Think about it Barry.
I have no idea what's got into you, I also consider the following (which you sent to me privately), to be offensive and more aggravation than I need.

You take no security about this site making Barry look like a damn FOOL.
Shit or get off the NET!
So you have your first formal warning along with a one week ban so you can cool off, get back on you meds or whatever it is you need.

For the record the forum has never been compromised as such ... Sure, it crashed, and at times people have felt that moderators have been heavy handed... And we deal with heavy daily spam activity, but I have always done my best to protect the site.

Even if you where miss-informed your recent posts are abusive.

"bad links"

#17 Post by raffy »

This is quite funny - I found out this morning that the "bad URL" actually is about the old puppylinux.com download page. For simplicity, more recent downloads at puppylinux.org are pointed to this download page, but the URL for this page has been changed.

Many people have used this URL, even for donations, so I guess it will be good to keep it. Attached is a simple script to redirect it to the new page.

I was wondering what everyone was talking about, because the site looked the same to me. I suspect I must have been loading it from cache, because today it is different and all is revealed

My only comment is that the new front page looks more "anonymous". I liked the previous site's intro information (which showed you that you were at puppy's official page), and I liked seeing puppy's (real) face. No doubt all of the computer boffins aren't sooky over a chihuahua, so I'm probably alone there  . Otherwise, everything seems laid out more clearly than before and it looks good.

(The site puppylinux-foundation.com linked to seems strange to me - it says the domain may be for sale, and the links don't seem to be for "Puppy linux things"?).

Yeah, my "Puppy web" page needs a major upgrade. There are many more Puppy sites since that page was created.

I'll get a proper blog installed soon, then invite feedback on what links should or should not be on that page. And other suggestions will be welcome for imroving puppylinux.com. I have already got some help with improving the CSS and Javascript, and will also be looking at that.

Barry, just a quick note.

You might consider putting a redirect at
http://www.puppylinux.com/news.htm
on your new site to somewhere.

The home page in seamonkey for all my live cds point there for developer news and it's a dead link now.

blog displays error

#24 Post by raffy »

Currently, "Internal Server Error" is displayed in Barry's blog. Here is HostGator's advice in the peer forum:
From support tickets I have looked at, most of the Internal Server Errors are from clients having world writable files, invalid entries in their htaccess files, or have over 25 running/hanging PHP processes.
..
.. you should have the "HG Extras" feature located at the bottom of CPanel on the x or x2 theme. Most of the time it should track where your Internal Server Error is coming from.

It should be ok now. I was working on it today, messing around with .htaccess for ages, finally got it right.

The css has a hardcoded pixel width for the main content area. This means it will not view properly with less than 900ish pixels wide. On the plus side the menu should still be usable and it saves valuable screen space.

The blog is a fun new toy and I'm changing things all the time, so don't be surprised when it looks different one day, then different again the next!
Yes, I need to fix that problem with the icons overlapping. I was thinking, I don't want to narrow the blog itself, but if there was some way to have some logic to either move the icons somewhere else or not display them if the window is too narrow -- I think css can have if-else type programming, will have to find out more (I'm new to css).

home

Probably one icon for Home should do it - it can be your Avatar with URL to puppylinux.com index, and accompanying title saying something like "Go to PuppyLinux.com".

If you added padding-left: 48px; to the div#all, that would keep things from moving too far left. It would also keep things 48 pixels further right all the time though.

I don't remember CSS having if-else, but I haven't used it for a long time either. If not, you could do it through JavaScript (yech, I hate resorting to JS).

Maybe you could set it up so the main blog is "above" the icons and has a white background behind its guts, so that as the window narrows it just covers up the buttons.

EDIT: Or do as raffy suggests, or maybe shrink the buttons and put them up on the top right.

Another possible solution is to specify the larger measurements using percentages as units. Because you have fixed widths there is a lot of wasted space on larger screens.
For messing around with css I use firefox with the firebug extension. You can use this to edit the css and see the results instantly.
