PostPosted: Wed 06 Aug 2008, 05:24    Post_subject:  Puppy for an 64MB Ram Laptop ?

Hy,
excuse me if I'm not in the right section but I thought it was the best for my question...
I want to know if it is possible to install a Puppy version on an old laptop with only 64MB of RAM (CPU Speed #500Mhz) ?
Maybe should I directly go with DSL ?
Are there other Linux distributions that can fit my problem ?
Thx

sguer

The simplest thing to do, as they're both relatively small .isos, is try downloading them both, burning bootable CDs & see how they fare with your machine, recognise Hware, what you like/dislike etc.

If puppy runs off the CD with 64M RAM, then if you also create a swap file/partition, and install it as a full install, then it will be friskier.

I used to have a laptop with 64M ram & a swap partition, and at some stage I would have had dsl on one partition, & puppy on another, but found I rarely used dsl as I had become too puppified.

You might try both & prefer dsl.

There are too many other linux versions to list them all. Try searching distrowatch.com for live CDs.

I have Puppy 4.1 (Alpha) booting from CD (no HD) on a Dell with 64 Ram
Has to call Browser and larger progrms from CD - so is slower - would be much faster from HD install Smile
Also try Austrumi and Deli Linux

Hy,
thanks for your answers...
My goal was to know if it was possible to install Puppy on my laptop according to the 64MB of RAM
So I burned a Puppy Live CD and the system works fine. I didn't have tested a lot of applications but I will try today.
I think I will also try to install it on the hdd with a swap partition...
To be continued...

I think what darrelljon meant to put in his/her post was you could look at meanpup.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=873068966&t=9510

this was created a while back by John Murga (yes the owner of these forums). It is cut down version of puppy 2.02 and therefore is only a 50Mb iso. This then allows you to run puppy in frugal mode and be able to load it into RAM like dsl.
that said remember this is still running quite an old linux kernel so just give it a go and see if it detects all your drivers ok. It should do.....

as you have an enormous 1 Gb of space on the HD then you could just pick any puppy and install it to the Hard Drive. It will run much faster this way and you don't have to worry as to whether it will load into RAM.

you meantion PageFile... Is this a SWAP partition you have created? This is also a great idea for such little RAM.

what you really need to be careful about is your choice of apps. 64Mb isn't much, but all the base Puppy apps whould be fine with this. Just don't go installing Firefox 2.0 and expecting it to load very fast.

Personally, having designed a puplet (Pupeez 1.0) specifically for a 300Mhz, 128Mb RAM box I would look at upgrading your RAM first. I know a 64Mb RAM system seems like a fun challenge. You would beleive the stuff you need nowadays that need more RAM. (Running Flash in a browser for example).

anyway... good luck.
