How to have a graphical GRUB (Updated Package Available)
Hello
@ vellowax
I downloaded the package you attached above grub-0.97-patched1_ext4-p4.pet
just so i could take a look at what it contains.
I am sorry to say, but it does not support the GRUB gfxmenu,
judging by it's name, i would say it is just a patched version giving support for ext4 partitions.
So, no fancy boot screens with that fella i'm afraid,
but read the rest of this post, as i have found something that may be just what you need.
@ Roger Hunter
The link i provided in an earlier post to you,
explains how to check the inode size of your partitions.
Although where it suggests booting off the Puppy Live CD, if you can boot into one of the other Puppies you have installed
you could run the command from that (so long as the Macpup partition is NOT mounted) and check it.
Before you go doing any more reformatting of your partitions, please have a look at this: Legacy GRUB with support for ext4 partitions

For those who love grub4dos gfxmenu will work on it too...plus ext4 and 246 inodes
http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/gfxmenu.htm
note...needs 0.4.4 the latest version...
I assume building the menu will be the same and add the gfxmenu line to menu.lst.....I'm off to test.
Yep that works...although that page mentions a custom version I tested with catdudes ...by the way 'esc' returns to the non graphical version if editing is needed.
If any of this is repeated info then I blame the long thread
It's all very tarty...

Hello Roger
it sounds like you need to edit your menu.lst
to something like below:
Just change timeout and default to your own preference.
Other than that, i can't really say what is wrong.
as to whether you need to put hda or sda.
If you boot up using a Puppy LiveCD and look at either the drive icons on the desktop,
or open Pmount, whatever the drives are described as is what you should use in your menu.lst (for that particular Puppy)
Could you please Copy & Paste
the contents of your menu.lst
P.S
Apologies for the delay in replying,
but the forum is taking such a long time to load it is barely usable.

If i understand you correctly,Roger Hunter wrote: .......but puppy boots without the gfxmenu in menu.lst.....
it sounds like you need to edit your menu.lst
to something like below:
Code: Select all
# Start GRUB global section
timeout 15
default 3
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
gfxmenu /boot/grub/pupsta1
# End GRUB global section
Other than that, i can't really say what is wrong.
Yeah, it depends what Puppy version (kernel) you are trying to bootRoger Hunter wrote: OK, nearly got it.
Everything boots now. Puppy is very sensitive about hda vs sda.
But no graphics menu. I get a "file not found" error even though pupsta1 IS in boot/grub.

CatDude;
AT LAST!
It works like a charm and as I thought, the problem was my fault.
After reinstalling grub, instead of editing the menu.lst files as you said, I was deleting the new menu.lst and renaming the previous version, then editing in the line or two at the top.
Clearly, this was wrong. But why?
What's so special about the new menu.lst file?

Hi
Once again, apologies for the delay in responding,
but as i said on wednesday, the forum has been playing up (very slow loading pages)
in fact most times it never completely finished loading the page .
@ mikeb
@ Roger
Have you tried booting partitions of various formats and inode sizes ?
i just suggest to leave the top 6 or so lines as they are (in the new menu.lst)
as they give the date the menu.lst was generated, and tell you how to restore the MBR if necessary.

tarty = lush boot menus....and I like the 'young' bitWhatever do you mean young sir.
And with the simplicity of grub4dos one is free to focus on making kool menus ....good timing as I need to impress the local world soon so starting with an 'oooo' is a good move
regards
mike
ps---thanks for the simple instructions included in there.
pps--- that link I gave said the timeout and defauilt do not work but they do...must have been an early version.
Hello mike
as to the 'oooo' being a good move, i have to agree with you,
if i had to choose from the images below (just a few examples), my choice most certainly would not be boring.png

That's OK then .mikeb wrote: tarty = lush boot menus....

Hello mike
I have been toying with the idea of starting a new thread in the Eye Candy section,
just for GRUB message files, what do you think ?
Your slash.png screenshot looks very nice.

Cool, i did say:mikeb wrote: Customised and implemented...that was easy
and you have proved that to be the case, thankyou.CatDude wrote: So if you fancy creating your own message file, (which isn't as difficult as you may think.)

I like the yosemite one.
Certainly it compliments the use of a splash image during the system boot up...indeed using the same image for both would give a seamless booty experience

And why not ...especially as this thread is for the techinical site rather than the arty tarty stuff.I have been toying with the idea of starting a new thread in the Eye Candy section,

Hi

I have attached it below for you.mikeb wrote:I like the yosemite one.
I will give it some serious thought, would you contribute to it yourself ?mikeb wrote: And why not ...especially as this thread is for the techinical site rather than the arty tarty stuff.
There isn't many Puppies that have a splash image though, is there ?mikeb wrote: Certainly it compliments the use of a splash image during the system boot up...indeed using the same image for both would give a seamless booty experience

Thanks for the download
Bootsplash actually can attach a boot image and info to a pre made initrd.gz....also needs the kernel patched to use it...hmm
http://bootsplash.org/FAQ
As for a thread.... images plus premade files using a generic puppy template (as you made for me)...easy enough for people to contribute .
I'm sure I could come up with some more piccies

mike
hmm...that had a brief period of pupularity....I think playing with the initrd.gz put people off. There isn't many Puppies that have a splash image though, is there ?
