Hi guys I dropped 302 and 5.0
and so my plate is clear
I'm on my way out but quickly I'll explain what I need

which puppy version should it be based on
4.0 4.1 4.12
4.12 seems to have a few issues

Gnome Sword or kde bibletime ?

VLC or Gxine

plus which applications would you like to see

I'll work on ttuuxxx tv tomorrow

It will be icewm as the window manager and Firefox 3 series that I'll optimize for puppy.

ttuuxxx,

Glad that you're focusing on this update, however, I hope that you will continue on 5 and help on 4.2.

My preference is a full KDE and Bibletime with the ability to switch between KDE and icewm. Most computers today can easily handle the KDE environment, even my 5-year old clunker.

Hello ttuuxxx,Let me echo what JIm posted previously.your counsel ,to me and various users on this forum have been a great help in understanding the Puppy operating system helping new users find their way around.Some of it answered my questions and some of it left me with more questions. but I submit this is all part of the learning curve..

I guess I would ask "Exactly what IS a "operating system" ? To me it is simply a base foundation where upon a user adds a few applications that allows him/her to work in areas that are of need or interest to each user specifically.Once this happens ,I am lost in trying to figure out anything else it should do.Each user has their own likes or dislikes of any Puppy Distro but while auditing many of the Puplets various users have submitted I have to say,some are very clever but on the whole,all are still somewhat incomplete because whatever problem a user encounters in one Puplet,more than likely,they will have the same
problems in another Puplet.This to me is the crux of where you gurus should make your additions (education and applications),if of course you have the interest and desire. Then I say ,let the user modify,add,delete whatever they so choose.Then if they can post up a Puplet that suits others,the I say this is fine business.
I suppose in the end I would have to make this statement and it goes something like this "Give a man fish and he can feed his family for a day,but TEACH a man to fish,and he can feed his family indefinitely" Thanks,bill

AMEN regarding thanks for all you give, ttuxxx. (5?? I don't even know about "5" - i assume it's Puppy 5.)

Bill - yes about teaching a man to fish...BUT there are a lot of frustrated people who want something better than Windoze, yet simply don't have time to learn how to configure everything. "Just give me something that works out-of-the-box!!!" I guess that means that ideally, we should have several distros/puplets available that are drop-in Windoze replacements, with appropriate software prepackaged, (As an example, i just configured OpenOffice for a friend so that everything automatically saves in MS formats -- before i did that, the program was useless to his family. His girls couldn't take their work to school to work on or print b/c they didn't know enough about saving with the correct extensions.) Yeah, this is my soapbox with Linux distros -- some HAVE to be quite intuitive to the MS crowd or they feel forced to always stick with a frustrating OS from Redmond.

Ttuuxxx--i prefer BibleTime but that's just me -- it seems easier to reference to the Strong's lexicons. Which causes less headaches for you to include? TtuxxTV is great - but i don't use it (wish i could get PBS on the computer, i don't use television). For the rest of you proposed choices -- i'd stick first with rock-solid reliability and secondly with user-friendliness. Which version to base it on? I'm not sure of all the differences, but i thought 4.1 was better than 4.0. Oh -- does Gxine include all the codecs like VLC? Lastly, don't kill yourself and your family time!!

Hello Subito Piano,Thanks for your post.Personally I feel there is already an operating system as good as M$ and it is Puppy. The main difference I see is simply what you spoke of considering how the young ladies could have portability of files to a system that has held a mortal lock on all computers for a long time.What I am suggesting is nothing more than a few apps that can convert a rpm2pet or deb2pet etc. etc for ease of installing apps that a new user might require.I can't envision a software that can be all things to all people but these routines could help a new user become more empowered to learn new things.Even M$ has a learning curve.I would believe this would simply be a starting point for a new user,the rest would be entirely up to them.Oh ! and by the way,your two cents is as of equal value as anyones .

VLC should be fine, but I'd heard that the Windows version could be illegal in the US (dvd css thing?). I don't think libdvdcss2 is bundled in the Linux version...

I haven't tried 4.12 yet just 4.1 Gxine in 4.1 is really buggy is it the same in 4.12? I was thinking of keeping it as a backup, But if its buggy its out-of-here. like if you leave a space at the end of a url stream by accident, it freezes then you have to kill it, but it stays running so then you have to run Pprocess and manually kill it
try this link and include a space at the end of the url before hitting enter for 4.12 users.

I also need urls or websites, I can manually find them for the online streams for ttuuxxx TV, I have a few new ones. But more the better I guess

I tracked down the problem with the links for living waters. I did tell Ttuuxx about it but I guess he has not had time to change his links yet.

He is missing a folder section /tpp/ in the web address.

Hi as soon as 4.2 puppy linux is stable, I'll be building a new release, My main focus at the moment is to have a stable base, Plus i've been building newer packages for it in the background, so it shouldn't be long, Thanks tom4jesus for providing the correct link, Sometimes my files get moved and links get broken. I'll have to updated soon.

Please consider including both Bibletime and Bible-desktop in your new release. I find that they complement each other very well since both have strengths.

Meanwhile, please make a .pet of the latest Bible-desktop http://www.crosswire.org/bibledesktop/download.html. The current version is 1.6 and the only available .pet is version 1.08. I have been unsuccessful with my tries at creating a .pet.

Thanks for the response
I'm sorry but I don't make pets for bible related resources. That way I try to keep the interest related to "Living Water" and "ChurchPup". It makes the 2 releases a larger resource and doesn't become part of the norm. That way we keep united under 2 threads. Also Bibletime and Bible-desktop well one is Kde and one is java, wow thats a tall order, I'm planning on building a Bibletime release with other kde extras, I could have 2 versions a small version and a large version with java, but what benefits does Bible-desktop have over Bibletime? I usually hear it the other way that Bibletime is way better than Bible-desktop. Bible-desktop will add about 40MB+ including the latest Java, so I would have to justify the extra somehow.
