Hi, yes, Ive seen dogles posts and his PM's to cindy, who is one of ecopup's long time users. Ive had the experience of introducing puppy to a couple of hundred people at least, as well as supporting home/business/voluntary sector users. While Im far from being an expert on the technicalities, we do have a broad wealth of experience in acutally implementing puppy in real life environments.

Whats constantly frustrating to me is that many of the simple useability improvements that Ive made to puppy (gleaned from actually watching and supporting a great many people use it) are not being introduced into mainstream puppy. I would be happy to post a thread to tie this experience together, but perhaps permission from the forum mods would be in order first.

If it is about puppy and not abusive, defamatory, pornagraphic or illegal, I'm sure you don't need anybodies permission.l

Judging from the 4.2 dev threads, Rob, some of your mods may be superceded, but I'm sure they would still be welcomed by those using 2 series puppy, And I've often wished for an ecomoney/cybercafe thread, as I have recommended it several times - My local cybercafes are using paid for packages, with a certain dubious OS on them, which they claim is better!!
Don't see how they can know, never having tried the puppy alternate!
& they certainly don't sell recycled PCs, so don't have the business skillset either, IMHO [nice tip, btw]

I've used pay for internet services before like at a hostel many years ago while traveling, you pop like $1 in a machine, and it turns the monitor on for 20 mins, but say if your using email etc and don't look at the time, the monitor goes off and the next person within a few minutes will have your email account, thats what I didn't like about it, no on screen warning, eg timer. But with puppy some smart developer build a script that monitors the video output to the monitor and once it sees that the monitor is unplugged it could start a killall script for the default browser. Plus if you had the browser not save any info on restart, which is easily done then it would be far more secure. Also that script could clear the temp cache also. Thats the way I can see it working securely.

Sorry for my poor English

#20 Post by Enrique Corbellini »

My country is Uruguay, South America (we speak Spanish here).
In my country, and in many countries of our part of the world, is common to have very agressive companies like Microsoft, trying to kill the rights of common citizens.
That's why we have experience in having kicked out (expulsed? is it the word?) some companies and enterprises who gave us too much pain.
Now we are having some discussion about microsfot in www.ubuntu.org.uy, and i'm speaking about Puppy there.
I hope we can also destroy Microsoft, as our neighborghs the brazilians and the venezuelans already did, at least inside some important areas of there economy.
I'd love to see you friends of English speaking, joinging us on this hopefull adventure.
Cheers

Hi just 2 things, that site is Ubuntu not puppy and ummmmm its in spanish, how are your friends of English speaking, joining you? Can't read the text. I dislike Microsoft for many reasons, cost, virus's, they are planning on releasing a new OS every 2-3yrs and upgrades are usually a terrible mess.

gee
i see you seem to be a very good programmer, cos i just visited your page.
never mind for my difficult to express, i did my best but it's definitive my natural language is not English.
i don't prefere ubuntu, that's why i'm a puppy user.
the thing is that... ubuntu doesn't remember the free software spirit, which, i understand, is to freely use and catch everey software resource, to use or to modify it. Freely means fast and easy, but ubuntu thinks more in Windows than in that.
But we don't have a Puppy Community in my country, i don't have that luck, may be in the future?
good luck

about helping children

#25 Post by Enrique Corbellini »

well, i just looked at http://plan-international.org because of what you said.
Here in Uruguay, in Montevideo city (where I live), I belong to an organization which cooperates with de Red Cross, and there we have a partner who's also been working in Ecuador.
I have no choice now a days to do something about that of Ecuator, excepting to speak about that with that friend of mine who uses to fly to that country. Possibly he could tell me more about plan-internationa.org since i'm not a professional in helping children.
About creating a Puppy community in South America... I really don't know if a community like that exists in any other country of this part of the world... i saw there's a pupplet created by a guatemalan called "oxigen", but that isn't so much, is it?
Anyway, i find useful to discuss with ubuntu users about why not to use both puppy and ubuntu at the same time, especially because i think we deserve a linux system that has all the advantages, which doesn't exist yet.
If you know some Spanish you can see some of those talkings in ubuntu.org.uy , there i'm the one called Uko.
If you are interested in giving education to children, you can also search inside that page for everything related to the uruguayan Plan Ceibal, and may be asking to your international organization if they know something about that, don't you think it's a good idea?

