Vlc 1.0.6 made from the ubuntu binaries works fine in Lucid Puppy.

I should add that it only works for me after I have installed Mplayer from the Puppy Package Manager.
When uninstalled MPlayer, VLC no longer worked.
I reinstalled MPlayer and it went right back to working.
