NYP - special Eclipse edition for Java developers

#1 Post by MU »

I uploaded a special version of Newyearspup02rc7 (with some bugfixes).
This version is intended for Java developers.

So I post it in an own thread, as here we certainly will discuss specific Java related issues in future.

It is based on the Midi version, and includes:
Gimp, Opera, Firefox, older Seamonkey, Gnumeric, Abiword, Mplayer, E17, Compiz, Cairo-dock, wbar, python/gdesklets, bluefish.

Some programs were removed, like the games, XaraLx or Google Earth.

It includes especially for Java:

- Eclipse 3.4.1
- JDK Enterprise edition 5_06
- Xampp 1.7 (Mysql, Apache, Perl, PHP, Proftpd)

- Wine 1.1.14
- Firefox for Windows
- JRE 1.6_12 for Windows
- Resourcehacker to assign custom icons to runjar.exe.

runjar.exe is a small exe to run a /resource/main.jar, so this is a nice tool, if you want to deliver your program to others.

- 3 different graficsdrivers for most nvidia cards.
- Ati catalyst 9.2 graficsdrivers.
As Eclipse is a resource hog, it just makes sense to use it on a modern computer.
So these graficsdrivers are important to get optimal screenresolutions, or if you write programs using OpenGL.

To quickly test a jar in "Windows", I use Muppy-Filer.
Highlight a jar, then click the button "open with".
Then select the list entry "wine java -jar".

I included in the eclipse workspace my small database utility, that uses a Mysql database and the SWT Library.
I also included it as installed standalone Linux and Windows programs, that just depend on a Javaruntime without special extensions.
This thread discusses it in detail:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39112
So you can look at it as an example, how to set up folders for both operating systems.

Notes:
If you have a new Nvidia card, choose "Nvidia driver 180 (8000 series)".
It seems to work with all modern cards, while the other "180" does not (will be removed in next release).

The size of the iso is 770 to 805 MB, depending on the filesystem.
So you might need a DVD to burn it.
I did not check, if it fits on a 800 MB CD (let me know, if you try it).
