I didn't see a subforum for introductions, so I will put my first post here, as searching the forum seems to be an acquired skill.

I like to wget the whole forum and grep it. LOL - Not really but I would have a better chance of finding things that way!

In all seriousness, if there was a way to use wget or an alternative to download just a topic, it would help. I find myself trying to research specific pups, and then working offline during the installs and configurations.etc.

Both are dedicated google-search engine for everything "Puppy". Just plug in one or more search terms and --of the over a million posts on the Forum-- a list with links of those relating to your search terms will be generated in Last-in, First-out order.

There are a couple other, similar, search engines mentioned on this thread. But sometimes just knowing that there is a thread, somewhere, will get you to the sought for information faster.

The Structure of the Forum may help you locate that 'somewhere'. Each Puppy has its own thread on either the Projects or Derivatives Section, less often and for the obvious reason that assistance may be sought on a pre-alpha endeavor, on the "Cutting Edge" Section. Almost all applications have a thread on the "Additional Software" Section. Some "Homegrown" projects, however, are on the Projects Section*. The names of the other Sections should suggest their content. If in doubt, technical questions can be posted to the "Users" Section. FYI, to post to a thread, click the "Reply" button; to start an entirely new discussion click the "new topic" button.

* When the Forum was established there was only one Official Puppy. Any other was a Derivative (Spin) obtained via remastering. At that time, the Projects Section was for Projects not relating to the creation of a Puppy or Derivatives. Before Barry Kauler, who created Puppy, retired he published 'Woof' an application to create Puppies. Puppies created using Woof, and 'Debian Dogs' created (IIRC netinstall) via now appear on the Projects Section; Remasters of such original creations on the Derivative Section.

no razzie for your query - your point is a really good one, and I recall that someone much earlier in the forums posted a 'how to' to have an entire thread presented on a single long web page - all the better for archiving and off-line research and reference. I'll have a quick squiz for you (a good opportunity to check that my signature search links are still current), cheers

Is this the sort of solution you were looking for?

Actually, I think I recall that you can enter some modifying codes in the address bar to present all /selected pages from the given thread. I don't see a problem with a similar address + codes being entered into wget for downloading an entire thread - but I'm a numpty so real life application is bound to be more complicated...

Update2: trapster posted this hint back in 2008 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 732#223732. I guess it should work, but I dunno. I hope that gets you started?
Update3: the code of trapster's works for downloading consecutive thread pages, but doesn't concatenate them into a single document. Perhaps there is a workaround...

I swear I've seen a way to tell the forum to display more, or less, posts per page. I haven't been able to find it though.

Hi Flash - and I've seen at least two posts from you recommending judicious bulk-downloading due to server and bandwidth limitations in those threads I've linked above - and you mention the default setting of 15 posts/page on the forum display, but in my hunt I haven't found the solution that you also recall. Hmmmm....

Unfortunately google ignores everything inside code blocks... unfortunately half of the comments that I may want to google are in code. We really need to upgrade the forum - I can no longer post from chrome on my android phone and it stopped automatically log-in between sessions. I am busy working on my single file C standard library right now, but I do intend to come back to puppy before it gets _too_ much unintentional bolt-on bloat.

thanks for going "above and beyond" in your response and providing some history in addition to the search engine tips. I often give more attention to your replies when I run across them in research, as you seem to take much care in composition and content.

appending "&ppage=xxx" to the url works well to retrieve a page with all the posts on one page, where xxx is or exceeds the total number of posts, and provided the append is placed at the end of the unmodified url of the opening page. The opening page is the page first retrieved when a link in the forum index or sub index is clicked.

That seems to work well when doing a general search of the whole forum.but it is about as far as you can drill down into one of those long multipage threads with google, When using a search term like:

container site:http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=109958

google is not all that productive, whereas the same string used as a search term in duckduckgo, returns quite a few pages within that thread

That's exactly what I used to do but instead of Google, my choice is DuckDuckGo. Eventually I just got tired of typing site:murga-linux.com everytime I want to search. So I've been using a silly little search page I made years ago for my personal use. Not the greatest design, though.
