Can anyone take a minute to explain to me what the difference is between a .pet and a .sfs package and why one would be used over the other. I have no idea how to install an .sfs?

You don't "install" an SFS file.

In the frugal puppy installation, downloaded SFS files will be detected by the "BootManager Configure Utility" found in the System submenu in the Menu bar.

It instructs you to place no more than 3 SFS files in the right panel if you wish them loaded at boot. You have to UNcheck the box that says IGNORE the SFS files placed in the right panel!

For a full install, it works somewhat differently. The BootManager Configure Utility indicates that you should place the SFS files you wish to use in the /mnt/home directory, but I don't have a full install and will defer to those who do.

Why would I use an SFS file instead of a .PET file for my fully installed PuppyLinux v4.1.1?

I cannot get Java plugins to install into my FireFox 3.0.3...

Well, I did get the ff3_pack_f10.sfs to work on my system by placing it in /mnt/home and changing the name to ff3_pack_f10_412.sfs (might not need to change the name, but I did on my MacPup412 system using the bootable CD)

The only problem I see is that it should have flash version 10 and it shows up as flash version 9 when I use adobe's test site. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the already installed version for seamonkey?

I still don't know which is better .sfs vs .pet, but at least this way it is easy to try another version without having to uninstall anything.

The "BootManager Configure Utility" found in the System submenu in the Menu bar does show the sfs file in a full HD installation. However, the sfs file cannot be used. You must mount the sfs manually and copy it's contents into the appropriate directories.

A pet file will install the program into the proper directories, thus for a full HD installation is the better choice.

A frugal installation can use either. Personally, I prefer using sfs files for my frugal installations.

Thank you so much for your ff3_pack_f10.sfs. It works great and has updated though Firefox update to the current 3.06 version.

(mostly just a datapoint, but any explanation/help is welcome)

Using Retro 4.1.2, I couldn't get either ff3_pack_f9 or _f10 to work.

I tried with not-retro, and there the _f9 sfs worked, I didn't try _f10 (I couldn't get networking or Xorg going with non-retro) (when I say "worked" I mean it added firefox to menu, and firefox ran when I clicked it, but of course all it could say was 'Can't connect')

With the retro 4.1.2 - I have frugal install, I tried getting rid of my personal save file and starting from scratch, but puppy didn't add firefox to menu in either with either _f9 or _f10, and "which firefox" said nothing and "find / -name firefox" didn't show anything.

When I click on the sfs file in Rox, it says "Sorry /mnt/home/ff3_pack_f9.sfs is already mounted and in-use by Puppy"

So I don't know if it's Retro or something about my hardware specifically.

FWIW, What I really want firefox for is one of its add ins, that lets you save youtube recordings to flv files, so other suggested approaches are welcome.

Machine is Dell Optiflex with 384K GX110, circa 2001 i think

Ive taken my first stumbling steps at .pet package creation to make a .pet out of this package. You can get it (along with very simple newb instructions on installing and desktop shortcuts) here

P.S. To download youtube vids, the easiest way is to use the "www.kickyoutube.com" site. When you are viewing a youtube video, just type "kick" in between the "www." and the "youtube.com" on the address bar at the top of any browser. For example

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6czC1gD98Q

becomes

http://www.kickyoutube.com/watch?v=z6czC1gD98Q

You can then select the format of the video, and click "download". You can also use it to convert music videos into .mp3's for you mp3 player or for playing from your hard drive.

Hello.

I added the Flash10 version to a fresh install of Puppy 4.2, but only Java appears to be installed.

~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so is a symlink to /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.15/plugins/libflashplayer.so except that the file the symlink points to does not exist.

However, libflashplayer.so does exist at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I moved the symlink to the trash.
Then, using Rox Filer, I dragged libflashplayer.so from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to ~/.mozilla/plugins/ and chose the option to create an absolute link.
I launch Firefox and navigate to about:plugins and now Shockwave Flash shows up but reports version: Shockwave Flash 9.0 r159
I then navigate to Adobe's Testing Site and the flash player works but also reports version 9.0 r159.
However, Facebook's Farm Town works so I am happy.
I am unhappy, however, that navigating away from Facebook's Lexulous still causes the browser to crash/shut down completely.

Found a Flash10 plugin at /initrd/pup_ro4/usr/lib/seamonkey/plugins/ and overwrote the file at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

Now I have Flash10 although the same crashing behavior described in my previous post is still present.

Once added to boot menu there is no sign of a shortcut on the start/internet menu...

How do i run it?!
