VirtualBox 1.6.6/2.1.2 Guest Additions for PUP4

This package provides several useful features for Puppy Linux 4.0 as a guest os in VirtualBox. It has been tested on

Code: Select all

  Host: VirtualBox 1.6.6 and 2.1.2 (Ubuntu 8.04)
  Guest: PuppyLinux 4.0 with kernel 2.6.21,
         PuppyLinux 4.1.1 with kernel 2.6.25.
If you want to try this package on other versions, make sure to take a snapshot first. The installation is same as ordinary dotpet packages. It will take effect after restarting X server.

Features:
  • Use shared folders on host machine. (Usage: mount -t vboxsf <share> <mountpoint>);
  • Mouse can move in and out the vbox window freely;
  • Synchronize time with host.
  • Auto-resize guest display
  • Clipboard sharing.
In previous version (v1.6.0), screen auto-resize and clipboard sharing didn't work because of the buggy VBoxClient. Fortunately, this problem has been fixed since 1.6.2. However, since JWM is unaware of XRandR, the task panel won't change its size and position after resizing the screen, so you need to restart X server manually to make everything in right place. NOP 4.0 users don't need to worry about this, as XFCE supports RandR fairly well.

Testing this out, but not having much luck.
Using Puppy 4, with K4.6.21.7 with Virtual Box 1.5.2 Under Vista.

Package installs, i select the res. I restart the X server, I get a black screen.
I have to then rerun the xorgwizard to select xvesa to get a useable X display back.

I will be looking into it more tonight. I may be doing somthing fundamentally wrong.

Ok if u r using puppy 4 inside virtualbox with windows as host, and then trying to run virtual box again with puppy as guest it will crash.....

I know ive just been trying to remaster puppy 4 with vbox installed....and dosbox.....dosbox caused an eror logging back outt o the windows host....and asked me to send the error to virtualbox ...i didnt as i didnt think i really should have been trying to run a virtual computer inside a virtual computer...

also will let you know on new thread if my remaster works..... thanx

Same problem here (with XP). I understand it's a VBox problem.
I'm using XVesa (up to 1024x768).

Sorry, i forgot mention in the first post that this guest addition package is for vbox 1.6.0. If you can't login to X, remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart xwin.

I should of Guessed that from the Version #'s in the package. :)

Success - virtualbox 1.6.0 and the package works.

Took me longer to track down/remove the old virtualbox and install the newer one. (why couldent the installer do that automatically.. duh..) then it did to get it working.

So A++ on the job.

Now to step 2 - How to use virtualbox to remaster a Puppy ISO.

Thanks for the help.

I could not say anything more to express my thank to you. Man, you are the best. I've been using vbox for a while and puppy is the best distro so far for virtual machine. It is however quite difficult to install the additions. I tried many times but failed. This made the job so easy, just a few clicks and now I have fullscreen (1280x800), mouse sync and folder share. Can you tell me how to do this in case I can build my own for the next version of vbox? Again many thanks to you.

Works really great!
Just like live4nothing I would appreciate if you could provide a 'how to' to the community. I think it won't take a long time before the next version of vbox will be released. Then it would be great if i can compile the guest additions myself.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments.

I took some notes when i made the pet package, but unfortunately I didn't save it because of a software flaw (i am looking at you, tiddlywiki) :x. I will make a new vbox guest additions package and write a how-to next time when the new vbox is out.

Ya, they just upgraded to 1.6.6 yesterday. Crazy.

2.0.0 is a major release though. It has some new features like 64bit VMs, but It isn't compatible with old snapshots anymore, which is really a downside to me. Remember to shutdown the OSs in VBox before upgrading to the new version.

v 2.0.4
