Starting Up "Living Water 3.01"

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Hello People

Well due to the overwhelming support and great reviews from you all. I'm in the initial planning stages of "Living Water 3.01"
Basically the previous version was 2.17 and had a few minor problems which 3.01 doesn't have. But this does mean that the size will be a bit larger 10-20MB

I would like to know if any of the programs could go, Like InkscapeLite do we need it or can we just have gimpshop. Sorry no gimp its 3 times larger:)
next As I look at puppy's menu there are tons of software I never personally use and think I might remove a lot of it.

Do anyone have any small bibles or church related programs you might want to see in this release.?

Does anyone have any other tv station streams you might like to see in ttuuxxTV ?

Anything you would like to see change?

Please feel free to tell me what you think

I also would like to know which programs you use on daily basis and which extra addons you had to install to make you operating system work eg wireless tools.

Thanks for everything

Sorry, still haven't even tried Living Water :)
There is not much in Puppy that is big enough to be worth removing. Inkscape is a vector graphics editor, gimpshop a bitmap editor, so they do completely different things. I suspect less than 1 in 10 people would ever want to use inkscape, but it probably isn't very big by the time it's compressed in the sfs.

Personally, I think you should wait until some of the problems get ironed out in the 3.x series, particularly all the printing problems.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

The thing about replacing inkscape with gimpshop and leaving mt paint is.
Mt paint is extremely quick as a image viewer and plus it does a good quick job at resizing images, Plus is does render some xpm images.
InkLite well as we both know is vector and really only used by a select few.
Gimpshop is way better with images but its for the more advanced user its also 1/3 of the size of the latest Gimp.

The reason why we are talking about removing/adding these is basically "Living water" Is for older pc and the smaller the package the better.
If I shave 1MB x15 it does make a difference, Thats why my first release was so small even with Java included :) 139MB Opera, java, flash. and 145mb with firefox, flash, java (51MB firefox pet package I made) plus they had slew of other programs. This time around I'm starting with a larger base and need to trim, so it runs fast on older pc's .

With printer support on 3 or 4 series, well I'm one of two leaders for the 3 series and Can tell you that its almost impossible to use all printers with Linux in general, because printer manufactures have been reluctant to provide suitable drivers for Linux they tend to lean towards windows and Apple. In the past we've found other drivers from other Linux distros and adapt them. But for total support I don't think it will happen, On the other hand Printer manufactures have been increasing the amount of drivers that they release for Linux :) Canon is one. When I shop for a printer the very first thing I do is research. First I read the spec's and prices and make a list of models. Then I go to the manufactures website and look to see if they have Linux drivers for it, If they do then I buy the printer, If not then I look at the next one on the list.

Also puppy 3.02 is still an alpha and we've been working hard on it and basically has some issues and I wouldn't use it yet as a base and it might be some time before its viable.

Hope that helps :)
If you know of any updates that should be in this release please stae which ones
I will update pfind, pburn, Gnumeric,

OK, just as long as you realize that gimpshop doesn't replace inkscape :)

I am not talking about printer support in Puppy 3.x
I am talking about the problems people have had that they shouldn't have had, because things are broken. Most of the problems are with network printing, but I don't think all of them are...

Well how about i'll look around first and see if any fixes are out there, I used to do that for the "Fire Hydrant" series I have, My 3.0 version was basically the 3.01 before it was released with all the updates/fixes that I could find.

I shaved off 78 programs with fat free 3.01 and that reduced the iso 35MB of pets compressed =104MB when un compressed and installed thats a little of the sfs file system magic
that you dont see under the hood of puppy just looking at the iso size alone

and when you type free at console to verify your free memory
after puppy is loaded and running using different versions then you see why one is really faster than another on older machines that are RAM limited there is a 3 to one ratio

iso 50MB larger =150MB more ram needed plus the larger loop time

hey ttuuxxx go for the 3.01 version
lite or standard will be well received

Oh yeah - I think the other main thing giving people trouble in 3.x might have been Gxine...

I'm curious as to why you don't use Dingo if you are aiming at lower spec machines?

The Main problem with Gxine was full screen, I managed to make a cure for that:) I made up a lite-weight icewm package, the main problem with Gxine was JWM. My lite pet package is 767.1 KB including one 188kb theme that I 90% made up. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=27358

The reason why I'm not going with dingo are:
- Still an alpha which means not suitable for everyday you and could also still get a complete over-haul of the internal workings which could render my release completely useless for future software installs.
- Series 4 has very large incompatibility issues with series 2+3, I've tested a lot of software and a good portion. So its like starting over from scratch. Plus a lot of drivers for series 3 for things like printers more then likely wouldn't work, But don't hold me on that one.
- At this point it isn't Slackware compatible, But others have mentioned its on a to do list. When personally I think we should get even more Slackware Compatible, such as most of the time things like icons are in different locations with Slackware installs with Gslapt and don't show up in the menus and you have to alter the .desktop file and/or move the icon and/or system link it.

