Hi all, I've been trying to connect to my windows xp using this pnethoodsambashares but it only showed the computer but they kept asking me for the username and password which is strange as I've never used any password ( I have already shared all the folders)

I was frustrated and I heard that using linneighbourhood is better for connecting network with xp then I installed linneighbourhood but I missed some dependencies so I tried searching and now it worked yet, I couldn't even locate any other computers, which I could do with pnethood.

The question is,
1. What am I supposed to do to connect to windows xp in this 4.00
use pnethood or linneighborhood?
pnethood could locate the computers but can't access any of them
lnhood couldn't even locate the computers.

2. After I installed the linhood I installed the samba but again I missed the dependencies again as I don't know how to find the dependencies, could it be the reason that I installed this incomplete samba and affected the network in pnethood as pnethood used to be able to access windows shares.

I'm so puzzled with this 4.00.

My spec is
P3 600
HD 6 GB
RAM 128
VGA Onboard
Sound card Onboard

Edit - if you haven't read this yet, read Will's post first - I suspect he is right.

You mean it only showed the computer you are trying to connect from? Or the one you are trying to connect to?

Pnethood. Puppy no longer uses linneighborhood as it is a GTK1.2 application and Puppy 4 only has GTK2. It should still work though if you install GTK 1.2.

At the moment linneighborhood is necessary to connect to a network with 98, but it shouldn't be with xp.
Linneighborhood is much more difficult (too many settings that don't mean anything to the average person), but I guess if it works it is better than something that doesn't work. I posted my configuration file somewhere for linneighborhood, so people could just drop it in, so you could have a look for that. But it would be better if there is a problem with pnethood if we can find what it is, because Puppy will never go back to linneighborhood. Pnethood is quite new, so it could have problems we don't know about.

-Please post a screenshot (or describe what you see) when it asks for the password. Can you see all the shares on the computer, but you can't connect to them?
-Please confirm that it doesn't work if you try to connect either putting something in for the username and password, or leaving those fields blank (it isn't clear from your post that you didn't just give up because you saw these fields).
-Please click the "view log" button and post any interesting content.
-Please run pnethood from terminal, and post any interesting terminal output.
-Have you connected to this computer before (e.g. from another operating system)?
-Do you know if there is anything unusual about the setup of your network (or the server)?

I missed your reply on the other thread.
For reference you do not need to install the samba pet unless you want to start a samba server.

I think I understand your confusion with pnethood, correct me if I'm wrong.
Your shares do not need a password and you are confused by the presence of the password entry fields.
If so then just leave these boxes blank and hit the connect button which should be shown next to the share name.

I have been trying to use pnethood but without success. It finds my LAN disk which has a Samba server and I can mount a share. But when I show the share it does not look too good. On the other hand if I use the File Share wizard in ROX with my Samba server IP address it looks fine. Scanning using the wizard does not seem to work. See screen shot for the comparison (both are the same folder on my Samba server. The bottom one is correct and there should only be 2 files both mp3's).Any clue what is wrong with pnethood?

This is probably an issue with pnethood not setting the iocharset or codepage when it does the mount.
I like in the UK so I was not aware of international problems until recently.
Have you tried using it with both cifs on and off?
What country are you in?
Can you post the output from running
smbclient -NL my-servername-or-ip

PcurlFtp uses the ftp protocol, pnethood uses smb or cifs. Your NAS unit provides access to its files using either protocol.

I live in France but only use English (UK English if given a choose). Software, hardware/drivers e.g keyboard. So I don't see it as a isocharset or codepage problem

I have tried both cifs on and off (by the way with the default pnethood scanning time it found nothing. I had to changed this to 30 secs which is the longest in the drop-down list. This new scanning time did not stick though until I quit pnethood and started it again. With no cifs I can mount ok and show without having to enter a username/password (correct as I have not set one on my LAN disk Samba server) but with cifs it fails to mount with an error message about wrong credentials or the server is just refusing.

My LAN disk has both a ftp server and Samba server if that helps. Using gFtp I can see the files just fine.

Using linneighborhood on DSL I had the same problems of unreadable folder and file names hence my switch to Puppy.

smbclient -NL my-servername-or-ip gives? A long list. But I could not figure out how to copy/paste it here!!. Tried redirection to a file but this only output the last few lines. How do I do this?

Rgds

drag over it with the mouse and then middle click where you want to paste it.

I'm probably going to be offline for a few days so maybe someone else can pick this up.

Update 24/7/08:

Anyone got an idea on whats going on here? Thanks, Mike
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally got the the output from Rxvt. Installed Sakura instead. I was then able to copy paste from one tab with the output in to a second tab running the mp editor and then save the file. Then open it in Geany and copy/paste here:

PostPosted: Sat 02 Aug 2008, 06:27    Post subject:  Puppy 4.00 Pnethood samba client to a LANdisk solved

I have fixed the problem I had seeing my LANdisk files. It was not a iocharset or codepage problem. I think Pnethood is not starting cifs correctly. I found at http://www.sat-industry.net/forums/dm-7020s/31674-unable-mount-cifs-share-not-directory.html that using at the console:

echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled

should fix it and it does!

I can now scan using Pnethood and cifs without and Username or password (correct as do not have one on my LANdisk shares) and then use Show to launch ROX and see the correct file names and folder names. I have a similar problem on DSL (Damn Small Linux) on another ancient laptop using LinNeighborhood so will check out the same solution on DSL latter.

By the way I don't know if its a clue but before executing "echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled" Puppy Hardware-Interfaces Information (PupScan) showed cifs as used by 0 but after executing the command it show cifs used by 1.

I now need to add this command to an executable script and get it to start automatically when I boot Puppy. Sure this is easy just need to Google a bit.

Rgds Mike
