Dell Dimension 2350 video

#1 Post by pup2learn222 »

Hi all,got this dell dimension 2350 2.0 celeron 384 ram with onoard video the problem is with onboard video I can only use xvesa but at lowest size 640x480 16. So I figure well just add a video card, another snag no place in bios to turn off onboard video.I however found bios was A00 & info about A02 which allows the o/b video to be turned off. This machine has a PCI card, at this point tried to boot puppy 3.01 & get a kernel panic. From there I started trying other puppy distros I have 2.02,2.11,2.13,2.14, 2.15ce, 2.17 either it would lock up or I get kernel panic. :(
I then try other live linux distro cd's all failed as well,so at this point I figure maybe go back 1 version on the bios so I backdate to A01 & experience the same result. For another test swapped out hd which had same result. Just so I am clear here I am able to boot into xp & video adapts to new card which I tried 2 different brand cards ATI & Matrox. While in windoz I deleted the saved puppy files but still get kernel panic.

For the heck of it I try pup 108 & it boots fine & able to adjust video settings in xvesa.
This 200 GB HD has NTFS, EXT2, EXT3 & a 588 swap.

If I want to use linux I have to use the onboard video, other linux distro's allow me to change video size to the 1200x800 where as ver 2 or 3 of puppy wont.

Personally I think it is a Dell bios thing but I am not sure or experienced enough.

So what are my options ??
If I use onboard video card but how do I adjust video resolution to a higher one, xorg doesnt find anything while boot up or while in puppy.
Is there something I am missing, bios has very little in it to choose from..

BTW these 2 video cards work in a HP with onboard video machine while using pci video card.

I have tested Puppy 4.0 on a Dell Dimension 2350.

Xorg fails (screen can't display the video settings). Xvesa runs but only with resolution 640x480 16.

Anyone who have succeeded using Xorg with dell dimension 2350?
