IceCat 3.0 Browser + Latest Flash =12MB i386

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Ok I went above and beyond the call of duty on this one :)
I must of spent 15+HRS learning all the CSS for this browser, The reason why was for 2 reasons
1st Fix most of the default font issues thatpuppy has with Mozilla products
2nd Give the browser a facelift without adding any themes.

With Css you can add backgrounds to the taskbar, Bookmarks bar, etc

So I used Barry's Gradient-grey images and applied them to the backgrounds and basically it looks great out of the box, And matches puppy default look and feel really nicely!
I might make a patch for sea-monkey also if Barry ask :)
Icecat is actually smaller than Firefox which is nice.
When it installs it will give you a small list of missing GNOME libs, Just ignore that. It will not crash because of it,
You tube plays pretty good with it, just wait until the banner has loaded before selecting a video, of it might close.
Other than that I think its an excellent browser.

Here is the background on IceCat
"Gnuzilla is the GNU version of the Mozilla suite, and GNU IceCat is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the source code from the Mozilla project is free software, the binaries that they release include additional non-free software. Also, they distribute and recommend non-free software as plug-ins.

In addition, GNU IceCat includes some privacy protection features:

1. Some sites refer to zero-size images on other hosts to keep track of cookies. When IceCat detects this mechanism it blocks cookies from the site hosting the zero-length image file. (It is possible to re-enable such a site by removing it from the blocked hosts list.)
2. Other sites rewrite the host name in links redirecting the user to another site, mainly to "spy" on clicks. When this behavior is detected, IceCat shows a message alerting the user.

To see these new features in action, some test pages are available. Fredrik Hubbe's web site can be used test free plugins.
Free plugin finder configuration

Gnuzilla runs its own plugin finder service at gnuzilla.gnu.org. To specify this at runtime, visit the url about:config in your browser, find the pfs.datasource.url attribute, and change the host to gnuzilla.gnu.org. Also change the protocol from https to http, if necessary. Be careful not to change the rest of the string (after the first single /)."

Fullscreen on youtube works if you install
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433
and don't click on the ads

Ttuuxxx,

Good package. I downloaded and installed. Replaced my default icon on the desktop.

How do I change fonts on the menus?

Also, I was not able to play youtube fullscreen. Is this possible?

I will report if I face any errors.

As always, thanks for all the packages you supply for Puppy.

Yes indeed. This is what makes Puppy so special. Dedicated base of users that really care about all newcomers. Not that everybody always
get an instant answer but the difference is huge compared to other
forum. I really want to have Puppy as my main linux distro.

So thanks to all of you for standing up for what makes Puppy unique.
Not forgetting the work Barry has done and JohnMurga giving us space.

i'm too new to know what makes it all possible but it is a good place to be.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Hello Prit
to change your menu icons goto the hidden folder in root
/root/.gnuzilla/icecat/87pdmfoc.default/chrome/userChrome.css

the number will be different than mine 87pdmfoc.default
It does that so every user has a unique Id for downloading updates.
Mozilla does the same :)
If you mess anything up just delete the /root/.gnuzilla folder completely and re-run iceCat and it will build you a new id and folder.

Once you get the settings the way you like and want to keep them say permanently say for remastering, I'll give the extra steps. Saving you tons of hours :)

well Prit it worked yesterday with the new flash for about 10 mins while I was testing, I then packaged it up and tested and it didn't work., whats happening is that the popup windows are being closed, Like a popup killer, Basically I have or someone else has to figure out how to stop it. You can disable it in seamonkey/ Icecat but that doesn't go far enough.
I'll have another crack at it later on.

Full Screen On Youtube works if you install this plugin
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433
Finally just click on the video you want and don't click on the ads. 8)

Didn't work for me at all.

Before installing that addon all was almost ok. I could look at
maybe three three different versions of "Uzun ince bir yoldayim"
and then maybe get locked.

After the install of adblock seacat dives instantly and fails to look at youtube ever.

Should I try to uninstall the addon or what? :)

Could it be interferring with another addon that I have?
Flashblock? I could try to uninstall that one first?

Yes only use that 1 add-on and see how it goes, its working perfect for me, and doesn't lock up at all.

@ttuuxxx:

I tried the addon for Youtube fullscreen fix and it did not work. As you mentioned, there is a small popup window that appears and disappears instantly. But everything else on Icecat seems to be working for me.

I could not find a Mac'ish theme for Icecat. Do let me know if you come across any. The ones for Firefox did not install for Icecat.

Some of the themes are compatible with icecat. they have tp be 3 series and also the themes have to be registered, Its a more secure type of theme / plugin by trusted sources that work. The only way of knowing which work and doesn't is actually trying them, Out of 15 or so themes that I tried to install around 5 did work and as plugins go, I only tried 1 and that worked:)
thanks
