Google Chrome official beta release

#1 Post by GrumpyWolfe »

Hi All

It seams that Google has decided to release the first official beta release for Linux. It is the 4.24.30 release. I have made a pet with the added libs for it to run on puppy and fixed up the luncher. So give is a try and see if you like it or not.

http://mywolfe.googlecode.com/files/Goo ... me-004.pet

I have a MyWolfe I am testing with Google-chrome as the only and default browser. and there always is a but, it will not run until you create a save file. Other wise you get this code in a term window when test why.

Code: Select all

[1205/154344:ERROR:/usr/local/google/home/chrome-eng/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/base/process_util_linux.cc(502)] Not implemented reached in void base::EnableTerminationOnOutOfMemory()
[1205/154344:ERROR:/usr/local/google/home/chrome-eng/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/base/process_util_linux.cc(502)] Not implemented reached in void base::EnableTerminationOnOutOfMemory()
Cannot chdir to / after chroot: Stale NFS file handle
[13644:13644:207047974:ERROR:/usr/local/google/home/chrome-eng/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/zygote_main_linux.cc(522)] Failed to read from chroot pipe: 0
[13644:13644:207049217:FATAL:/usr/local/google/home/chrome-eng/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/zygote_main_linux.cc(613)] Failed to enter sandbox. Fail safe abort. (errno: 0)
But once you have created a save file it runs as normal no problems.

First off, the file downloads with a .gz so a simple rename to a .pet works.
(on virgin 4.21 frugal BTW)

"HOWEVER, these dependencies are missing:
File /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/2/libgconfbackend-evoldap.so has
These missing library files:
libldap_r-2.4.so.2 liblber-2.4.so.2 "

I refresh the menu and it makes a button under the Internet tab in JWM 2.
"Chrome Web Browser"

it starts up asks if i want to import anything or make it the default browser.
i said no
then i see it open for 1/6th of a second then close.

I'm willing to try anything else that may be helpful to get it to work for the 4.2 users

I have checked the file and even re-downloaded it to check and see if the server did something to it and all I get is Google-Chrome-004.pet and I built this on a system that is a T2-8rc or equal to a 4.3.

Try and install this set of libs and see if it gets it going for you have to go to work check on your luck tommor.

Just downloaded it thanks. Really fast mirror which at nearly 20MB is just as well :)
Will install on NOP 4.3 after I back up my save file and give it a try. I was looking through the web site last night and wondering about it. Any advantage over Firefox/Seamonkey?

I was using it yesterday in 4.3.1 (yes download was fast - noticed that) and seemed OK - also made use of Flash (the notorious piece of non working proprietary software that crashes browsers), so it was immediately useful.
Advantages . . . Google is likely to base its OS around this browser - hence the focus.
Being Puppy and it being Open Source, we might end up with Cpup
Chromium Pup - is that the name of their OS?

Proxy settings seems to be disabled by default in the browser ( Beta). I am using NOP 4.31 and had to use "edit launcher" from the right click menu and fire google chrome --proxy-server="proxy_ip_address:"ip listening port" and in my case it was something like "google chrome --proxy-server=127.0.0.1:8181" to use the webfiltering proxy.

Apart from that, it is really fast, but ofcourse without the many comforts that we enjoy with Firefox.

CPU usage never jumps beyond 25% ( AMD 64 bit dual processor) which is a great plus compared to firefox 3.x where we see often 100% cpu usage with older processors (50% in latest processors) when loading script and image intesive web pages.
Another advantage is we don't end up having pixelleted and distorted iimages when we enlarge ( zoom) images ( image scaling ), which is a great plus.

Having said all the above advantages, for people like me who have used firefox for too long, using google chrome is tiring.

I am glad that you all are finding it a friendly browser just want you to all keep tabs on the root/.cache and the root/.config they car grow really fast at one time the Google Dir under .config was 27 megs of file but had development turned on that may of had something to do with it.

As of right now I am unable to make it the only browser install in a puplet for it will not run until you first make a save file.

But have fun I like it

I am using it on 4.12 bare-bones at the moment. It is very fast. Page loads are quicker than with FF 3.55 and flashplayer is very responsive.

Hey, GrumpyWolfe,

I'm a Puppy n00b, so excuse me if this is a dumb question, but what do you mean by "make a save file"? For Chrome? or for Puppy? If for Chrome, how do you go about doing it?

Thanks!

What I was referring to is that I used woof to build a puppy that has Google-chrome as the default browser but in order for you to use it you have to set up your xserver get to the desktop and then reboot to create the save file that is for all of puppy. Then when you come back to the desktop Google-chrome will run without errors. Not sure what will happen on a full install for I only use frugal installs. For some people if they got to the desktop and set up there internet connection and clicked on Google-chrome and got the error message I put in my first post, I would be getting email that I just did not know how to use woof or that Google-chrome was not install right. It seams to have to do with root set level.

And I myself feel that I am not a Linux expert far from it I have just used the tools BarryK and other have made to build or config puppy and I can sometime work at it and put a few libs together in the right order to make it work. I just poke around till it works.

Hi GrumpyWolfe,

i installed Chrome on Puppy 4.20 (full install), also installed the libldap-2.4.pet, but i still get the following missing dependencies:

Code: Select all

These dependencies required by GoogleChrome-004 package are missing:
File /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/2/libgconfbackend-evoldap.so has these missing library files:
 libsasl2.so.2
Do you know were to get this libarary? Now Chrome starts and exits within a fraction of a second.

thanks for your help!

Uden and magerlab

It may be that only puppy 4.3 and newer will work because this Google chrome is for Debian's latest release and they are not back-porting it as for as I know I just got home from work will look at it more after some sleep. may be able to get the libs in to separate pets and let you guys see if they work for you.

No problems on latest MacPup

#19 Post by rickyricardo »

Downloaded then installed clean on latest MacPup (based on 4.3.1). No missing libs or other issues. I'm running MacPup on a 10 year old Dell Latitude C600 as a full HDD install with a swap partition. I've been using Chrome on XP for many months as primary browser and am delighted to be able to use it on my Puppy machines.
