Toshiba 3110CT install

#92 Post by stevezsuzska »

Here are my experiences installing Puppy on an old Toshiba 3110CT laptop. Might be of use to someone else.

Spec PII 300 MHz, 192 MB RAM, external PCMCIA CDROM.

Boot from USB not possible as far as I know (someone will prove me wrong). Puppy 4.2 retro version Live CD. Start laptop, holding down C to boot from CD. Shortly after loading the Linux kernel the system appears to lose access to the CD drive and the boot aborts. Solution was to load a copy of the 4 files needed for booting onto a USB drive as well, together with the empty marker file. After the system loses access to the CD, it finds files on the USB drive. Can then run installer and install on HDD. Puppy Linux, when fully booted, can access the CD.

The same thing can probably be done with a wakepup2 floppy/USB combination.

It is probably possible to use PXE network booting. That's how I got XP onto the machine before I had a CD or floppy. Much more work though.

Runs very nicely. I even have Skype installed.

thinkpad x41, let's note r3, victor interlink

#93 Post by simo »

as described in the subject, three notebooks:

ibm thinkpad x41 (laptop, not tablet), switched to USB flash because the 1.8" HDD replacement costs more than a netbook.

let's note r3 - borked HD controller, puppy with flash revived the machine.

victor interlink pc - that was a netbook before the netbooks, just right for puppy.

Thought I'd chip in.

Currently using Browserpup, Ubuntu (just uninstalled Fedora), Windows 7 (for the odd game with the flatmates) and Vista (should delete tbh) on the main PC:

Intel e8400 3.00Ghz
GA-P35-DS3R
Supertalent 4x1gb ddr2-800
1 tb Samsung, 2x 500gb Seagate, 1x 200gb Seagate
Ati HD4870 512mb
22" Samsung 1680x1050

Click for larger pictures (The cables are usually tidier, just finished putting the HDDs back in!)
ImageImage

And on the laptop:
Ubuntu - Jaunty Jackalope

Dell E1505 (American version - even though I'm a Kiwi from down south!)
1.6ghz Dual Core T2010
Hynix 2x512mb ddr2-667
120gb Seagate
ATi Radeon x1400 Mobility
15" Phillips hi-res 1920x1200

ImageImage

DSL and Ubuntu (Jaunty) on the TV box:

Pentium 4 3.0ghz
Generic Intel board
Micron 2x512mb ddr-400
60gb Seagate laptop drive
FX 5700Ultra (AGP)
Gigabyte 54mbs g wireless card
21" CRT TV.

And finally Rockbox on the Toshiba Gigabeat (Not linux, but it is open source :) )

Compaq Armada e500 Notebook PC
  • Puppy 4.2 Full Install
    Intel Mobile Pentium II
    192 RAM
    Linksys WUSB54GC Wireless
Also on my kid's:
Dell Dimension 2400

I'm very happy with both installs. Xubuntu is also on the Dell, but doesn't get much use. Puppy works just fine for most applications.

Has anyone tried puppy 4.3.1 on an Intel Core Duo Quad Q9400?

It also comes with the ATI Radeon 1GB.

Will this work with puppy or are there compatibility problems?

Thanks

ok (deep breath):
IBM Thinkpad T20 - 128 Megs of Ram, 650 mhz PIII with a 10 gig HD (pretty much a glorified Netbook) and a Linksys 80211.b PCMCIA card.
Running Puppy 4.2.1 (Full Install) with the following extras:
-gtkpod
-Firefox (Bon Echo)
-qcomicbook (want to read my comic book scans on the go)
-aMSN (just because i use MSN more than anything else with chat and eBuddy was getting on my nerves)
and i find that i perfer JWM over IceWM.

HP Omnibook 4150

Got it for peanuts because its only removable drive was a gorked 1.44 meg floppy. Bought floppy and CD drives on e-bay.

Puppy linux 4.3.1

or

Lighthouse Pup something or other G

2.6.30.5 kernel

Mobile Pentium II, 363.88 Mhz.
256 meg RAM
D-Link Airplus G pcmcia wireless ethernet card that works most of the time.

This is the machine the wife and I haul along on RV trips
since the local paper is full of reports of laptops stolen out of pickup trucks. This one isn't worth all that much but works fine for e-mail when wireless internet is available.

