Subject description: installation problems

I have been using 3.01 since it was published. I installed it to an IDE CF card and it worked perfectly.

I tried upgrading and then tried a clean install of 3.99 yesterday. It would not install on my machine. I tried everything I could think of and basically nothing happened. It would hang at various stages. Requesting superfloppy install was just ignored. I tried beta1 with the same result, or non-result.

I tried to upgrade by running the live CD on that machine and it looked like it worked, but it just scrambled my setups on 3.01 and left me there, no upgrade.

I tried installing to sda1 but no boot loader install was offered, and I don't know how to do that from scratch. Besides, I prefer to use superfloppy installs.

As a final check I booted the 3.01 CD and shizaaaam, installed instantly in superfloppy mode, everything working perfectly.

I don't know how to overcome this, but I would like to move to Dingo when it goes gold.

any wisdom or alternatives?

amd athlon, 1gb ram, 1gb CF on ide bus.

The problem is that you are providing no information to go on. "basically nothing happened" is not at all helpful.

I take it that you used the Universal Installer, and chose to install to ide cf card. You need to explain clearly each step and how far you got, and what actually happened when it went wrong.

It may be helpful to start the Universal Installer from a terminal, as it may output something useful. Open a terminal and run:

# puppyinstaller

Here is some follow up information.

I still can't install 3.99 to the A-data 1GB CF card.
I can install FreeDOS to the A-data card, and it boots and runs.
I can install 3.99 to a 1GB usb flash drive.

The card is on the IDE bus via an adapter. The box sees it as a hard disk.

I have zero-filled the card with Boot and Nuke to try clean installs. I have booted FreeDOS from CD and used fdisk to format the disk. I have formatted it FAT 16, Ext2, and Ext3 with both gparted and fdisk. But 3.99 still will not install to the disk. The script thinks it's working even after puppyinstaller flags an error.

The installer thinks the drive is not formatted, but as you can see in the pics below I can mount and save files on the drive that puppyinstaller can't access.

Below are pics of the stages I've tried and the results I've gotten, or not.

I get the impression that there's something goofy with that card, but I did have 3.01 on about half of it for quite a while.

Any suggestions for getting this card to behave, short of hitting it with my framing hammer, would be appreciated.
