Hi charnisingh

Does this support IAX as well as SIP?

Can it also interface to Skype?

Can it do conferencing, or video even?

Would it be suitable for this project, maybe?

Gizmo-Project

#3 Post by charnisingh »

Hi Aitch,

in reply to your questions i can only say gizmo does all what skype does or

may be better and free and or lesser cost. as far as your other questions

whether it is good for particular program, it depends on 2 factors, beside

what i have provided as gizmo dependencies ,its basic requirement is

gtk-2.6.10 or higher. and works well in windows as well as in puppy 4.

please download and try for yourself or check out at Gizmo-Project now

it is called as Gizmo-5. the other factor is requirements of your project/

program, for that i have to study the program, so far i have just gone

thru it casually but i will look into it. i can make a sfs file , just one sfs

file for gizmo and its dependencies in case some bodty wants it. i

have already uploaded at the same site sfs file for skype including

qt-4, all in one pkg.. i have also uploaded many sfs files to meet the

basic requirements of newbies and all other pupp users and hope

these wll be helpful to others

1. gizmo supprts SIP, i do not know about other one.

2. it support conferencing.

3. it does not support skype interface.

4. it works from Gizmo (pc) to Gizmo (pc)

5. or Gizmo (pc) to telephones for max. Counteries, free or minimum
cost.

6. i could not understand the whole concept of the project but what i could understand in nutshell the communication will play a major role in it, it should be cheap and consume lesser bandwidth , which gizmo
does as gizmo can work on even modem..

thank and regards.

I tried downloading your Gizmo-Project dotpets, but they don't seem to include the main Gizmo5 program itself, yet claim to be be around 15 MBytes in size at puppylinux.ca
In practice the gizmo...libstdc++5.pet file that I received is only 392kBytes and the gizmo...libstdc++6.pet is only 952 kBytes. I presume therefore that they just include the libraries but not the actual Gizmo program? Did you make a dotpet of that too? I can't see it anywhere.

not the libraries...

#5 Post by mcewanw »

Hmm...
I just looked inside the dotpet for gizmo...libstdc++5.pet and it doesn't contain the lib either. Seems like the download from puppylinux.ca is shutting down before completion.
Maybe Caneri needs to look into that.
Could you possibly upload md5sums for your files too? Really need that for large files like gizmo. Thanks for your help.

Gizmo

#6 Post by charnisingh »

Dear mcewanw,

Gizmo-project Dir. at server contains 4 PETs.

gizmo ending with libstdc++5 can be used in puppy 3 as puppy 3 has
libstdc++5

gizmo ending with libstdc++6 can be used in puppy 4 in fact puppy 4 has both of libstdc++5 and libstdc++6

the names are original pkg names of the Gizmo-peroject but it does not mean it contains these libs.

Gizmo-project, beside above (libstdc++xxxx) depends upon:-

1. GConf2---which is given there as PET, req. libs have been added.

2. orbit2..... which is given there. thanks to MU for these (1 and 2)

yours is a sever problem as you do not seems to be downloading the
the full PET pkg.

if the problem persists please send a PM to prit1 of this forum who is a tech. helping caneri at puppylinux.ca. last i know they were working on the server.

please let me know if there is any other problem.

PS. you must install 1 and 2 before you install Gizmo-project.

PS. Gizmo5 is not yet available for linux. gizmo-3.1.0.79 was the latest.

Hi Charni and mcewanw,

We have just completed a fairly extensive set of changes here at .ca

Please look at the downloads again and see if they are shutting down before they are complete and please report errors here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29691
Sorry for any problems.

Hi William..good to see you around again.

Best,

your gizmo dotpet works on Puppy 2.17.1 too

#8 Post by mcewanw »

@charnisingh:
You dotpet, gizmo...libstdc++6.pet also works on my Puppy 2.17.1 system (as well as on Dingo). I haven't tried video yet, but voice calling is great and my system is only a 500 MHz cpu Pentium III with 256 MByte RAM, Dell CPx laptop.

I've looked inside the dotpet and discovered that you haven't stripped the binaries down to their minimum size (using strip -s). If you recreate the dotpet by stripping the binaries: /usr/bin/gizmo and /usr/lib/libsipphoneapi.so... you could reduce its download size by several MBytes. Some of the provided wav files in /usr/share/gizmo/sounds aren't really necessary either, so removing some of them would help cut the dotpet size down too. (For example, some of the sounds in /usr/share/gizmo/sounds/hold_music could probably be removed without loss of function; i.e. just leave one of them maybe - you would need to experiment to determine which wav files could be removed without function loss).