Everything but the sound works. The Neomagic sound driver is blacklisted by the kernel so is disabled. I tried loading DSL with its old kernel and loading with that just stops at the sensing NM256 line.

Other machines:

1 Gig AMD CPU, 1.5 gig memory, home brewed from horse traded stuff.

Debian 5 'Lenny, bootable to Gnome or KDE.
This one is faster and more reliable than the XP box.

Dell XP Box, 4.6 Ghz AMD CPU, 2 gig memory.

Sometimes I run Puppy on either of the last two just for fun.

Hi Again All,
Ive been messing around with a old lappy and have done a full install of Scorpion puppy.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 81d46fcbcb
(i chose this pup as it has a neat lil script for restarting the alsa driver as well as it uses iceWM which i prefer over JWM)

Its a old Tosh satellite 2535 cds

Mobile pent mmx @.300 mhz
96 megs (32 onboard) found a 64 meg stick in a local pc shop
60 gig hd from a parts lappy i had(still puzzled how the 10 yr old bios sees this drive)but who am i to complain
floppy/cd drive/ 1-usb 1.1/
Pcmcia wired card(had to set to 16 bit in bios)(wish i could find a wifi card to test but $$ tight atm)
--------------------------
using dillo 2.1 as main (fast as heck)and firedog as secondary
using for mail/music/browsing
------------------------------------------------
great lil older lappy im on it now, And since my main 2 rigs have over 650 watt p.supplys this will be a great way to save money as well as better for the environment

Dell Latitude D420 ultraportable laptop.

I run Puppy 4.3.1 on the dual core (1.2MHz) 12.1" ultralaptop. I boot from a 2GB USB flash stick. Turned this slow side Windows XPPro SP3 ultralaptop into a fast system. Dell uses a slow 4300RPM 1.8" HDD to get a real PC into small, thin, & light footprint. It slows the entire system down. Puupy lets me work around the HDD & working from a small amount of my 2GB RAM, Puppy lowers the operating tempature. Works very well on the D420

Also use Puppy on my IBM Thinkpad T-23, which already ran faster and cooler than the D420 but Puppy gives me significantly faster operating speed.

Jealous! I've been making do with Grado SR-60's straight out of the jack on my laptop. Still, using Aqualung with the DSP set at medium sinc I get decent sounds.

Nothing shabby about those grados; They've always been "Headroom

Have been using Puppy for quite a while now, have used loads of linux over the last 10 years, but Puppy kidnapped me and i'm too comfy to go back to bloated distro's, thought i'd best finally join the forums.

As to systems ~

Main linux box - Puppy 4.2.1 - Athlon XP 2800+, 1GB RAM, 64MB GeForce2 MX400 AGP, Soundlbaster Live (CT4620), 120GB Western Digital HDD.

Other boxes (i have quite a few but will only list the ones relevant to linux use) -
Puppy 4.2.0 SMP/Macpup Foxy 3.0/Win7 - Dell Optiplex 745 SFF - E6400 Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, onboard video, Soundblaster Live External (USB).
Puppy 4.2.1 - Dell Latitude P4 2GHz (laptop), 512MB RAM, GeForce2 MX series video.
Puppy 4.2.1 - Toshiba Tecra 8100 P3 600MHz (laptop), 256MB RAM.

Once in a while i run Puppy (4.2.0 SMP) via USB stick on my main Windows machine, Q6600, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD4650, onboard sound, but not often as Puppy runs so well on all the above machines.
Main Puppy (home) ~ 4.2.1 2.6.25.16, Athlon XP 2800+
Main Puppy (work) ~ 4.3.1 SMP 2.6.30.5, E2180 C2D - Both have dual monitors (Xinerama).
Other ~ 4.2.0 SMP 2.6.29.1 /Macpup Foxy 3.0/Win7 - E6400 C2D. 4.2.1 2.6.25.16 - P4 2GHz laptop.

use menu / system / system status and config / hardware info
(in Lucid) to work out what you have

This is me:
Processor 2x AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
Memory 2074MB (159MB used)
I run Puppy from DVD (now) and have Ubuntu clone SuperOS
on the hard disk

Also have Eeepc 700 for running Puppeee
and a Dell Inspiron 3500 (pentium 4) laptop running Puppy 5 (Lucid)

With these meager resources I will conquer time and space
or go crazy (Oh I dun that)
