I want to remaster puppy for fast boot with limited applications.
I do not want it to use SWAP till RAM (512MB) gets full.


Which one should I use, 2.14 or 3.01 ? Or any other ? Or 2.17 (I shall have to download that).

I'm currently in the process of remastering 3.01 but it would be interesting to see feedback on your question in case 2.xx versions are more suitable for such an environment.

IMHO, Puppy 2.17.1 is the most stable version with everything working including gxine (also fullscreen) - atleast on all my machines. I always prefer remastering on this version.

But there are additional features and updated versions in the 3 series.

I have some clear objectives-

1) Run on laptop using minimum power, use dynamic frequency scaling if supported.
2) Fast boot from USB flash.
3) No use of hard disk (but provision to mount can be considered).
4) No auto save to extend Flash life.
5) A better file manager. Something like nautilus. ROX does not appeal to me.
6) A good multimedia player supporting most formats. Should play mp3 / VCD / DVD. GXINE ?
7) Firefox / Iceweasel webbrowser. cookies and temp files on RAM.
A good pdf viewer (the one in 2.14 did not open some).
9) torrent client /download manager.
10) A decent text editor that can open odf/doc. say abiword
11) Spreadsheet - gnumeric /
12) power-point viewer.
13) Image viewer/ editor (light one will do)
14) Camera detection and download (the standardized ones)

I am still making the list. Obviously hardware detection has to be good.

Printing ? Not essential.

The laptop shall have other big OS installed anyway. So I do not need too many programs, just the basic stuff.

CPU monitor , network analyzer, memory monitor, battery level monitor etc. shall bee needed.

RAMs are cheap, 1 GB will not cost the earth. Should preferably work well on 512 MB.

Any suggestions ?

I don't know if you have tried TEENpup 2008? I know it's a big iso?
It should be able to do all your asking, maybe it will at least let you know how fast Apps open on your laptop and help you with answering questions on what you'd want in your remaster.

TEENPup is now like a full-fledged distro. A different concept.

My idea is to learn Linux, start by remastering. My idea is to have a ELTIPUP, a Puppy for laptops. Not Hard disk installation, but CD/DVD or USB Flash.
Fast boot, running from RAM, long battery life, avoid HDD use. And long Flash life.