Anyway, good job producing this dotpet. Very useful for instant messaging services as well as voice and video chat, and with open protocols too, so much better than skype IMO.

maybe stripping the binaries won't give such a big saving

#9 Post by mcewanw »

Actually, on looking at it again, I'm not so sure there will be so much of a saving in stripping these binaries. Worth a try, but the final dotpet might not be so much smaller afterall. I'm not sure but I plan to check it out anyway.

gizmo

#10 Post by charnisingh »

dear mcewanw,

thanks for your Gizmo-project test OK report.

i am not a tech, i am only a worker with lot of free time to kill, so i go on fiddling all the time with odd applications. these applications need lot of time for testing and re-testing , you can understand how much labor i must have spent on such applications and i do not stop til the result is OK.

i have made so many pets and sfs files for my own use which all works in puppy 4
i have also made one big sfs "supporting-dingo_400.sfs" whichis about 334 mbs and
contain 1. open office 2.20, 2. devs 400, 3. 4 nos media applications, 5. Gizmo-project-
complete with all needed dependencies, 6. skype complete with all its dependencies,
7. good collections of graphics, 8. firefox-3b4 with java+flash ,these all in one sfs file and by using this i do not have to add much of other applications.

thanks and regards.

there's also meebo online for which you only need flashplayer & no install, can do video/audio conferencing free, just need to sign up

http://www.meebo.com/

however, I've been looking at the gizmo project, and SIPphone and also a liveCD of Trixbox, centos based, which I've d/loaded but not tried yet

As I said to Lobster I have a UK Tesco IPphone which uses Iax protocol, the same as asterix

Phonepuppy, with all protocols enabled, plus video/audio conferencing anyone?

smaller gizmo dotpet for Dingo or Puppy 2.17.1 at least

#12 Post by mcewanw »

I successfully managed to build a new smaller gizmo-project dotpet (under 10 MBytes download). Some details here:

mcewanw, I have just downloaded and installed your new dotpet.

I am using puppy 4.0

The installation went well but gizmo would not run from the menu. I tried it from the console and it reported that the libgconf-2.so.4 file was missing. I then returned to http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/foksyfeyer/gizmo-project/
I read the readme file and downloaded both the libgconf and orbit2 pet files and installed them.

This time gizmo ran. I created a user account and all looked good. Unfortunately when clicking on some options gizmo crashed. I can't repeat it at the moment as I can no longer get it to run as it gives me an error that says GDB could not be found on your system.

It appears I will have to uninstall and re-install.

I also noticed when I installed gizmo it did report the missing dependency, libgconf.

When I installed orbit I noticed there were many dependencies missing, probably a dozen or so. I'm assuming some of these missing dependencies may be the culprits.

Is it possible to include all of the required dependencies?

It would be much easier to install if everything worked out of the box without having to add or modify.

With a larger package as this it might be useful to distribute this as a SFS file.

What I really hate about windows, thats why I no longer use it, is the way it spreads files all over the hard drive in numerous directories. It is very untidy and difficult to maintain. Personally I would like to see all required files in the one directory or related subdirectories.

Gizmo looks like it has potential. I won't stop using Skype just yet though. I will keep an interested eye on it's progress.

Thanks

re: gizmo crashing - need further info

#14 Post by mcewanw »

Hello Smokey

Thanks for the report.
I haven't actually had time to test gizmo out much myself yet but haven't experienced the crash issues you mention when running it in Puppy 4.00 or Puppy 2.17.1.
I'd certainly be interested to know exactly when and what is causing it to crash on your system so that I can see if I can replicate the situation.
Yes, as charni points out in this thread you do need to install Gconf and orbit first before gizmo-project will run.

Cheers

William

and mobile phone installation . . .
http://gizmo5.com/pc/
but whether that will be available on a conference call
Dunno . . . Anyone know? :)

I just tried that for the first time, and Gizmo crashed (I had to kill the gizmo processes).

I had reported on the Skype/now Gizmo thread that Gizmo crashed on Puppy 2.17.1 at least when pressing one of the buttons near the bottom of the main screen (fifth to the right).
Now I think that button is in fact the one for calling up the preferences screen (I'm not sure though).

However, and oddly. Since trying to save settings and having the crash, I've tried that again, and now its not crashing (and the preferences settings change I made is being stored...). Also, it isn't crashing when I press that button I referred to above... Not so far anyway, and it used to crash every time when I pressed that button... Long may my new good fortune last.

now refusing to crash - damn thing

#20 Post by mcewanw »

It is utterly refusing to crash now...

I doubt this will be true, but slight flicker of hope that the very first time you try to change settings (via File/Preferences) and then shut the program down it crashes but maybe writes some config file at that time, such that from then on it doesn't crash? I suspect I'm being overly optimistic.
I suggest trying it a few times to see if it keeps crashing.
I'm going to boot up Dingo now and see if it crashes when changing settings there on my system.