I have a, well I guess wish to make regarding the next living waters. Has using Bibletime software been discussed before instead of using Bible desktop? I have used GnomeSword, Bible desktop and BibleTime and I really think BibleTime is the best linux Bible software out there IMHO. That and the newest Pidgin that supports google talk and I'd be a happy camper! (Well, that and if you would like to fly half way around the world and convince my printer that puppy is a good thing!) Thanks!!

Hi grouchyhermit

Take a look back through the ChurchPup forum threads to find the various discussions on Bible software. (Most recent thread here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=24463)

Living Water is a sort of offspring of the overall ChurchPup Project and so most of the background discussion took place over there. Hope that helps.
Cheers,

Love "Living Water" 2.17. Where can I download the latest beta version? I'm running it on my desktop which has an 8800 Nvidia card, and scrolling is addled on web pages. Thanks for all your efforts! :D

Thanks for that,:)

I'm presently working on 3.02 and a 3.01 retro Fire Hydrant minimal, Also planning and testing software for "Living Water 3.01" I do have the base ready and started applying applications, Plus I'm undecided if I'm going to build a completely new version of "ttuuxxx TV" or use the previous and maybe do a few channel updates. If I was to make a new version it would take a lot of time. Because I wanted to expand it for News/Entertainment/Sports/Music Videos etc and it would have a new base. Plus I have some Graphics I have to build. I do like this version of 3.01 retro I'm building. It actually might even be a better base then the 3.01 regular. I'm glad I have multiple Pc's so i can work on them all :)

Excellent. Can't wait! Is there something I can do for the graphics that you know of? Perhaps my card is "too much"? Anyway, keep up the good work! I'm all in for testing if you feel the need for a guinea pig!

P.S. As for tv stations, I wouldn't mind seeing the Shepherds Chapel with Pastor Arnold Murray included!

Hi I'll add that stream to the TV listings
Once I get a working stream. I tried to play it but the stream wasn't working.
Which site are you viewing it from? do you have a link,?
Plus any other's that work well would be great:) (church related at this point)

Now how come i never seem to get notifications?!?!?!?!?!

OK, now for my ramblings thoughts...

First -- nice work, ttuxxx!! You are doing a good thing. Of course, you have to figure out your target audience. Good for you that you are aiming for the low-end machines, i think that is all the spirit of Puppy AND plain old good stewardship -- of money and possessions, plus it's against this rampant consumerism of our age. (My own laptop is a P1, 165Mhz, 40 MB RAM -- maybe just to prove it can be done!!! Alas, i can't find any Puppy for it...sigh...) Anyway, please do trim, trim, trim.

A question regarding your target audience: are you aiming for Puppy enthusiasts OR for Windoze-trained people? Another way to say this is, should a newbie to be able to figure out Living Water instinctively or rather is LW something that a Linux enthusiast would demonstrate and train others to use? Do you want this to be a good "first Linux experience" for those not accustomed to Linux/Puppy? The path you choose to walk your Puppy depends an awful lot on how you answer that question. (Gee, i'm starting to wax philosophical....)

I know PrairieDog had put together a preliminary beta of ChurchPup lite with wine and e-sword pre-installed. THAT would be sweet -- but permission would be needed from e-sword's author before making it generally available. Maybe that would be the best solution; e-sword is roughly equivalent to BibleTime and GnomeSword. I LOVE my BibleTime but i'm sure there's no way to include it without all that K-stuff weighing everything down. If you decide to try adding e-sword, PrairieDog might be able to give you some pointers or give you a copy of that ChurchPup lite beta. I mean, yeah, you're sharp enough to figure it out for yourself but it might save you some time if you knew how others got it all to work correctly. Also, there are a few web pages on installing e-sword with wine; i know you need the correct version of wine and to install what -- a dll somewhere special. A good friend of mine in town got it to work -- i can get hold of him or find those pages for you if you want me to -- just let me know.

OK -- long post. First version was really good. I'll be interested in what you come up with next!!

Hello! Here's the link: http://shepherdschapel.com/index.cfm
It uses Real or Windows media player. so I don't know if it will work in Linux.

Somewhere i mentioned this, but here goes...

I contacted Rick Meyers about including e-sword in a release. He said no, that would violate the copyright, but suggested we make an installer like the Ubuntu CE folks did. Hmm..seems ChurchPup or LW could come with wine pre-installed and pre-configured to download e-sword (and maybe MS-TTF). Then a user could have a terrific piece of Bible Study software. (Yeah -- i'm thinking about trying to do thisover the summer -- HA!!)

By the way, is there a dotpet (or whatever they're called now) for automounting removable drives?

Hi, at this point in time, "Living water" Is a small church related operating system, If I was to include wine 13mb plus e-sword 18MB, OpenGL 1MB, the release would increase 32mb just for 1 application, I would seriously have to think about it. Then its the whole bringing Windows to Linux issue. Plus wine isn't always easy to use, well I did spend 5 minutes with it once, I might have to re-look at it:) I could have 2 versions, with it and without. Decisions, decisions, what to do???

@ttuuxxx: You could always have this as an add-on sfs package. Something like Grey is doing with NOP. Give additional SFS files so that folks who like plug in anything they want.
