building well |
|
The new website is being built nicely. Thanks to the silent volunteers.
Maybe it will help to announce the particular areas where work is ongoing and the current person spearheading the effort, so volunteers would know who to communicate with for offering help and ideas.
I've been seeing the names of Hairywill, prit1 and of course tombh and Lobster there, and would love to read about how the new tasks are being grouped/divided.
I can help in the area of projects, so if there is such a section, I would love to contribute in the area of teacher training using Puppy Linux in elearning.

Hopefully there is a bit of an answer here
http://www.puppylinux.org/home/latest-news
Tom and I have been making blog entries and comments on bits of site functionality as they happen but I suppose there is no overall picture.
Editors and other contributors at any level are encouraged. If there is something anyone would like to see then shout.
As far as collaborative projects go, the wiki space is there and it might also be appropriate to put in something on the community page or add a new page in that space.
An important question is,
"What is the site for?"
I see two answers
1)to help people in the community keep track of what is happening
2)to help orientate newbies
I think the rss feeds should make a valuable contribution to 1.

Will, I just had another flit through the pages, & noticed a fair number of technical enquiries cropping up
I had this idea for a noob scratchpad:-
Don't know where to go? - What to do? If this is for you?
- then leave a memo on the scratchpad
We'll get back to you
Please do not leave email addresses, here
It will be deleted/archived after 7 days(/Weekly?), to avoid clogging the pages with rubbish - Thanks
What does anyone think? suggestions for which page to put it on?
Aitch
PS: I edited a couple of minor things/apostrophes & didn't realise 'till I saw your comments after, about tracking - sorry, 1st attempt
Also I tried to add a comment on the home page, to ask people not to post technicals but I couldn't edit it
PPS: Why skype & not SIPphone/IAX? I don't have skype! ditto poo!

Excellent
Hopefully the requests for help will slow down, the forum link is more obvious and I just keep replying, get help on the forum.
A sort of graffiti wall is an interesting idea though I think it is better to keep pointing people at the forum
Existing comments can be deleted, if they are no longer relevant then I don't think they should have a life of more than a couple of weeks.
I don't know what you mean about tracking unless you are referring the 'log message', it is helpful if you put a short comment here "typos | grammar | fixed URL | rewrote the whole thing"). This is not essential but makes it easier if it needs reverting.
I don't think anyone can comment on the homepage.

Because people are already using Skype . . .
It has been compiled for Puppy 4
Already contacted by Prit1 and had a chat
Will go onto the other computer and see if anyone else is about

gizmo5 for voice, video and instant message chat Subject description: almost replaces the need for Pidgin/Gaim too... |
|
Lobster wrote: | Quote: | PPS: Why skype & not SIPphone/IAX? I don't have skype! ditto poo! |

It has been compiled for Puppy 4 |
I've been trying out charnisingh's dotpet of gizmo5,
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29454&search_id=482323945
which unlike Skype uses the open protocols SIP for voice calls and Jabber for instant messaging, so can be used instead of Pidgin too for lots of things...
Quote: | Chat with friends on Gizmo5, MSN, AIM, Yahoo! and Jabber for free. |
Gizmo offers voice and video calling too.
Anyway, I have discovered that charnisingh's gizmo...libstdc++6.pet also works on my Puppy 2.17.1 system (as well as on Dingo). I haven't tried video yet, but voice calling is great and my system is only a 500 MHz cpu Pentium III with 256 MByte RAM, Dell CPx laptop.
charnisingh's dotpet is a 15 MByte download, but I believe it could be easily cut down to around 10 MBytes because in the current dotpet the binaries haven't been "stripped" (e.g. the program /usr/bin/gizmo and the main library /usr/lib/libsipphoneapi.so...). Some of the provided wav files aren't really necessary either, so removing some of them would help cut the dotpet size down too.
So, basically, a 10 MByte gizmo5 dotpet could provide Puppy 2.17.1, 3.xx, or 4.00, at least, with voice, video, and instant messaging chat facilities, with the ability to call other SIP phone networks free too. The chat feature also interoperates with Google Talk and I believe the voice part will soon too.

@mcewanw, Lobster
there's also meebo online for which you only need flashplayer & no install, can do video/audio conferencing free, just need to sign up
http://www.meebo.com/
however, I've been looking at the gizmo project, and SIPphone and also a liveCD of Trixbox, centos based, which I've d/loaded but not tried yet
As I said to Lobster I have a UK Tesco IPphone which uses Iax protocol, the same as asterix
Phonepuppy, with all protocols enabled, plus video/audio conferencing anyone?

smaller dotpet of gizmo |
|
@Aitch:
I've successfully managed to build a gizmo-project dotpet as a smaller package of around 9.5 MBytes by stripping the binaries and juggling things around a bit. Same functionionality as the dotpet produced by charnisingh but much smaller in installation size.
I produced my gizmo-project dotpet on Puppy 4.00 (Dingo), but also tested it on a clean install of Puppy 2.17.1. Seems to work fine on these Puppy versions, but more testing is always good...
Seems to me that gizmo could pretty much replace Pidgin and Skype. It would indeed be interesting to compare gizmo with meebo in terms of facility and performance.
I'm in the process of uploading my gizmo dotpet to Caneri's site. I'll have to get Eric to move it to a good place thereafter. Once all that is done I'll post the download link.
I'm using gizmo on an old Dell cpx laptop (450MHz cpu) with 256 MByte RAM on 56K dialup modem. Working great with voice (haven't tried video as yet; can't imagine that will work well on dialup though...)

new smaller gizmo dotpet here... |
|
Okay, I've very temporarily uploaded my new gizmo dotpet to the following location:
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/foksyfeyer/gizmo-project/
I have also uploaded an md5sum for the dotpet. Being on dialup it is not convenient for myself to redownload the dotpet and check it. So, I'd be grateful if someone with broadband would download and check the md5sum for correctness for me. Here's hoping it uploaded without error on first try.
Remember, this one has been tested as good for use on the official Puppy 4.00 Dingo and Puppy 2.17.1
May not work on 3.xx because of a different libstdc library, but I haven't myself checked that out one way or the other.
[easy enough to produce a <10 Mbyte dotpet for Puppy 3.xx if required though - assuming this one doesn't work with that version - I don't have 3.xx on this machine to test it]
