Macpup Dingo
@cartz:
Thanks for the good feedback. I would recommend starting afresh instead of re-using an existing pup_save file. I have had some problems doing this with another version.
@HairyWill:
Thanks for the link to that thread. Very informative.

Regarding wbar, you can read the below thread. It is 7 pages though.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=19742
Two things you can play around with are
- editing the /root/.wbar file to add or remove or change icons/programs
- editing the /root/.xinitrc to change the options in wbar.
You can get all options available by doing the following command in console.
Hope this info helps.

Am glad you liked Macpup Dingo.
When you say, Hotpup did not work, does it not show you any icons at all? I will have to check this one.

Yes I did see that error message. I have posted on the Hotpup thread requesting help. I am not sure myself. It looks like Hotpup settings script is not able to modify the .xinitrc.

Pardon me if this may sound stupid ... but I have been trying to reach http://tipsforeveryone.com/macpup/ for several days now and I cannot even seem to reach the URL from northeast China.
So I was wondering if there are any other mirrors for this particular type of Puppy derivative?
I'd really love to try this out.
TIA for any response.

cartz - if you did want to try upgrading a save file, you would simply need to edit /etc/puppyversion to put in a lower number.
HW - I thought Barry's whole objective with Dingo was for it to be able to load into ram with only 128MB?
What is "looking in .local"? The trash is in ~/.Trash
I can't comment on the disk usage tool - if it is Gdmap you are talking about, I could never figure out how to tell anything from it - it seemed like "visualisations" from a media player that don't have anything to do with the actual music.

This belongs in a different thread, but you will need to communicate the problem a little more clearly.Slightly off subject, n both machines I now have several versions of lunux/puppys - all show the trash as Empty . yet looking in .local or using the graphical disk usage tool - I see lots in trash !

If you delete files they never go to the trash in the first place - they are gone forever (unless you use some file recovery software in a hurry). To send files to the trash you need to drag them to the Trash icon on the pinboard, or "open with" the trash if you add it to the open with menu. If you haven't used the Trash, but are going to start, I suggest you upgrade to the latest version (I put it up last week or something), as the new summary feature isn't backwards compatible, and hopefully it will be present in the next Puppy.If I go in to delete the files manually from trash off the drive, will they go from trash straight back into trash ? or a special command to clear it out "pooper scooper ?" A forced delete of files generally - shift+del doesn't seem to work, is there an equivalent.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Thank you for the link. Downloading Macpup and will be trying it out soon enough.
--EDIT--
Macpup is pretty, functional and fast on a Sony VAIO VGN FZ-25. Thanks for the hardwork on getting this to us. So far, no real issues to report.

having a look at init in 4.00 shows thisdisciple wrote:HW - I thought Barry's whole objective with Dingo was for it to be able to load into ram with only 128MB?
Code: Select all
#if there's heaps of ram, copy pup_xxx.sfs to a tmpfs...
#v4.00 lowered rom 230000 to 220000...
if [ $RAMSIZE -gt 220000 -a "$NORAM" != "yes" ];then #256MB system. note, only checking physical ram.

Dougal confirmed that he has fixed that issue with Hotpup in his latest version. You can get that from this thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29331
I will make sure I test and include this in the next update of Macpup.

MacPup Doesn't Release CD -- solved!
I upgraded my RAM from 192 to 256 today (took out the original 64 and added a 128 -- that's all my motherboard can handle). Now Macpup completely copies the .sfs file to RAM and the CD is free.
By the way, the standard Puppy 4 didn't have this limitation. It's MacPup that somehow needs just a little more memory to operate from RAM, it seems.

Thank you for verifying. I did read somewhere that Dingo might use more memory when compared to its predecessors even thought its size is smaller. I cannot validate it though.
Maybe I will try running it on mine and see the memory usage. Have to wait till I get home to get on my Macpup laptop.
Glad to hear that your system now works well with Macpup.
Macpup is 95MB and Puppy 4.00 is only 87MB. So it will require a little more memory than Puppy 4.00.

hi
i love the style! jepp and with the right .sfs included it rocks my machine. but i havent figured out how to add panel miniprograms. like the gmixer. it was so handy just to use mouse wheel over the little icon, which is now missing. so i tried to symlink it to the desktop with drag n drop. didnt match. so how about th e customized task bar? couldnt i use the miniprograms anymore like "kill process"? or system monitor?

Am glad you liked it. .
You may like to know that Buddapup is the most visited url on Puppylinux.ca.

I am glad you liked it.
If you are familiar with adding new programs to the taskbar panel in Icewm, this would be the same way. You can look at the files in /root/.icewm/ directory.
There are Icewm experts like Whodo, Ttuuxxx and others on the forum who would know exactly.

I do see around 5000 visits to the Buddapup directory. But I dont have a way to measure unique attempts or downloads.
On Macpup, I have the links on my server and can measure it better.

I used burniso2cd to burn both a single session and multisession CD. On my Thinkpad T61p, Macpup tries to boot, but I only get the "loading Stage 2..." text and then it reboots. So I don't really even get a Grub menu. I get into a boot loop.
Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else has experienced this.
