Nice Puplet

#16 Post by ragaman »

Vesta ran flawlessly on my desktop and laptop. One irritating thing though- what's that Windows Vista logo doing in the Start button? How do I replace it with something more "Puppian"?

Looking for a Mirror for upload

#17 Post by izonic »

I'm looking for alternative place to upload since some people are having a problem with the download link. If you know a place where i can upload VestaPup, or if you can, let me know please. Also I was out of town when i made this pup so when i get back home ill start working on Vesta more and remove some unwanted stuff to make the iso smaller. It's weird that some say it Boots up as pcpuppyos which i didnt use so that seems odd, but im glad to here it installs as Vesta without a problem. One thing you should know is if your going to just use it as a live cd for the first time, you need to close the rss feed and weather then reopen it and configure it for it to start working again, this is because your going to have to make a save file after your first time using it. If you do a full install to hdd then you shoudn't need to worry about it. Glad to see people are liking it! =)

About changing the start button, well i can't exactly remember but i think i remember seeing it in an icon folder under the root directory. The default name i believe is xp start button .xpm something like that cant remember the exact name of the file. There is a script which i tried to change so the button wouldnt have to be named that but it just reverted back to the xp name so i just replaced the image which seemed to work well.

Vista Icon Be gone!

#19 Post by ragaman »

Thanks izonic. Found the file you pointed out inside the folder /root/.usr/local/share/pixmaps/. Renamed the original xp-start-button.xpm to xp-start-button4.xpm. And renamed xp-start-button2.xpm (with Tux) to xp-start-button.xpm, restarted the system and viola!

use it on a compaq evo desktop p4

works fine, hd install workt fine to.
video, sound network right out the box (network needed the setup tool like normal)

so verry satisfied but one question about firefox
it does not remember the yes on default browser question.

more disturbing is the use of youtube movies

i starts , works, than suddenly stops en starts werre it stopt but with a short increas of volume and goes further
have the settings of flash to 10mb cache

some others problem with that?
now maybe it is a package size problem with the adsl.
were can i set it to the good size?

Looking for people that might be interested in helping VestaPup Grow! =)
Just grabbed it a few days ago, booted it on my 7600GT-equipped Celery box, and fell in love. What a WONDERFUL distro!!!

I just added it to the box permanently -- only the second distro I've installed there (the other being a Ubuntu/Kubuntu mix). Very very cool!

Now... To get Nexuiz running. :D Image

Great pup, thankyou very much - this is a keeper for me too - Opera as the default browser is perfect for me.

A few idiosyncrasies in the screenlets.

Trying to move the panel creates another panel, can't remove 1 panel, all or nothing. Changing the panel theme also creates another panel on top of the first one. When you move the top translucent panel the original default panel is underneath. If you select the panel it comes to the top obscuring the desklets, so I can still see them, but I can't interact with them unless I move the top panel away. To get access to them I have to move all the screenlets off the panel, move the original panel back on top of the new themed one and then move all the screenlets back! (The problem persists after reboot).
(realtime - now)
Whilst moving the original panel it suddenly jumped to the left of the screen and attached itself top and bottom, i.e it became like an elastic band in the middle. At the same time the taskbar at the bottom disappeared, as did the hidden one at the top. A small box has appeared at the top of the screen with the Opera icon in it! I can move that but nothing else. My 'middleclick' for windowslist has also been deactivated.
The default WideScapeWeather screenlet needs a zipcode, I assume this means it"s for US only. Couldn't find any relevant information Googling.
The other weather screenlet created a large white cloud covering the bottom right of the screen! Deleted.
The 'Homepage' & "Get more Screenlets" options from the panel screenlet open in Firefox not default browser. The 'Get more Screenlets' link is 'not found''.
If I come across any other bugs I'll let you know. Overall I find Vesta very impressive, just got to train this pup now. Time for a reboot no save.

If you want me to 'consumer' test any future versions let me know.

Well, Nexuiz drops right in. Just unzip it in /root (or in my case /root/games) and play. Both glx and SDL versions seem to work here.

UT2004's demo also seems to drop right in. Very nice. :-)

Enemy Territory installed fine, but there isn't any sound. I had similar issues with it and Ubuntu on this box, so I need to do a little searching and fix it the same way.

I like the look of it very much
Just wondering if you plan on making a lite version say without the following
OpenOffice
Thunar
maybe java and related programs, Just that 465MB is a extremely large for Puppy and not many regular users could enjoy such a beast..
Something in the 200MB ballpark would be ideal.
Anyways excellent work and looking forward to your next releases.

Vesta but...

Cool and groovy interface.

1) Where is the control for Skydome?
2) How do I install xmms?
3) Is there an app for internet radio? I need LiveIreland and other stuff like with iTunes radio.

Thanks.

I haven't installed this but from what I've seen in the past to use the cube just hold the left click the mouse on the desktop and drag it left or right or up or down.

Just configure it to use XMMS in the preferences

Also if you have some live radio feeds you would like to work, Just give the the webpage url and I'll get you the links you need.

Thanks ttuuxxx,

I find out you hold down ctrl-alt and the left mouse button to rotate the cube.

I'm trying now to find the Skydome control.

I got the LiveIreland feed working in gxine using the Win .ram choice. http://www.liveireland.com/

Another one would be Green Mist Radio:

Regards.

I can't find any reference to Skydome in the CompizConfig settings manager. I'm running Vesta Pup. Very frustrating.

Open ccsm look at the desktop section , click on the "desktop cube". Then click the appearance tab. Look near the bottom for skydome, click the little triangle next to it to see your options.

I absolutely LOVE VestaPup! It gives all the effects that Vista promised, but wasn't up to on this puny laptop.

If only I could either get rid of the screenlets, or make it so they stay put after reboot. They can't be deleted using the screenlets manager, and they always go back to the far left side of the screen (covering up the icons there) when restarting.

Any hints?

I have just discovered this great Puplet.
Yes, I am a little late to the party, but that's the story of my life.

Can't get Compiz to work.
Ctrl+Alt+rClick gives the application menu.
Ctrl+Alt+lClick does nothing.
Using Xorg not Vesa.
Any changes I make to Xorg gives a lockup.

I have run Compiz before on this machine, using another Puppy, but don't remember which one.

Suggestions, anyone?

For anyone looking for this now, it is available at
