed cabextract-1.2.pet
then i installed the wine-1.1.2.pet

it all installed the wine config program came up then the pet package manager came up saying
success

but dependencies are missing

file /usr/lib/wine/wineesd.drv.so has these missing library files:
libesd.so.0

file /usr/lib/wine/wldap32.dll.so has these missing library files:
libldap_r-2.3.so.o liblber-2.3.so.0

The PETget package manager does not know what package has these libraries

any help would be great

don't know if this has something to do with the dependencies but i restarted PC

added the win96.EXE in wine CFG and clicked in the win96.exe in a folder it started to run but then came up with

Cannot fild import; DLL may be missing, currupt, or wrong version
File"MFC42.DLL",error 126

the program im trying to run is a police scanner program that programs the radio

If you have windows also on the PC find the offending dll in system32 of your win installation and copy it to the system32 directory of Wine.

You will find the system32 directory in /root/.wine/drive_c/..........

i have a P4 2.8 1GB Ram 120 GB HDD wi ... 32 Folder
Actually you have already all conditions to run Xp in virtual machine.
Install virtualbox on your puppy & create virtual xp. From there you will find many nice things:

- No headage, where you have to put .dll files
- Nice speed
- From virtual xp you have full read&write access to Ntfs/vfat partition also ext2 or ext3.
- Virtualxp is portable on usb external Hd. It can run on any pc (2.2 Ghrz & up)

Nice speed? I believe you, but I think you have a dual core processor? If so, how about a lot more speed?

You spend a lot of money on a good computer, then run it on a single processor.

The VMs make excellent use of SMP support. Honestly, if you'll run the same thing on an SMP supported Linux kernel, you'll find even more nice speed.

Isn't the kernel of Dingo 406 supporting SMP now?
If yes is this active at boot or is something to be done after the boot?

My testing was on P4(2.2Ghz), P4(2.8) & Amd(3200).
Higher cpu with minimum 1 Gig ram should be better.

You wont get any nice speed with dual core.
I think, the software is not capable to run on more than one core.
Not sure, I dont have dual core.

Maybe try vbox 64bit!
