Freecell
Freecell
I'd like to have freecell in my Puppy 4.0Beta. The 3.0Beta Firefox that comes with it won't install the Firefox version, and I can't seem to install the older .pup version that's available. I'm in danger of having my spare moments turn productive. Can anyone help?

it has tons of card games, very small and and once its installed you can start them via your tools Menu:)
Or you could just install Freecell from here, But the Firefox addon is better

Yes, I have used that one for some time with earlier versions of Puppy, but it's not compatible with the Firefox 3.0 Beta that comes with Puppy 4.0 Beta. The download says, "for older versions of Firefox."
I'll try the .pet. Thanks for your quick response.

Still no Freecell
The world is against me; all this proves it. Not only is Firefox 3.0Beta not compatible with the freecell add-on, but also the .pet kindly pointed out by Ttuuxx seems to install, puts a start menu item in, but then fails utterly to appear. I think I'm missing a .dll, or something.

Freecell-solved!
Thanks to Ttuuxxx and Amigo, both of whom are now mentioned in my will, I am happily playing Freecell through Ace of Penguins, and will continue to do so indefinitely.

1- Would the Firefox addon work on the Seamonkey 1.1.8 that comes with Dingo?
2- In response to Davec51, who wrote:

You responded:

I'm having the exact same problem. My only clue is that Freecell.exe appears in /initrd/mnt/dev_save/WINDOWS/System32/. Given the /WINDOWS/... Does this imply that wine would be required? (If so, I'm not interested in the wine overhead.)
3- Also I would appreciate your comments on the file-size overhead of the 'game packages' mentioned, as I am only interested in Freecell and want to keep my Dingo as lean as possible.
Thank you.
rodrigt,
have you seen Zigbert's list of small games for pup4?

Yes but only skimmed through the messages and wasn't sure of what to do. Being interested only in Freecell, which of XFreecell or QFreecell(?) are closest to the Windows version?muggins wrote:rodrigt,

Also, how do I uninstall the non-working Freecell I have? (In the Menu it appears under Fun and most of the files appear in /initrd/mnt/dev_save/WINDOWS/System32/.) Thanks again for all your guidance!
Are you trying to uninstall the firefox extension mentioned by ttuuxxx, or the freecell .pet. If the latter you should be able to uninstall any .pet via the package manager:
Menu->Setup->Puppy Package Manager
If the firefox extension, uninstall via the firefox addon manager.
But neither should have installed files into /initrd/mnt/dev_save/WINDOWS/System32. I don't know how this occurred. Also, neither should require any .dlls to run.
As to which is most like windows freecell, it's been years since I ever used it. Koolie mentions here that he reckons the tcl based one is the closest.
To install koolie's pup, and have it work, you would need to also install these:
dotpuphandler-0.0.4-2.pet
tcl-8.5a4nothreads.pet
tk-8.5a4nothreads.pet
To use the qfreecell .pet, you would need:
qt-3.3.8.pet
Menu->Setup->Puppy Package Manager
If the firefox extension, uninstall via the firefox addon manager.

Muggins,
Thanks again for your most generous guidance and I can only hope that my newbie inquiries/responses will also be helpful to other Windows renegades. (How to uninstall a Pet via PETget reminded me of when I first cursed Windows 3.1.... because nowhere did they explain how to 'highlight the desired text' - #@^%$* What was I supposed to do? Use a yellow marker on the screen? Duhh! )
Anyhow, upon rebooting the freecell .pet is now completely gone and all three of the above ("you would need to also install these") now show as "Installed" in PETget. (For other newbies, per Muggins' prior instructions, on each of the above links right-click/SaveLinkAs, e.g. save at /temp, invoke ROX-filer and click install - that does it.)
When I went to Koolie's link I couldn't get to where you where you recommend saveing/extracting at '/'... Any suggestions? (PS- It's past 2 AM and I'm fading... if my inquiry is insufficient I'll come back tomorrow.)
PS- Thanks to your help my wife has also abandoned Windows for Internet browsing and will be delighted with getting Freecell up and running.
I don't understand where you're having difficulty with Koolie's .pup. Just click Freecell.pup, and it will give you the option of Save it to disk.
After download, go to the download location with RoxFiler, and click the Freecell.pup to install.

I only realised from all this that I dont have Freecell installed on Puppy4. Haven't had time to play games lately.
I put some of the above together and made a .pet for Puppy4.
Problem is (for uploading here) that it is 1.1MB.
I have tried to shrink it using various archive types, but can't.
If anyone can tell me howto shrink a .pet I will post it here.
If not I will upload it somewhere.

To me
If you delete that you wont be able to play Freecell on Windows,
and if you delete that directory you wont be able to do anything in Windows.
/initrd/mnt/dev_save is the Windows C: drive.
To me
suggests that you have a Windows installation on your HDD, and that is what is being found here./initrd/mnt/dev_save/WINDOWS/System32/

@muggins,
It is the good 1.1 version, and yes, it does include those.
On second thoughts, it is probably not a good idea to package it all up together. I just thought it would make it easier for people to install 1 pkg instead of 4.
And if someone installs it on a Puppy version that already has those, and subsequently uninstalls it, then Firefox (Bon Echo) and some other things will stop working.
Then some people would start saying that Puppy is almost as bad as Windows.
I'll keep it available in case someone wants it.
The good version is here

Muggins - Thanks, I wast just too sleepy at that time and today Koolie's Freecell PET installed easily. (Reputed to be the 'most like Windows' Freecell.)
Then...
Then...
Koolie, Thank you for creating a PET that installed and worked perfectly! Being a 'Windows renegade / new Dingo lover' I still don't know how to determine how much 'weight' my Dingo may be gaining, please comment on how much extra RAM your Freecell PET requires. (FYI, the RAM on my two PCs is 1GB and 2 GB, my old Vaio Laptop has 512 MB.) - Thanks.koolie wrote:I only realised from all this that I dont have Freecell installed on Puppy4. @rodrigt
Negligible ram usage.
You dont need this .pet now you have Freecell working from the dotpup. It is the same version.
If you decide, sometime, to install the .pet I mentioned in my last post, and find it doesnt run (in some other Puppy version), then grab the 2 library files mugins mentioned.
That is all my big dotpet is, just those 3 files.
Cheers.
