Hi

One of the best Firefox 2Series +Java+Flash mixes was this package I made up, It will auto update until Dec2008, Hopefully by then Mozilla will have the Firefox issues worked out with 3.0 series.

Firefox+Flash+Java

Next you might want to try my "Fire Hydrant Retro Lite"
You'll need to add your own browser package, Probably the one posted above.

Is that what you were talking about?

right now the best method to get what you want would be to get one of the smaller puplets like the ones by bigbass ttuuxxx etc...

my idea it that if i can get T2 working (got slackware on the box and KDE is quite usable since i have plenty ram ) i will build an absolute minimal puppy base (and of course i'll build all of T2 if i can....).... just the packages then some other guys with come in and take over getting unleashed working better... but thats just my idea anyway

after the base (not even sure if it should include X11 by default) is working we can start building add on packages for X11 and apps
Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

how about
- kernel=2.6.27
- perl=5.10.0
- glibc=2.8
- gcc=4.3.1
- perl=5.10.0
- Qt4=4.4.1
- gtk+2=2.13.7
- Xorg=1.4.99.906
Thats my wish list
If you get the min base and working compiler, I'll help build the default packages?

Hi and thnx. You have come very close to my thoughts.

I have already Fat-free 3.0 on cd. I run into some problem trying it a few months ago, maybe I was too inexperienced then. So perhaps the quickest way is glueing your Firefox-JRE-FL package with it? I have not done it yet but shall try if OK. I can transfer the pet file on a USB stick to the old PC.

I guess "autoupdate" is updating FF from Mozilla site? I've done it many times with two other PCs.

Maybe have a look at the link I posted above/below that version is 76mb and has siag office, Plus a few small apps. Plus I themed it really nice so that saves you a lot of work, Its 20MB smaller than 3.0.1 retro and Its very close to being like fatfree, But without so much removed.

Ps combined with Firefox+Flash+Java package it makes a real nice upto date small alternative, also it comes with gslapt which is handy for anything else you can't find on the forum.

Thanx ttuuxx for support.

Maybe you (ttuuxx and others) ovelooked that the old PC has 128Meg RAM?

Firefox-JRE-FL/firefox.pet expansion seems to require more RAM than I have. Installing the pet stops before expansion as 500 000 + units are needed and my PC has only 190 000 + free space. Now I recall that a few months ago I run into this same problem.

Does it help to expand the pet in another environment and then returning the generated files to the old PC?

Or, starting from square #1: is Firefox with Flash + Java in any lean configuration possible with 128M?

Copy the FF+Flash+Java say to a usb stick or another partition etc where you can get it later. :)

Partition your hard drive
5.4 gigs ext3
512MB swap. I always use a large swap, some say 256MB for that size, I personally would use 512MB , My pc has 7 gigs swap but I compile live. Anyways
Once installed your not running in memory anymore, So then you should be able to install the pet package.
Sometimes pets act strange, like having the package on the hard drive, etc. I find its best to copy them to root. Then run them
that should work.
If it doesn't then copy the pet located in hard drive from firefox.pet to firefox.tgz
then extract it to a folder, It should give you a basic error, thats ok.
now go to root and press the up arrow on rox, that will take you one level above root, take those files and copy the folders into that directory.
that should manually install the packages.
Hope that helps

Barry,

Puppy is a wonderful distro, with a very active user community.

I hope you find satisfaction as you readjust your activities.

Your accomplishments have been very significant and valuable to many of us.

Looking forward to hearing about/from you from time to time.

Best wishes,

Steve

P.S. As a retiree, I have come to appreciate that this means very different things to different people.

First among equals?

BarryK wrote:This is an opportunity, time for the Puppy-community to take control. My management style has been ad-hoc, but as Puppy has grown so to I think there is now a need for more formality -- project management tools like revision control and bug reporting. A small group can setup and manage that.

I will still be around, but as has been said "just one of the guys", a situation that I am happier with.
Would you consider taking the 'title' of 'First Among equals' or 'Primus inter pares'? Your 'opinion' does have move weight than most others. :)

Hi Canerigal

Do you know it's 3 months since you last posted yourself?!

If you need to kick Eric up the butt to get a mention, you must be doing something wrong IMHO

:)

Whilst the possibilities are discussed I am trying to pull together the strands of how Puppy works as a community:

:)

Some info is out of date or new people need adding
Don't be shy - it's a wiki page . . .

Thank you, Mr. Kauler

#138 Post by benali72 »

I'd like to add my "thank you" to the many others in this thread thanking Barry Kauler.

What a tremendous contribution Puppy is! I've installed it on several dozen computers donated to charity for needy families... Puppy has special capabilities no other distro offers (which is one reason it continues its steady climb up the Distrowatch popularity rankings).

I *really* hope the community will keep Puppy alive and well going forward.

Thank you again, Mr. Kauler, for everthing, and I hope you'll continue whatever level of involvement you might prefer.
