Lin Win Frugal install Puppy 4.00, Kernel 2.6.21.7, Only other things installed are a Java pet and the Madwifi pet. Acer 5620 Laptop, Pentium Dualcore 1.86 GHz, 3 GB RAM. Very happy my first experience with Puppy and with Linux. Gtkam doesn't work with my HP Photosmart 715 even though it's listed. It isn't even seen as a drive in Pmount. Seamonkey crashes while trying to upload a small jpeg to Photobucket. When I select reboot computer from the menu on the restart the laptop hangs during post. This doesn't happen on the fresh install. Too many calculators. Overall I'm very happy with the experience, thanks for your efforts.

Puppy is lean and mean, I love it.

Edit: I'm actually triplebooting Vista/XP and Puppy. Light blue Function keys don't work with Puppy, work in XP/Vista. Not a dealbreaker, but it'd be nice if they functioned. I downloaded something with Petget and it wouldn't uninstall, I believe it was the Java package. Jar files/packages don't open with Java, have to manually set the run action.

In my stumbling I've found that there is libiconv and the kernel iconv option. Some of the big app releases seem to shy away from the libiconv in favor of using the the kernel system. There are many perils in using libiconv. A couple builds can be fixed by using the -noiconv option (or something like that). Just not building it is probably the bet for anyone.

This starts off working then stops working. You click and nothing happens. puppy 4.00 on usb and hard disk install.I don't use it, but tried it to see if it works.

Lin Win Frugal install Puppy 4.00, Kernel 2.6.21.7. Hotpup Drive mount won't give me write privileges to harddrives other then the system drive. I have to mount the drive with Pmount. Kind of awkward, as I'm setting up an office PC for my somewhat computer illiterate girlfriend. Manually having to mount the drives sucks.

If I remember well, advice has been given to use pfind or to install the latest Dingo version (now at 407)
The 400 has a problem and I think it will not be corrected for this version.

I try it and let you know how it went. Everything else is working so well I don't want to mess it up. But I've backed up my Pupsave and will give it a go.

Update: I tried out 4.1 Alpha7, fixed the problem. Also fixed a problem I had with choosing reboot from the menu. Unfortunately wifi and ethernet don't work now. I posted the details on Barry's blog.

[BUG report]
after setting up a connection with pppoe_gui,
/etc/resolv.conf becomes a symlink to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf, itself a symlink to /etc/resolv.conf
thus it becomes impossible to connect to internet

Lately I've been getting this error message, Basically I can retrieve files but I can't save new files to the hard drive any ideas how to fix this so I can save files again? Without formatting the drive??
running live on puppy 4.0
The other hard drives mount ok.
Just my new one won't.

I dson't know whether this is a bug, but I'm getting lockups when I've got about 155 MB of RAM in use and two or three apps running (such as SeaMonkey and Osmo). Nothing will move, not even the mouse, and the caps key won't work. The only cure is to turn the computer off and start again.

There's a lot to like about Dingo though, the applications at last have a consistent look due to the GTK2 toolkit and it's possible to use the latest versions of apps such as Firefox 3.0.4.

Do you use a swap file or swap partition?
If not create one.

That could be caused by faulty ram.

Now if you have 1GB of ram you don't need one, but as you didn't tell the most logical advice is to create a swap, as you specified the the PC did come virtually at a stop, which is a symptom when real ram is almost all used.

But you're free to do what you want.
Maybe look also at th tip of possible faulty ram.

Beem and disciple, thanks for the replies.

I have only 256 MB of RAM, my computer's a Compaq Pentium III Coppermine with 20GB of hard drive space. In short, it's getting on a bit now.

I've tried using memtest but I can't decipher the output. Are there any other utilities which would enable me to examine the condition of my ramsticks?
