cannot install my ethernet modem!!

Hey! I got a little problem with the ethernet. Automatically it doesn't configure itself, manually I entered all the IPs and everything I could get without calling Tech Support of my ISP (they keep you years waiting on the phone!) The thing is that I wouldn't like to call the ISP in order to configure the ethernet so I can get online, is there anything I can do, or anything I'm missing? Please ask any info you need about my comp (I would post something but honestly I don't have a clue!)

What kind of modem? (Dial-up, DSL, Cable?) What brand and model? Are you connected straight to an ISP, or indirectly as through a router? Which version of Puppy?
