He wants to know immediately if he should upload the 3.02Alpha Unleashed tarball with a view to the Community completing it to 3.02 Final

I take it the answer is yes.

Please try this latest Alpha and comminucate this to Barry if you think it's worth doing. He only has 2 days broadband access, so please evaluate it right now.

Note that kirk's brilliant network file-sharing curlftpd-thingy won't work in the 3.02alpha1. It needs a couple of small fixes as described here:

There are some applications in Dingo that you would definitely want in Puppy3, such as Osmo instead of that ical Tcl/Tk calendar/diary application. You can get the PET packages out of the puppy-packages-4 repository at ibiblio.org, but in some cases they may need to be recompiled.

All applications written in C++ need to be recompiled. Puppy3 has an older libstdc++.so.6 library that does not work with C++ apps compiled in Puppy4.

Apps written in C will most likely work, even GTK applications, even though Puppy4 has later libc and GTK libraries. The main issue is if an application uses a feature that is in the 2.12.x GTK libraries and not in the 2.10.x libraries.

But anyway, it's usually a pretty simple matter to recompile a package. You can just subtitute the PET package from Puppy4 with the recompiled executables.

As I simply replaced the entire '0-rootfs-3.01' PET package (the core package in Unleashed) with '0-rootfs-4.00' from Dingo, all scripts got replaced. In some cases, such as the package management (run from the 'install' icon on the desktop), you might want to bring back the older dialog window that supports dotpups, as Dingo has taken a more radical position of officially supporting PET packages only.

The Unleashed tarball, 'puppy-unleashed-3.02alpha1.tar.gz' has been uploaded. It's about 500MB, expands to about 1.5GB, so a Linux partititon with about 2GB free space is needed. It expands to a directory 'puppy-unleashed'.

Just downloaded it to a frugal install.

Very very nice. First impressions indicate that it's stable already, but will put it through its paces later today.

The same Gxine problems reported as for 3.01, as nothing has changed there. Maybe try Xine-ui instead, as in Dingo. Again, you can just grab the PET package but you would probably need to recompile the xine-ui source and get a new executable -- or just get it out of the Slackware binary package.
The problem is, Xine-ui has its own set of problems. It also has a full-screen problem, the JWM taskbar remains visible.

First Impressions:

First of all the default Black vg theme is an excellent choice. With its bright yellow menu and time (time was wrong on my set up - while since that happened). I also feel the bright citrus theme will be popular with younger users. Having a blank background allows people to tweak if they wish (and many do as they get to grips with Puppy)

For some reason this 3.01 kernel (which I first noticed in 3.00) does certain things faster. Game play of bubbles is faster. This is not just having a pristine system it is the code running faster or displaying faster . . .

Want a program to start automatically open rox and drag its icon into Startup - another backport from Dingo

I did a remaster ISO and it was much speedier (there is a point which it says wait and wait . . .) I was just going to make a cup of tea as this process takes about 20 mins and it was done in aprox 2-4mins
The files in Startup had gone from the remaster, which was a shame as that was the point of my remaster . . .

The judicious use of the Netsurf browser for help and offline pages may encourage others with slow machines to use this fast browser for their browsing.

I am not sure if it is 99MB (stated) or 103MB (reported)
but it is big by Puppy and Dingo standards
(Barry sets a standard bloatware can not match)

I tried the 3.02 alpha on my Averatec 3225 HS.

Puppy 2.00 through Puppy 3.01 have worked on this laptop except that 3.01 did not recognize the realtek wifi card out of the box.

I was happy with 3.02 in the sense, it recognized the wifi card and configured it easily out of the box. As a livecd, basic stuff that I usually use like browsing, etc worked.

1 - But when I tried to save my settings, it started creating a sfs file on an ntfs partition, and it kept doing it even after 3 hours (i left the pc on while I went to a friends). I did a control-c and exited out of this process. The sfs file was not created completely and this file could not be used.

2 - When I was playing a video (streaming) in gxine and tried Control-F for fullscreen, xorg crashed and I had to xwin again. But as somebody in this forum mentioned, if I first go to maximized window and then fullscreen, it works.

I dont know if these are bugs with this version or some incompatibility with my laptop.

If you found that the 3.01Retro that uses kernel version 2.6.18.1 resolved issues relating to kernel problems, this may be of help.


On my hardware it proved extremely useful.

I download the retro and tried using that.

It solved the problem with the pup_save.sfs file as this time the file got created (i reduced the file size to 256MB).

I am running Puppy 3.02 Alpha Retro on frugal now.

But the gxine fullscreen problem is still there.

The full screen mode (ctrl-f) for Gxine does work if the Gxine window is maximized first. If the Gxine window is not full size before hitting ctrl-f it just flashes and remains the same size.

But it takes a great stretch of imagination to say gxine works

Imagine if MS offered a 'feature' that only 'worked' if you pressed a mysterious combination before using a feature. Well OK they do that - for example clicking "Start" to shutdown but you know what I mean . . .

Well, this is a community edition, so we're not stuck with gxine if we don't want to be. I've found mplayer works great on my 3.01 install, so I don't see why it wouldn't work just as well on the 3.02Alpha1. Just a thought.

What exactly is the attraction of gxine? Is it smaller? Theoretically better? This has come up again and again, people have problems with gxine, they use mplayer and are happy . . .

Oh yes, it's a problem. Just saying it can be worked around. Xine-ui in dingo seems nice. As far as why Xine over Mplayer, it's Xine's DVD features.

Just an update from me. Other than the bugs I reported earlier, there are some great things I noticed in this puppy.

1 - Fastest boot time. This puppy boots up the fastest on my Averatec 3200 series laptop. I had an option to disable serial detect when creating the pup_save file. Also, the DHCP to get the IP while booting seems to be a flash. I must admit that I did not try 3.01 because the network on my laptop was not supported out of the box.

2 - Power off. This is the only puppy that powers off my laptop after shutdown.