G'day,
Enrique you have joined a larger worldwide cause in promoting free and open source software. I am thrilled that you are promoting Puppy - it is the best.
Perhaps consider starting a Linux Users Group in your local area to promote and Market Linux in your area - from there you can expand by encouraging others to do the same in their area. Here are a couple site that will help you get started.

and

Good luck.

PS: I am so glad Australia doesnt have to play you anymore in the World Cup qualifiers :D

Dear benali72:
I've been using Puppy for about 6 months.
I like it and would like to promote it.
I've considered thoroughly all the ideas that have been exposed about Puppy's promotion in this forum but, currently, I feel that the only way I can promote Puppy is by putting into action your last idea:
On Thu 28 Aug 2008, 10:54 you wrote:* Help build the value of the Puppy community by participating in Puppy's forums
Therefore I will be very grateful if the Puppy Forum Community takes the following words as my humble contribution to the promotion of Puppy:

Though my first language has been English, because of my geographical location and because of the geographical location of many of my contacts, I find that my major drawback in promoting Puppy is that I haven't found a Puppy Forum that's friendly to non-anglophone newbies.

There is nothing that rookies appreciate more than being able to share and exchange ideas in their first language!

If we consider that
*From the approximately 6,710,029,000 human beings that are populating the planet [1], 6% use English as their first language[2]
*Of the 1,596,270,108 human beings that are currently using the Internet[3], roughly the same percentage use English as their first language[4].
*Even this forum (that is considered by Puppy 4.2[5] as the "main Puppy Discussion Forum since 2005"[6] with subforums for regulars non-anglophones[7] ) hasn't amenities for non-anglophone newbies
the least that can be interpreted from the previous ideas is that the subliminal message "non-anglophone rookies: beware of the Puppy" is being conveyed to three very significant population groups:
*Beginners and potential beginners who use English as their second language.
*Beginners and potential beginners who study English as a foreign language.
*Beginners and potential beginners who don't speak English.

Keeping in mind these facts, don't you think that a forum with facilities enabling non-anglophone sections for beginners would provide a great step towards promoting Puppy among these three major population groups?
And what's more important, don't you think that this Puppy Forum community should be the leader in providing these facilities if it really wants to promote Puppy?

Dear Lobster:
When I saw your URL was pointing out at the same thing as I had in my reference [7] I began to think I had been misunderstood and that the cause of this misunderstanding had been that in my reply to benali72 I hadn't stressed enough on the word "beginners" and its synonyms.

So I edited my reply 4 times trying to highlight those words as much as possible.

What I'm humbly trying to point out is that there are no non-anglophone subforums at the "Beginners Help (Start Here) Forum".

The non-anglophone subforums are only at the "Users (for the Regulars) Forum".

I think that keeping those subforums at the "Users (for the Regulars) Forum" is very important :D but I also consider that not having other non-anglophone subforums at the "Beginners Help (Start Here) Forum" is sending out a subliminal message that is read as "Non-anglophone Beginners: Beware of the Puppy" and it implies a great mistake  particularly if we want (as benali72 said on Thu 28 Aug 2008, 10:54) the community to be larger.

After all, it's Beginners who make the community grow and that's why the community should focus its efforts on making Beginners feel as comfortable as possible. :!:

With my best regards

Antipodal :)

Hi
Hope I'm not treading on toes here, but I think you make a good case!
I hope I speak for everyone in saying,
'If we inadvertently sent out a "Beware Puppy" warning, it was unintentional, and will be rectified'
I would hope JohnM, or pizzasgood, maybe, could add the requested subgroup to the forum

Some useful tips could be included under that heading, as a starter, especially the work done on localization scripts & multi-language support, at various threads in the forum & wiki

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38371

http://www.puppylinux.org/?q=wiki/localization

Perhaps we could get a multi-language welcome, with a 'follow-the-language-linked, subgroup selection? [Droope, care to help?]

Perhaps you could also link to this, here:

Just a few thoughts.....things I'd like to see

I can't say that I hate microsoft and I don't realy see linux as a different system anymore since it runs inside of vmware and it is easy to set up new vmware versions. I have an older laptop where I zapped out windows though and my music software distro may work better with all the python dependencies inside of a virtual machine so it doesn't all have to be put together in pieces. A good marketer should know that puppy linux can be just another windows app so it shouldn't be an us vs them sort of thing (so now the Europeans are going to sue you for being part of the anti-competitive windows-linux operating system :) )

I'm at work (hospital) on an XP desktop but all our major charting applications are based on OpenSuse running from Linux servers through VMWare virtualization. Mixing different OS's on the same box is more & more prevalent.
