Dingo Beta 2 on my Asus Eeepc running from USB Flash Drive - the package manager is too big for the diminutive screen

Very slow but successful download from Iblio - not sure why . . .
it is usually faster

Booted up with pfix=ram, created a universal install to USB flash drive
and booted up from EeePc
The Universal install does not clean off the save file
(noticed this in the beta 1) - I think that is probably a good thing
but it does give the impression that everything will go . . .

So I was expecting a clean boot -
in fact it upgraded the pupeee 3.01 based puplet
- but this can be bypassed with "puppy pfix=ram" at boot

There seems to be no support for the EeePc wireless module?

During the upgrade, missing dependencies were noted in red and
instructions to make a note. These I assume can then be added from the package manager?

If you are testing beta 1 - move to testing Beta 2
A lot of work has clearly gone on to improve the issues reported.

How did you get on?

i have clean frugal install of puppy 4 beta 2 today without any problem i tried fatdog.sfs but it did not work.

i have also upgraded from puppy 3.96 (pup save 2fs) file to puppy 4 beta 2
without any problem and all my previously added applications are working
the only exception is MUT which did not work.

just successfully upgraded from 3.98 to 3.99 (Dingo Beta 2)
and noticed my xfce themes can be loaded
as a GTK theme . . .
The Grey default theme is excellent.
We really have turned the corner in look and feel
without compromising the geek reliability

The stopwatch (pwatch) I set to 30 seconds and it crashed
at 24 secs - more testing needed on that as it displays OK now
and is a great feature for athletic Pups

Oh before I forget . . .
during the Universal install
there is a point where it asks if you wish
to load everything into ram (if you have less then 256 ram)
The way stated creates an almost incomprehensible choice .
I read it several times
apply what little logic I have left
and am still not sure if I have applied the right setting . . .
(the English could be simplified)

The .pet/dotpet system is very well implemented
and has Barry mentioned a new sfs page on his web site?
- the SFS is very useful in Puppy

Hi all, well I'm a happy camper anyway!
The trouble I was having with USB booting has disappeared

*Partitioned my USB flash drive with QParted to FAT 16
*Set Boot flag
*Did a fresh install using the Universal installer
*Booted and ran off USB flash, no problems at all

Don't know if it's been spotted before, and it's fairly minor? the "Home" icon in the top LH corner looks to be out of focus.

Exactly the same as with Puppies 3.98, 3.97.

Puppy 3.96, Kernel 2.6.23.12, still works just fine.
I use it daily in "revenue service", mostly just SeaMonkey.

Will we have to wait for Puppy 4.1
to get a newer kernel than Puppies 3.97-9?
I assume that's the pure and simple fix here.

That fuzzy home icon is there for ages and yet nobody complained (It's the only icon that seriously needs a replacement)
Maybe it's intentional...that warm and FUZZY feeling...there's no place like /home

A strange and very irreproducible 'feature' has emerged in the most recent Dingos. Immediately after booting into XVESA (I use this mostly - but it also happens in Xorg), either from liveCD or FULL install (don't do FRUGAL nor USB), during general setting up eg resolution adjustment, inserting IP addresses, w.h.y., the desktop background will disappear. The menu list is still present and active, sometimes the right-click menu may appear. Sometimes an X-reset works momentarily, but from thence onwards the fate is sealed - lock up. An hard reboot always clears the fault. If it's going to recur this will happen soon after booting, otherwise the entire distro remains stable all day. I have confirmed that this is NOT HW dependent (very important to stress this, as I've done the memory tests, etc.), it does not occur with earlier releases, but is almost impossible to predict or reproduce. Reading between the lines of many reports here, I am bound to wonder whether this is the phenomenon being observed by other folk and seems similar to an event reported for Pupeez a couple of days ago.
Sorry, no idea about the origin, but it is very real when it happens.

Update: Two more (unrelated?) lock-ups experienced - both associate with the accursed SeaMortuary. First occurred with three windows open and rescued with an X-reset. Second occurred with a requested pop-up - locked solid, only a hard reboot worked. Plenty of main & vid memory available. The sooner we can get Opera, the better!

Further testing: Nope sorry, this one is unusable. A distro without a working browser is a liability. This browser constantly breaks under all sorts of situations, all sorts of HW.

Thanks for improvements, now my laptop runs in native resolution (1280x800) in VESA mode. Unfortunately, there's a few bugs:
* after saving session to partition (frugal mode), it doesn't get loaded after next reboot;
* in package manager there are no icons in package list, they appear after selecting another package repository;
* tap-click on touchpad works in VESA mode, but not in XORG by default;
* startup-notification development libraries are missing in devx_399.sfs;

I think too many icons on the desktop ? Maybe html, calc, draw, not so much used ?
Network should be automatically set with dhcp.
Set default firewall per default (see beta1 bugs proposition).

I'm not sure why icon switcher doesn't automatically restart the pinboard and jwm. Putting at the end of icon_switcher makes the change instantly and avoids having to restart X.

It's working fine for me with a new pup_save, not a upgrade. The upgrade process probably un-did some of the setups. Try removing the fatdog.sfs file using the BootManager and reboot. Install the fatdog.sfs file using the BootManager, then reboot again. Please report any problems with fatdog here:

Beta2 is working well for me. Pupget looks like a huge step in the right direction. Support for a community repository would be a great addition. Still planning on 2.6.25.x for final?

According to the readme on ibiblio devx_399.sfs is identical to devx_398.sfs. Those who have 398 can just copy/rename it.

I had better luck moving from 3.01 to 4 beta2 than from 4 beta1 to beta2.

Upgrade from 3.01 succeeded after reporting several dozen missing dependencies. Despite this, everything appears to work.

Issues noted:
- Desktop completely reset to stock beta 2. No trace of 3.01 customization.
- Time zone reset to Perth. Time remained correct.
- Pmount engine selection reset to default.

No other problems noted so far. Very nice work Barry. Puppy 4 beats the last dozen distros I've tried out. Congratulations!

Two bugs found in Beta1 are gone: virtual desktop number gets changed, mhWaveEdit seems to work pretty well & fast with WAVs and MP3s (haven't tried OGGs yet, there's none on this computer). Still, HotPup needs an X-restart to display its stuff.

Oddly, no trace ever of any of the problems pointed out by Sage (up to now at least): while writing this in one tab, SeaMonkey has two more tabs with two different videos from YouTube streaming simultaneously -- sure, a mess with the audio, but all works fine switching from a tab to another.

Everything is very prompt, responsive and pleasant -- just changed colours with MTPaint to the /home icon, I like it red-roofed.

Up to now when testing alpha and beta I copied the old pup_save and changed the name the reflect the new version.
This has always worked and I could continue to work with previous installed programs and settings.

Yesterday for the sake of the Gnome 2.2 sfs (in beta 1) I followed the instructions and I had to start afresh to create a new pup_save.

Well, this didn't work, I got at shutdown the message 'puppy not saved' (or something the like) and I didn't get the prompt indeed for the save.
Also I can't setup my internet connection nor through the network wizard, nor through pwireless. I get a apipa IP.

I saw that the ieee80211_crypt_wep was missing and I loaded it from zdrv.
But still no joy to setup the internet connection.

This is a real disappointment for me.

My WiFi card is a ipw2100. The module loads correctly.
The ...crypt and ....crypt_wep are loaded as well.

Hope that a cure can be found.

bcm43xx and r8180 wireless also have problems too.
