Would a diagnostic/rescue type of Puppy be a good thing?

#1 Post by nooby »

I came to think of this inspired by a new release I red about this one on DW.

"SystemRescueCd 1.5.5 comes with new installers for Linux and Windows that make it easy to install SystemRescueCd on a removable device.

In other words it will be possible to just download the ISO image and run the installer.

By installer they mean install to the moveable device. CD/DVD/USB if I get it.

Using that one to "rescue" the computer.

What kind of diagnostics does such a rescue cd have? Could puppy have added programs that do the same thing.

The second thing that inspired me was the experience of several of us not being able to easily help a guy with a Toshiba Laptop that fail to reboot even the CD with puppy on it.

Which log would have any logged info that could help with diagnostic on what goes wrong?

If we had some kind of diagnostic/rescue iso of puppy then every time somebody have an error that none of us are able to figure out then just run that iso and it should give enough error messages to be of great help?

Am I too naive?

There is already attackpup for security diagnostics.

For rescue, a barebone puppy is generally suitable - no need to install it.

Thanks for the link.

I guess such a puppy take care of reporting trojans and exploits but not why a puppy fail to reboot?

I think more of a diagnostic on the set up that makes things go wrong.

Recent example.

Quirky works well using Wine and Spotify while on Lupu5.00 when using Wine and Spotify it crash the lupu into some loop with black screen and no way to get it back to normal.

I hope somebody get inspired to make a puppy that record everything that is unusual with the set up of hardware and software combined and give a kind of log report that is readable for newbies so they know how to change the menu.lst with cheat code or to change to another puppy that handles the hardware better.

Rudypup (based on Puppy 2.14) had a lot of security and other techie utilities on it. Maybe it just needs updating?

St Bernard Pup??

It hasn't had any life since 2008.....but who knows?

Many people seem more interested in pretty than function

In answer to the title,

yes! - but not just rescuing infected/dead windows PCs

There are disasters happening everywhere, and Puppy/LiveCD rescue, with mesh networking/3G/satellite connection would be extremely useful to many people as a lifesaving comms aid

Aitch :)
