Sub_title: The Windows Browser with a Puppy Soul

Many of you know the windows browser k-meleon (pronounced chameleon). It is small, lean, fast, friendly, and fun. Does that remind you of anything with a tail? After some experimentation I have found that it runs very nicely with Wolf Pup's pet version of wine-1.1.1. With one exception it is basically install the pet and go.

<Add>Here is everything needed in one pet: wine, k-meleon with extra dll's, flash and flashblock, and a menu entry. This should be the only file needed. It is a 24MB pet that expands to around 85MB. It will install k-meleon in /mnt/home so if that is not what you want you can use the separate files below.

Wine/K-Meleon All In One http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy400/wine-kmeleon-flash.pet
Download, click to install, Restart JWM, and click Internet: K-Meleon.
</Add>

Here is wolf pup's wine.

Here is where to get the tar.gz for K-Meleon-NX-18116

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read.php?1,80850
<Edit>I forgot to mention that you will need two dll's msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll which you place into the k-meleon folder.

Here is one: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr71
Here is the other:http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71
</Edit>

You can get the full package as I use it from my server
http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/puppy400/k-meleon-nx-18116-pd.tar.gz

The procedure is to 1) download and install the pet of wine and then 2) download the k-meleon tar.gz and click it to run pupzip and uncompress it. Here is the one exception: wine and k-meleon seem not to like layered file systems, so unless you are running a full hd install, it seems best to put the k-meleon-nx-18116 folder into mnt/home/ outside of (I think) the layered files. It will run from anywhere but it seems to crash less (not at all for me actually) from /mnt/home.

Once you have located the K-Meleon-NX-18116 folder then 3) open a terminal in that folder and run "wine K-Meleon.exe" I should mention that it will give a bunch of messages in the terminal window, but that is what wine does--they are mainly messages for wine developers (I am told). So ignore them unless you know what they mean and can fix them Wink I should mention also that wolf pup's posting says that opengl is required--in my experience you will get a message that means it is missing, but *the program will run fine without it* (at least on my machine--it runs no faster or better with glx and dri installed--which is good since glx and dri give me a blank screen about half the time!). The same is true concerning the other two dependencies the pet installer says are misssing, esd and ldap--the missing dependencies don't appear to interfere with wine or k-meleon's functioning.

This NX-18116 version of k-meleon is an unofficial build that is stripped for action in wine and linux (running the latest gecko from seamonkey 1.1.11). It uses no XUL which means (supposedly) that it runs lighter and faster. Autocomplete in the url address bar is a problem in linux so it is disabled--use the bookmarks instead to remember sites. It is also running in windows only mode--no tabs. That said, it is running very nicely for me in dingo 4.00. I often use it and I don't notice any huge discrepancy between it and kirk's minefield or the default seamonkey 1.1.8 on this pIII-900. On my faster machine I was amazed at how fast wine and k-meleon start. I do enjoy the ability to run one of my favorite windows programs in my operating system of choice.

If you get into it you can download the windows version of flash and install it with "wine install_flash_player,exe" from within the folder containing the downloaded flash installer. This combo is also running nicely for me.

The only time it crashes is when I run it from /opt or anywhere else but /mnt/home. If you do that it might crash (or it might not) when it is opening. If this happens you must delete the entire k-meleon folder and uncompress it again. (That is what works for me anyway.)

hope it works, pd

Intriguing possibility . . .
With Wine + K-Meleon, we would still have a smaller Puppy and Windows compatibility for good measure . . .

A Puppy Whine (Puppy + Wine + Windows Freeware) would make an intriguing halfway house puplet . . .

Very interesting Smile

if wine gecko downloads but won't run its for similar reasons to the above.....ie if the .wine folder is within unionfs......move this externally and all is ok....must be a file system that can have symlinks...i use an image file.

there is another thread about this...aufs may work better.

Sub_title: Self-Contained Wine, K-Meleon, Flash Pet

I will add this link to the first message in this thread about running k-meleon in wine. This pet contains everything needed in just one file: wine, k-meleon and extra dll's, flash and even flashblock, with a menu entry. It will install k-meleon to /mnt/home, so if that is not what you want you will have to use the separate pets.

thanks, pd

Hmmmmmm,...this is interesting. I already had wine installed on my Puppy 4,....so I just went to the Kmeleon web page and downloaded it (as if I were using windoze). It downloaded and unzipped just fine,...and I'm using Kmeleon right now. Seems to be running pretty quik, even if it's running in wine. I'll need to find the executionable file to add it to the desktop.

Not sure, but yes, it was WINE Gecko that was downloading and failed due to me using unreliable WiFi for internet. Any idea if there is a way to download it manually?
