Dingo with KDE desktop?

#1 Post by geekster »

I have been using linux for a few weeks now on an old ibm 390. I tried many different versions and found puppy to be the must user friendly. Its also lightning fast on my old laptop compared to windows 2000. While trying out other versions I used the kde desktop and liked it alot. Is it possible to boot puppy with that desktop? Is there a derivative that comes with kde? All info will be appreciated.

I have used for a while the KDE 3.5.7 SFS (search through the puppysearch link in my sig)
The KDE a quite slower as JWM
It is recommended to use a swap file/partition.
But yes it's very user friendly.

There is now a KDE 3.5.8 as well, I think in combination with a Muppy version.

If you use the sfs approach you can experiment at will and go back to JWM or another WM easily.

'Muppy' aka Mini-Sys Linux is a true fork of Puppy
MU the developer, is a 'Puppy master' - senior developer

It is based on a slackware compatible Puppy 3.01
http://puppylinux.org/wiki/archives/old ... muppypuppy

Muppy expects higher but still low system resources.
KDE support is there but I am not sure if it is full KDE
or similar to the KOffice suite that is available as an SFS

If you get KDE working on Dingo with the SFS let us know

Hope that is of interest :)

As said, I had Kirk's KDE 3.5.7 working and on Dingo as well.
Some programs had missing libraries. found them and copied them from puppy 3 to Dingo.
I uploaded those as a .tar.gz and I think MU has packaged them as a pet.
Well I don't seem to find that thread back where I had that discussion.
If needed I can look in my archive if I find the .tar.gz. just tell me.

Memory failed on me.
It wasn't the 3.5.7, but the 3.5.8
And the missing lib's are in a zip file.
See.

I think I will stay with jwm for now . My 266 mhz ibm might slow down if I try the kde desktop. For now Puppy is faster than windows 2000, and surfs the web very quickly. Thanks for the info.
