NEW Opera 10 browser

#1 Post by Mic67 »

Well I am taking the NEW Opera 10 browser for a spin...all I can say is WOW.

Here is why:

"Opera Turbo

Using state-of-the-art compression technology, Opera Turbo unclogs your connection so you can get to your content. Opera Turbo easily delivers 3x to 4x the speed of slower connections and can offer broadband-like speeds on dial-up."

---------------------

A good URL to test this would be www.mls.ca
Well for me anyways because I know what kind of perfomance I get when I go there, there is a huge noticeable difference. I have 512k DLS. But if someone has dialup, I think the claims that Opera is making regarding this browser appear to be true, so far. If anyone can test out this "turbo" feature and has dialup, please post back.

BTW I am using LINUX, but that ought not make any difference with regard to this feature.

At the bottom - screen left there is a little tachometer - click on it to highlight it and when surfing it will display the amount of turbo effect - I have seen it go up to 4x.

Or you can go to "Tools" > "Quick Preferences" for Turbo activation.

Still alot of testing to do but with regard to flash sites and java scripting, I am impressed.

http://www.sizlopedia.com/2009/03/16/op ... -browsing/

"Opera Turbo is nothing but a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. Not only does it help you surf the web in a faster environment but also saves your cost of browsing.

It is a perfect new feature for users to make use of in scenarios where they have limited or low bandwidth e.g. on dial-up connections or while using internet through 3G tethering on your phone. When turned on, Opera Turbo will display the average compression rate (such as seen below)."

"Interestingly, Opera Turbo uses a technology called 'Opera Web Optimization Proxy' which is quite different to the one used in Opera mini, this means that web sites layout will look exactly the same as the original website though the image quality might be affected a little bit due to compression.

To test out this new feature, head over to Opera Labs. It will be available as a standard-feature in future Opera versions."

I’ve tested the turbo function and it does seem a bit faster except in some cases the image quality is compromised heavily when in turbo mode. Secure connections(SSL) are not routed through opera servers and they will be connected directly so there is no threat to your sensitive data. This release is compatible with Windows/Mac OSX/Linux."

"However, Opera’s latest testing browser, Opera Turbo, hopes to make those connections just a little bit more bearable. By compressing sites before you download them, Opera Turbo can provide you the exact same site, but with only a third to a fifth of the data, making the sites you visit load many times faster."

"How it Works

Opera Turbo works by passing your data through what it calls a “Opera Web Optimization Proxy

So far this Turbo implementation is very noticable, there is some what of an issue with Youtube and flash, as it appears to use a place holder for some of the flash adverts, but if you click off the turbo there there is no issue like freeze. But I am stil in the user BETA stage of testing this. But as noted in the above quotes it has sig. advantages

Ok...when I go to the above site using Opera 10 with TURBO ON - this site is heavy with flash adverts - and what the turbo does - it does not show them but usualy has a place holder "f" in a box, which when your cursor is over top of it it become a > "play" symbol, click and it will play the fash advert.

Now this is really cool. Because what the Turbo is doing is acting like a "HOST LIST" it is saving you flash hogging advert bandwith and CPU power, and for a site like this particular weather web page with such extensive flash adverts, the loading of the page is even faster.

Since I have 512K DSL the turbo function is sig. noticeable

it may run better if you get libaudio.so.2 (ldd says its missing)

I have done a cursory look for it in ttuuxxx's lib repo - not there - gotta keep looking I guess - not sure even where to get a source package??
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.
