Here we go again! Subject description: D945GCLF2 motherboard |
|
Since Intel has released a version of this board with a dual core Atom Processor and some other upgrades I'm going to incorporate tests, comments, etc on it in this thread rather than starting a new one. Besides the upgraded processor Intel has added some other upgrades that may or may not pose problems and/or driver issues for Puppy. Since I have just received the new board I'll be running some tests and will report back here on what I find - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It is still priced at less than $100 and if it lives up to its billing it should be a good performer. I'll be back as time permits...

D945GCLF board and Puppy 4.1.1RC |
|
Good new for Puppy users! 4.1.1RC boots up on this board with no problems - sound and network both work "out of the box" - I'm playing WMA format music files from an NTFS partition using Pmusic 0.3.3 while I'm writing this in Puppy with no problems so far. Have not tried running a DVD yet - but given past problems with Gxine I'm not holding my breath on that! When I get the dual core board set up and working I'll update on that here - more another time.
Edit to add - Tried Gxine with a movie DVD including switching from regular to full screen and back - no problems in the short time I had to try it. I am Impressed!

D945GCLF2 motherboard and Puppy 4.1.1RC |
|
Good news - as with my last post - 4.1.1RC boots up OK - sound and network both are working out of the box and Gxine works for DVD playback. I'll be doing some more tests but have not come across any showstoppers yet. More another time.

Has anyone tried this MB out with S-video? I've been trying but it simply won't work.
It boots right up until X windows starts, then it loses sync, (or blanks w/older versions of linux).
You can verify it by booting either a live cd of ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10.
I bought this specifically for a media center (to be left on all the time, for it's low power usage), and have the TV as the head.

Of course. Puppy's current 2.6.25.16 kernel is not configured with SMP support.
If it's important to you, try MU's puplet with 2.6.27 kernel
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34341
or wow's advanced puplet which uses MU's kernel
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=36592
This kernel was configured with SMP, HyperThreading, and Multicore support enabled.

Tried a 4.1 (kernel 2.6.25.16 #1 smp) I downloaded couple months ago.
That worked fine reporting 4 processors (2 core X 2 logical per core).
For some reason I thought 4.1.1 had incorporated smp.
Is smp on the radar as a fixture in future releases?
For the D945GCLF2 to boot from USB flash I had to change BIOS setting for USB drives to emulate fixed disk. I was also able to boot from CF via a CF/IDE adaptor however it was excruciatingly slow. On further examination hdparm reported a read performance of 2.3MB/sec. The CF is Sandisk ultra II at 15MB/sec. I will try a higher performing card.

Been gone for awhile from the forum so you will all tell me this has been covered.
I have the dual core D945GCLF2 and the only puppy to work so far is 4.1,
not even the retro 4.1 works.
Problems so far no LAN and bad or no sound.
Sound, none, or click click click, or multi of the same like woof woof at start repeats many times.
All this have fixes??
I have 2GB ram and SATA HDD and SATA BLUE RAY, DVD, CD.
Does puppy have a blue ray player?

EarlyTV,
Recommend that you download and try the 4.1.2 release - on my system which is quite similar in specifications to yours - after the network wizard and alsa config have been run LAN and sound work quite well - as a test on that board I've got 4.1.2 booted up in RAM and I'm browsing the net and listening to a CD. I'm not aware of any support for Blue Ray yet in Puppy but it would not surprise me if someone on the boards here is working on it.
As for using earlier versions of Puppy with either the D945GCLF or the D945CGLF2 I'd say to check the early posts in this thread - I had some problems with the D945GCLF board early on and with the help of Tempestuos got them sorted out. Since these boards are quite similar in most respects some of those fixes may work for you as well. Good luck and let us know how you come out.

I have been a Puppy user for about a year. I have been off and on with this list for about the same amount of time. I am running an old 660 Compaq. I use it mostly for listening to online classical music. To some small extent I have used it for websurfing and email. My main system is XP. It is comming to the end of its supported useful life. I would like to get away from the whole windows system. To this end I have searched Puppy forum and found this thread which I have read competely. Part of which I understand and part I do not. I am marginally competent with command line and would like a system like my old 660 which runs from the desk top now that I have set up. I would like to build a Puppy system with the mother board listed in the title. The actual mother board now available is a D945CGLF2D. I would like use it for the applications listed above and also Open Office. My uses are not extensive and the Puppy build will be fully sufficient for my needs. I would like to run Thunderbird, Firefox, and Open Office, as I am somewhat familiar with them.
I will be starting on the project this winter. I will use the full 2 gig of ram.
Would booting from an 8-16 gig stick have any drawbacks? I have about 8 gig of data that I would like to bring ove from my old XP sytem. I plan to start working more with my old 660 system to practice basicPuppy system skills. Do any of you see any great deficiencies in this plan?
Thank you.
