The Trendnet TEW-424UB (3.0R) is an inexpensive (USD 20) USB wireless adapter. It works with Puppy 3.01 using the ndiswrapper as follows:

(1) The install CD for my version included the driver inside the Windows setup.exe. I did not find a way to extract the driver from the setup.exe file within Linux so I installed the setup.exe on Windows XP and retrieved the files net8187b.inf and RTL8187B.sys.

(2) Copy those files to Puppy.

(3) Here are the command line steps to get connected to an unsecured network.

LOAD DRIVER AND MODULE:
# ndiswrapper -i net8187b.inf
# modprobe ndiswrapper

FIND INTERFACE AND ACCESS POINT:
# iwconfig
# iwlist wlan0 scan (find essid)

STANDARD CONNECTION:
# iwconfig wlan0 essid <found essid>
# dhcpcd -d wlan0

I also use the TEW 424 dongle. I found it easier for me to use the Puppy Setup Wizard to install. If you use MUT to mount your CD it is simple to access the drivers foldrer. I have tried both the XP and the ME driver versions and both work very well. The process is easy to follow even for a clutz like me.
1. Open Setup Folder
2. Open network Wizard
3. Click the Load Module button
4. Open Use Windows Driver. This will bring up ndiswrapper.put CD in drive and open using Mount in Pmount.
5. Using Pmount find required driver.
6, Drag Driver into ndiswrapper.
7. You may now close Pmount.
8. Click OK in ndiswrapper.
9. When next screen comes up select new interface (mine is WLAN)
10. Next click wireless.
11. Next click Scan.
12. You should now have a list of asvailable connections. Select yours and click Use This Profile.
13 Click yes or no for saving for next session.
14. You should now be in the puppy browser have a nice day..........

I have no knowledge of command line, but can usually figuare things out using Wizards. love my Puppy

Can you post the version number of Puppy you are using and the version number of your TEW-424UB. You can find the TEW version number on both the hardware and the CD. My TEW-424UB is version 3.0. With this version the drivers are not included on the CD except within the setup.exe.

I am using pup3.0.1 and airlink 101 wireless adapter with the same chipset as the trendnet tew 424, rtl8187b. I have used these drivers with no problems in Ubuntu and Xubuntu, but when I try to install the drivers in ndiswrapper with puppy I receive the message 8187b driver loaded, but then the next message states ndiswrapper failed.

Does someone know how to configure this adapter to ndiswrapper from the console. I have never been able to get the adapter to work with this network manager as stated in the posts above.

Edit to last post. I see I should have read the first post by brucehohl as it seems to be the console commands. My problem starts when trying to move the rtl8187b.inf file to ndiswrapper. An error message appears after trying to move.

When I use the "ndiswrapper -i net8187b.inf" command it says driver 8187b installed but states it is an invalid driver. Can someone tell me how to remove the previous ndiswrapper and driver so I can start over and try again from the first steps.

There are several different wifi chipsets under discussion here:
- Zydas ZD1211B (TEW-424UB v1.0)
- SiS 163 (TEW-424UB v2.0)
- Realtek RTL8187 (TEW-424UB v3.0)

The SiS 163 version definitely requires ndiswrapper, but there are native Linux drivers for the other 2, which should be tried first before resorting to ndiswrapper.

For the Zydas ZD1211B version, the zd1211rw driver included with Puppy may not be compatible, but there's an alternative Zydas driver for Puppy3x here -

Hello

I too, have this wireless dongle. I tried copying both the .inf and .sys to my flashdrive when I try to do load the drivers by typing in

# ndiswrapper -i net8187b.inf
# modprobe ndiswrapper

it says driver is already loaded, and it doesn't detect my usb dongle when I do

iwconfig

I tried doing the second method using the wizard, and still no go.

any ideas? maybe I have to unload the ndis drivers, and re-do it again, but how?

also

I've also tried the suggested driver package from the thread above, and again, i still don't get any devices to show up using iwconfig.

I tried following the readme to do a series of modprobes, but it just says, XXX driver not found.

im in the same boat as the person directly above me as far as ndiswrapper goes.

same usb adapter as the first poster.

I just bought the Trendnet TEW-424UB H/W v3 and it works fine with Puppy Lucid 5.2.8. I tried it with AV Linux 5.0 which is a Debian based distro and with Ultimate Edition 2.7 which is a Ubuntu based distro. The usb device works with out any problems in setting up . Just plug in and go.
