After downloading the new HPIJS pet, everything works great printing to a shared printer through CUPS, except after each printing I get the message:

"Can not get the ticket cache for root"

This shows up in the CUPS printer screen on localhost:631.

I can get the printer back by using the cups system to stop and restart the printer. Puppy Google comes up with no hits at all. Any ideas on what is happening here? I'm using Puppy 4.0 and I've got CUPS set up using rcrsn51s directions found here

I'll give this just one bump to see if anyone wants to comment. If not, I'll let it die.

My printer is perfectly usable, I just have to stop and start it in CUPS after each job. I think it has something to do with the way CUPS handles Windows user accounts but I haven't figured out how to fix it yet.

hpijs-2.8.7.pet

#18 Post by ZAPPDOG »

Howdy
I got the hpijs-2.8.7.pet to work just fine for my HP pcs 1210 all-in-one with dingo 4. It sure installs nicer and faster than in xp.
I haven't tried scanning with it yet but printer works quite nice,
I saw a mention somewhere that the pet doesn't work in Dingo that was dated back a bit. Its working now!

I also have "Can not get the ticket cache for root" problem

#24 Post by peebee »

I am printing over a Wifi connection from Puppy 4.1 to a HP Deskjet 3920 connected to Windows XP Home SP3 using the generic postscript method described in http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/how-tos/ ... ronwindows

AbiWord prints fine but Geany gives the "Can not get the ticket cache for root" error described by Hillside and the log on XP when remote printing a simple file called xxx reports what looks like a postscript formatting error??:
Error: /undefined in xxx

Mark, thanks for the link - saved my bacon with this new install.

Wolfpup, when I try to view your repository, I get a popup demanding user name and password for puppylinux.asia. What happened, did Del Rio get annexed by Viet Nam?

Is this OK under 4.2-Final?

Will this be made available for WOOF?

EDIT: Went ahead nd tried it - appears to load OK in 4.2-Final ... but CUPS still is unable to handle my HP OJ-4200 ... sadly, the MS XP version of windows handles the HP printer fine.

Go to the folder /usr/lib/cups/filter
Locate the file foomatic-rip-hplip and open it in a text editor
Change the top line to #!/usr/bin/perl -U
Save it and try to print again.

HP Deskjet F380 failed

#33 Post by Toppy »

Hello,

Wondered if anyone could help. I'm a newbie to puppy and am using Boxpup 4.1.3 which I like a lot. Unfortunately, CUPS printing doesn't seem to work.

Puppy is Boxpup 413
Installed PET package hpijs-2.8.12.pet
Printer is an HP DeskJet F380 all-in-one printer. It's connected via USB.

Symptoms: error message when trying to print via CUPS. Nothing appears on the printer.

In the CUPS browser I get this error:
HP_F380_USB_1 "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hplip failed"

Printer details are shown here as:
Description: HP Deskjet F300 series
Location: Local Printer
Printer Driver: HP Deskjet f300 Series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.12.26
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://HP/Deskjet%20F300%20series?serial=CN66UGK1KD04KH

Then I changed /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hplip to switch debug on.
This creates a logfile in /tmp/foomtic-rip.log
I think that this is the error:
renderer command: gs -q -dBATCH -dPARANOIDSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=595 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=842 -sDeviceManufacturer="HEWLETT-PACKARD" -sDeviceModel="deskjet 3600" -r300 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=1 -dIjsUseOutputFD -sOutputFile=- -

renderer return value: 9
renderer received signal: 9

I didn't want to post the entire log file as it's big, but can do it if required.
Anyone have any ideas on what I should do next?

@rcrsn51,

thanks for the help. I changed the file and restarted cups - still get the error.
I then rebooted and tried again - same error.

The log file has this - wondered if the 'inappropriate ioctl' bit had any bearing on it. Sorry, managed to miss that line in my earlier post:
